07-07-2009, 03:30 PM
That would be really cool! I don't know if I'd be able to do it though :( and I'd be horseless.....

PoniesRock101
07-07-2009, 03:31 PM
you could make it at starved rock :) I'm pretty sure they have trails, but thats Northern IL. A far trek for you prissy!

Fjords <3
07-07-2009, 03:35 PM
Aw that would be so fun! Unfortunately, I seriously doubt my parents would let me, and I'm also horseless :) but everyone else have fun!!

prissy18
07-07-2009, 03:40 PM

PoniesRock101
07-07-2009, 03:40 PM

MontysGirl
07-07-2009, 04:19 PM
I might be able to do:)My freind and i were talking about going horse camping down there sometime but im not sure if we still are or not. Could we do it in northern illinois?

prissy18
07-07-2009, 09:23 PM
Possibly. I am in central and could prolly find a way up

doc_western
07-11-2009, 01:49 PM
That'd be aweseome! I know I'd be interested....dunno if my parents would approve, but I imagine I'd be able to convice them. I'd be horseless, too, but I think we're an interesting enough bunch that we'd find something to do, right? :p I'm not sure about location, but I'm putting in a vote for somewhere in nortern Illinois... I'll look on the interwebs for parks & things....Not too familier w/ parks outside of WI. :)

Well Im in Southern MO, so Im out.

I'd love to meet up! I have a hard time getting full weekends off though, so come up with some dates soon and I can get it into my boss. Of course if we planned a Friday night thru Sunday camping thing I'd just leave Sat night :-)

I'm near St Louis. I've heard Litchfield IL has a nice place to ride/camp but I've never been there. I think I'd be ok with 3 hrs or less travel, maybe more if the place is going to be super cool :-D

Oh yeah, and I've got two horses... if hubby wants to stay at camp (perhaps with other non riders/husbands) then someone could ride his horse out on a trail. OR if we put this off far enough... I might have a 3 horse trailer and a healthy Percheron ready for some light trail riding.

Peggy Sue

Depends on when and where :)

prissy18
07-11-2009, 08:56 PM
Ok guys. So dates I will come up with soon. Ponies and other upper Illinois people can you think of good places. I might be able to bring Misty and mabey Sweetie if any one wants a project to ride lol.
Give me places please guys thanks.

PoniesRock101

I'll look around, but I doubt I'll be able to go :(

doc_western
07-12-2009, 11:16 AM
I'll look around, but I doubt I'll be able to go :(

No! You must go! lol. I like Gem's Mom's (that's confuzzling, haha) idea of doing a Fri-Sun thing, y'know? I'm going to go look at places now..... I think once we get a date set, we'll be able to figure out who's coming, and we can work out the details, such as who's brining what horses & w/e. :)

Gem's Mom
07-12-2009, 11:34 AM
doc, also if we do Fri-Sun there's more chances people can come out, if only for part of the time :-)

Here's the run down of Illinois department of natural resources equestrian sites:

http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/Programs/Camping/equestrian_camptrails.htm

I'd say map out the ones with equestrian camping and lots of trails then pick a few centrally located for us to choose from :-)

eta: I'm making a map right now of the ones that have camping

Gem's Mom
07-12-2009, 12:33 PM
ok, here's the link to the map of DNR equestrian camping:
(tell me if this link doesn't work)
Illinois Horse Camping Trails (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?vps=4&jsv=166d&ie=UTF8&hl=en&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=114601396696439842916.00046e8683aa05941b64c)

I think these are the most centrally located places, as in the middle of the map as I'm looking at it:
Argyle Lake (http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R1/ARGYLE.HTM)
Weinberg-King (http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R4/WEINBERG.HTM)
Siloam Springs (http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R4/SILOAMSP.htm)
Sand Ridge (http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R4/sand.htm)
Jim Edgar (http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R4/jepc.htm)

My pick:
Close call. All of them have separate equestrian camping with what looks like water and electric available. Doesn't say anything about horse accommodations, I'd plan on a high line or something of that sort. They range from 7 miles to 30 miles of trails. I'm not ruling out the shorter trails since if we share horses it might be handy to do little loops to keep switching out riders. Anywho, I pick Jim Edgar since it's the closest of the 5 to me :-) It's still at least 2 hrs from me (St Louis-ish). I think I'm willing to travel 3-4 hrs tops.

What do you guys think??

vicklynn
07-12-2009, 12:47 PM
I think you need to make it close enough for ME to come...and hoping that City is ready by that time.

GrungeEquestrian
07-12-2009, 02:14 PM
Wow I would love to. And I could actually trailer Trouble to Starve Rock, that is about 30 minutes away from me. BUT unfortunately the same weekend of the State Fair is my 4-h county fair...which I have to present my projects in :(. Very disappointing.

