The young filly needed to be freed from the tree after curiosity got the better of it and it wedged its head between separate sections of the trunk.

The horse, called Gracie, was unable to free itself and could have been in danger were it not for a passer-by who was able to come to the rescue after he heard the horse whinnying .

Jason Harschbarger, a neighbour in the town of Pullman, West Virginia, USA, arrived at the scene which resembled the image of Winnie the Pooh getting stuck in the honey tree.

Mr Harschbarger collected his tools and was able to carefully set the horse free by using a chainsaw to slowly cut the wood around its neck.

However, before he did so, he was able to take a few photographs.

Fortunately for Gracie, she was able to escape her ordeal with only a few minor injuries and, according to Mr Harschbarger, is on the road to recovery.

Following his rescue operation, Mr Harschbarger told a local television station: "She has a few cuts on her face and ear.

"Last I heard her jaw was a little dislocated but I think it is healing up and she can eat on her own again."

It remains unclear why Gracie put her head into the gap.

Because some horses can find a way to get hurt in a padded room. :p

The poor thing looks so pitiful stuck in the tree. Scary situation I'm sure.

I'm glad somebody posted this... I saw this yesterday, but didn't have time to gut it here! Thank goodness there was a kind soul that stopped to help this horse.

That looks like it was very uncomfortable. Glad she is OK. She looks so pitiful sitting there while someone is taking a picture.

On a lighter side it reminds me of the comedian when watching the video of the "starving child" in a third world country, "Can't the camera man give him a sandwich?"

Oh no! Poor baby.. I'm surprised the chain saw didn't cause her to hurt herself even more!

Thought the same thing .... I am wondering if the whole story wasn't told , and some tranq. was given before the extraction..

She'd probably been sitting there for awhile and was too exhausted to fight, poor thing! I know we can chainsaw trees right outside the horse pens and after a few minutes they just ignore us... I'd be terrified to try and chainsaw a HORSE out, though!

And she hasn't even actually met Legacy!

I saw that on the news other day, and my father immediately asked if I thought she was related to Leggy. :D

OMG, the poor horse! Those pictures look scary. How could they ever use a chain saw without scaring her to death from the sound next to her head:eek: My Cloud would have a heart attack right there on the spot. I am glad she is OK.

Sounds like something my horse would do! I'm glad she's all right.

Many, many (many) years ago when I was a kid, one of our cats got his head stuck through a knothole under the house. My dad had to cut a hole in the living room floor to get him out.
