I am looking for my new Quarter horse Brave a Dee ring snaffle for ring work. Wow I just measured him tonight he is going to need a 6 inch ? Does that sound right for a quarter horse ? Prize was APHA and he wore a 4 3/4 and a cob bridle. Oops I put this in the wrong place.

That doesn't sound right. Solon is just over a 6".

Dante (appendix QH) wore a 5"....I agree w/ Cheval- that sounds a bit (lol, sorry. :p) bit for a QH.

I agree it doesn't. I know he has big jaws. I needed to remove the throat latch on my western horse size bridle because it was to tight. I just can't wait I am headed back out to the barn to remeasure and measure the bit I have been using even though he doesn't like that bit to well. Maybe its to small is why. Wish me luck in my measuring again :)

I placed a string in his mouth and marked on the outside next to his lips with a marker and measured the inside of those marks then added 1/4 inch.. He could use a 5 3/4 with that measurement but it would be snug so I went with 6 inch. I will run up and remeasure. :)

Try a cut rubber hose. That's what we used. Works better than a string because it's got similar consistency. Good luck!!

Try a cut rubber hose.

That's a creative idea I'll have to remember that! I've never needed anything other than a 5" for a QH though.

Ok I am back :) I had help this time. He needs a 5 1/2. Thanks guys I thought 6 sounded large. Which 5 1/2 does to but better then 6. No wonder he doesn't really like the bit I am using now. I stopped using it and was riding in halter and lead rope.

I will have to remember the hose trick for next time around. That does sound like a great way. Thanks for the idea.