PatriotsDreamer
07-12-2009, 02:18 PM
if its close enough to me( st louisish).. dreamer and i will come!

doc_western
07-12-2009, 05:16 PM
hrm.... they're all a bit more west than I may be able to go.... I'll check the travel times on google maps...

doc_western
07-12-2009, 05:30 PM
What do you guys think of these places? They're a closer to me (the others were a good 4 1/2- 6 1/2 hrs away), but I'm not sure exactaly where ya'll are. :)

Matthiessen State Park (http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R1/mttindex.htm)
(http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R1/mttindex.htm)Hennepin Canal State Trail (http://www.dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/PARKS/R1/HENNPIN.HTM)

PoniesRock101
07-12-2009, 06:14 PM
Well, the second one is 2 hours and 13 min from me. It's pretty much directly west from me! :p lol its past arlington.
the first one is about an hour and 12 min west of me!
The last one is an hour and 45 min aaway. I'm not sure if I'll go to any...
I'll look at the other ones that gems mom offered.

prissy18
07-12-2009, 06:41 PM
Ok We have people wanting to come up from the south so we may have a place a lil more down south. I am in springfield. We have a horse camping site in rochester. I know Site M is good. And Sandrige I think might be fun to. Not sure were they are though

vicklynn
07-12-2009, 07:23 PM
Hey, if its any time soon, dont count on me. Id like to come but City hasnt had the trainer on him yet.
If there are changes and you are in the locations you are now suggesting, the more southern ones. I see a 6+ hr drive, which I can do, IF someone has a place for us over night.

That is IF City gets riden, and IF the location is right.

If not, you all have a GREAT time, and I would expect pics ya know...LOL

Ill keep checking back.

prissy18
07-12-2009, 07:41 PM
Vick. I am sure if City isnt ready you can use someone elseshorse. I might be able to bring Misty if we get this together. Because Abby isnt to much of a trail horse lol.

Gem's Mom
07-13-2009, 04:03 AM
Maybe it would help if we knew where everyone was coming from, then pick something central to the people. My choices before were just central to the state. So go ahead and let me know what city you're hailing from and I'll plot those on the map (can't figure out how to let people just do it themselves) and then we'll see where we're at. Sound good?

vicklynn
07-13-2009, 06:52 AM
Ya, put up a few choices for everyone to choose from.

I dont think 6 hrs is a bad drive for people to meet up, closer is always nicer, but its only going to be for a few that way. So, If your serious about meeting up, dont let 6 hrs stop you. Now, I will let 7 hrs stop me, cause I plan on 2 hrs over my 6 hr drive. I stop alot...LOL

Peggy Sue
07-13-2009, 08:56 AM
I am in Dennison, IL which is close to Paris.. I am as far EAST as you can go in the central part of the state

doc_western
07-13-2009, 09:26 AM
I'm in Germantown, WI. :p I'll talk to my parents (I have my temps, but w/ the restrictions I can't drive alone) & see if they'd be willing to go somewhere a bit further south.... Maybe even hook up w/ someone part way there? I dunno- I'll let ya'll know. :)

prissy18
07-13-2009, 03:14 PM
How far is rochester from everyone?

vicklynn
07-13-2009, 04:07 PM
I see 2 different counties. Which county are you talking about. Makes a bit of a difference.

Gem's Mom
07-13-2009, 04:24 PM

prissy18
07-13-2009, 06:36 PM
Rochester Illinois
62563 Is the zip code.

vicklynn
07-13-2009, 07:09 PM

prissy18
07-13-2009, 07:34 PM
Sweet Vick!
Sangchris is a few miles out from rochester.
How many people caN make it there?

Gem's Mom
07-14-2009, 06:35 AM
Does anyone live close enough to go check it out first? I know it's on that list of equestrian camping and trails but on their site there's just a small blub about a 5 mile trail and no mention of equestrian camping...

doc_western
07-14-2009, 11:06 AM
According to google maps..... that's 4 hrs 55min from here. :) Should be do-able... But yeah, is anyone near enough where they could run by & check it out before hand? That'd be a good idea....
Are we shooting for doing this in August?

Gem's Mom

I emailed for more info on equestrian trails and camping. This is what I got back:

We are mostly a day use area for equestrians. While we have camping, we only have 5 camping spots that have no electricity. Water is available, and tents can use the just off the parking lot, and trailers must remain in the parking lot. We have a few hitching posts in this area. We have basically two trails that can be co-joined. The west shoreline trail is a linear trail that will be approx. 12-15 miles along the west arm of the lake. Our other trail, Clear Creek north, is near the dam, and runs on both sides of the creek below the spillway. There is a low water crossing that allows users access to both sides of the trail. When the water is high, or flooded, both sides of the trail can not be co-joined. This trail, when access to both sides is available, is approx. 5-6 miles. We have some crude maps of portions of the trail at the office. Office hrs. are 8-4, Mon-Fri.

So no good spot to camp with horses.

I'm going to email Ramsey Lake, Wolf Creek and Jim Edgar for more info on theirs. Those are the 3 that look closest to Sangchris.

vicklynn
07-14-2009, 01:34 PM
Thanks for the update Gems Mom. Will be looking for more of them.

I see the Sangchris State Park is still within my driving range!!!

Gem's Mom
07-14-2009, 02:12 PM
vick- you're coming from Southern Mo right? If so, Ramsey and Wolf Creek will be a little closer for you.

eta: and heck, if this is the area that looks doable then I'm also emailing Lake Yeager for more info, that's by Litchfield, il.

vicklynn
07-14-2009, 03:45 PM
Gems Mom, actually its a bit further speed wise. I am in the SW corner and would come up through St Louis.
I try NOT to take the back roads. They are time consuming and can be dangerous.

dosnt matter, it is still just under 6 hrs.

Peggy Sue
07-14-2009, 04:07 PM
Wolf Creek is WONDERFUL riding ... and their camp ground is all shade!! they also have pit toilet ON THE TRAIL around the 1/2 way mark out and back...

I could possibly drive there one day to check on elec site(I don't think they have any) and take some pics of the campground and the fishing on lake shelbyville is suppose to be AMAZING as well

Peggy- thanks for the info on wolf creek! If you say it's good and everyone likes the location we could plan on that one. It's about 3 hrs from me which will work fine.

For Lake Yeager (Litchfield) it's no electric and I've heard the trails are tricky so maybe that one won't work either :-/

vicklynn
07-14-2009, 07:02 PM
Works for me. I just changed direction to get there and it adds 1 whole minute...LOL
Head due east until I get to I77. Im good with that.

there is a port a potty and you can shower at the regular camping site which also has electric, horse site does have running water too though.im pretty sure(as of last year) cost was $12 per night to camp at the equestrian park there. also there if any horse was to get hurt and someone needed an emergency place to go my boyfriends moms house is 15 minutes up the road or my barn is a 45min drive.

That is 6 to 6 1/2 hrs for me. I can make it work, Id leave EARLY, but thats fine.

My question is, who wants to go meet up period.
I think there needs to be a thread just asking who wants to go that CAN go.
We need dates time and place.
We need to vote on a location and date. Next month aint that far away...LOL

Gem's Mom
07-15-2009, 05:21 PM
Email back from Lake Yeager:
We have approximately 8 mile of trails. The camping area is primitive with a water faucet to share, porta-potties with no electric. Showers are available in another camping about 1/8 mile away. Cost is $12.00 per night. If you need anything else, e-mail back or call the Campground Manager @ 217-327-4771.

Email back from Wolf Creek:
217-459-2444 !! That's the telephone number you should call. Sorry we haven't answered earier. Ms. Bland at that number can answer your questions.
Thanks

But Vick, you said Wolf Creek is too far. Where exactly are you coming from? I'll email places within driving distance from you too (you said 6 hrs tops right?).

Good idea on starting another thread on WHO all wants to go, it'll help narrow down where to go!

I might also just pick a date and a place and say I'm going come if you want! lol

I'm trying to think of a date..... I know Vick said her house sitter is gone starting the 16? Would the weekend of the 8th work...?

Why don't we wait and go in Sept or Oct when it cools down?? I know camping there is cheaper then most places ... but it is central IL too...

It takes MONTHS to put one of these together right ...

we can TRY one in Aug school here starts back on the 18th of Aug which means cuts down on MY traveling time since I take to school and pick him up daily

It dosnt have to.
People say hey, this area, lets ride, figure out who can and cant go.
Set a place and date and if people can come cool, if not cool.
Everyone bring what you need, and everyone have a great time.

I think in most cases, yes, but since there's really not that many people coming, I don't think it will. I suppose it'll happen eventually, lol. After we figure out where & when, the rest really won't take long. :)

Trailrider, as much as I would love to jump on that. That is the weekend my house sitter leaves for FL.

I worked Myst up tonight just to get her ready for a trail ride. Man shes a sweet girl. City will have to sit out a few rides, need to restart him on his ground work, get his head right.

Im a big ??? now too. Ill wait and see where and when you all set it up, and then Ill decide.
Dosnt look like many want to go.

I am a big ??? depend on when , where and what is going on with my son as well...

You plan it and IF I can be there I will...

Im a big ??? as well. if its fairly close to me ill go, if its very far, ill have to pass as i am putting alot of $$ into these new rescues

I didn't mean you were going for sure! IT was kind of you have an idea you possibly will be able to go most likely. I know doc and I are kind of in the realm of unsure if we'll make it even if it was close to us. (it will be virtually almost impossible for us) I think I kinda should have just made it into one big list, instead of the 2. I'll stop making list late at night, when I had about 2 hours of sleep for the day before! sorry for the confusion!

That's waaayyy too south, lol. I think I can pretty much be counted out, like Ponies mentioned, it'd be really hard for either of us to make it. /= Hope the rest of you guys can work something out though! :)
