I am getting to old for this stuff! Kids are giving me more grey hairs!

Tonight was the kids gymkhana. All I had to do was help tack up their horse and watch them ride.

Well, both kids were doing great. Pulling in mostly 2nd places. woohoo!

Then on one of the patterns Nico was doing pretty good and Missy came up on the last barrel and all of a sudden she turned to the wrong side of the barrel. She went one way and Nico fell off the other side, hitting the barrel first then landing on the ground! I had a complete heart attack! Of course this was the only pattern I didn't video!

Missy stopped and just stood there looking at him, but when he got up she was like... "uh oh, I'm in trouble" and she started moving away. I was running into the arena, but Nico Cowboyed up, grabbed Missy, got back on, finished the pattern and the announcer told him that since he went off his horse, they would let him ride the pattern again.

So he rode the pattern again and got 2nd place!!! My stomach was still in knots as I turned and headed back towards our trailer, and hubby is just sitting there like nothing happened. I asked him "weren't you worried?" He said "Nope, he fell off in slow motion, he's fine." Ugh!!! If Nico had gotten hurt from riding the horse I would have never heard the end of it, because it would interfere with his regular sports. :nono:

Nico is fine, he says his side hurts a bit as that is what hit the barrel when he went off. But other than that he was just mad about the whole thing. I think because he got embarrassed, but the announcer really helped to ease his embarrassment, by telling him it was a GREAT fall and would win if it was on Funniest Home Videos.

Oh gosh, I'm sure if I'm ever a mom, I'd worry too!
I'm glad he's okay though! :)

ETA: I'm fairly sure it's a man thing (not worrying so much)... my Mom always seems worried more than my dad does... :P

I am ALWAYS worried when the kids ride.

I always feel so helpless that I can't control whatever happens..... like tonight. :) But I know that is the risk when you ride horses. Sometimes it being a mom scares the crap out of me.

I know where you're coming from.. don't worry!
Well ok, I know you can't not worry.. Its what mums do heh ;)
As JTM said, my mum will instantly worry more than my dad will when I fall off..

But I picked up on the bit that if he'd been seriously hurt, and about the regular sports.. Well now thats not fair is it. You may have introduced him to horses but if he was seriously hurt it is NOT your fault.. He should understand that =/
*hugs*
Its hard to let them go off and ride by themselves, in show arenas and stuff.. And stuff will go wrong..
ANYWAY
Congrats on the kids 2nds, thats BRILLIANT ;)

The kids are growing up and growing up means taking a few falls. I am glad he wasn't hurt and got right back on Missy. Really awesome he was able to get second place. I have a feeling your hair is only just starting to go grey with those kids!

Kristy,

It doesn't get any better even when they are adults. We're mom's and that's what we do is let them do things and worry like heck!!!

I'm glad Nico is okay and he cowboy'd up and placed second... WTG Nico!!!

Congratulations to Nico and Chy for all their ribbons they are doing great!!!

Once again, Alice said it way better than I could :P
Accidents happen, that's part of life.
And really, even though you may have introduced Nico to horses - it's his choice to ride, and therefore you could never be blamed for an accident..

And what more power over if an accident happens or not do you have than him? None. As much as we may wish we did, we don't... my mom always says that just watching anything potentially dangerous with me & horses gives her butterflies, but then that the beauty of it beats them out :)

Way to go, Nico! What a cowboy! I think I would be scared (and sore!) to get back on and RUN the pattern again!

Congratulations to Nico for handling it all so well and for cowboying up.:) Way to go, Nico. I'm glad he's ok and that he got right back on and finished the ride. And congratulations to both the kids for all of their ribbons- great job!:D

My mom used to always tell my brother and I when we were little that we were giving her grey hairs, lol. She doesn't say it much any more though. Of course she's never around when I ride (no one in my family ever is) so neither of my parents ever see the close calls, the near falls, the "stunts", the spooks, the bucks, the rears, the hitting of the ground, all that good stuff.:p So maybe she just doesn't know she should be worrying, lol.:innocent:

Give Nico a pat on the shoulder for Cowboying UP!!!

I know your worried mom, but he IS ok.

My son used to get on his 13.3 pony and he'd be in her sides(bareback)so she would buck him off.
I got used to it. You will too.
You will learn when to and when not to fret about it, no matter how hard, we, as moms, want to fret over every bump they get.

Even the best have bit the dirt a time or two. Glad he cowboy'ed up and back in the saddle he went to get a second place. Way to go NICO!!!

As a mother, I understand about keeping your kids safe. The only way we can do that is if we put them in a plastic bubble but they would never learn how to LIVE a real life. (and it would look too funny LOL!)

Way to go to both Nico & Chy for placing well!! That's awesome!

I understand what you mean about kids giving you gray hairs, my kids have been doing that to me too! I just cover it up with Dye and nobody is the wiser!! ;)

An old cowboy once told me (after one of my MANY fall off's) that for each time you fall off, you become a better rider, especially if you get back on!
I firmly believe that, there are lessons our horses will teach us, and sometimes that's how they do it!! lol

Way to go Nico for getting back on your horse and making her run the barrels again!! Be proud of yourself for being tough enough!! No need to be embarrassed! ;)

Glad Nico's okay. He'll be sore of course. :D And congrats for the great placings! I'm sure I've given my mom a few gray hairs from all those falls I've had, except she wasn't even there to witness my favorite one.

Thanks everyone. I was scared! I do know they will take more falls.

The funny part is, when Missy bucked with Chy, hubby almost had a melt down! And she didn't go off. But he said that if she had gone off, he would have shot that horse. hmmmm, do you think chy is his little girl??

I have tons of grey hairs and yes, it's time to go to the store and get my color fix. Especially after last night. Now that we have slept on it, the whole scene was kinda funny, of course because he wasn't hurt. ;)

Missy was cute, at first she looked.. "what are you doing down there?" then..... "uh oh, I'm in trouble" :hysterical: Darn I wish I had been recording that ride.

Ah mom... I'm sure he wouldn't have been thrilled if his mom had to come catch his horse for him!:o I think it's great that he hopped right back on - what a great lesson for him!

I am glad he's OK... I'm not a mom but I can imagine it would be scary.

LOL Kevin, I know, but I am mom and it's my right to worry. ;) Heck we have made a couple of ER visits with Nico from tackle football. ugh!!! I have to double up on the Ms. Clairol during football season and THAT is just around the corner.

LOL Sedona, you are right. I was half way across the arena when I saw him get up and was trying to get back on. So I stopped and watched him till he was up and then left the arena. :innocent: I let him rerun and waited till he came back to the trailer. Actually after his second run he took Missy to the warm up area and rode her around there. So I was proud of him in all aspects of his little wreck.

I have always told the kids that after they are done with their runs they need to go straight to the warm up area, so Missy doesn't get trailer sour. She will get pissy if they just run and come back to the trailer. So he did good all the way around. :)

Glad to hear all finished well. I hate to tell you this but most of my gray hair from kids came from the teenage years! As they grow their problems become fewer but more serious. Just know that it will bother you but you'll make it through and they will be become better adults from it too.

As one grandma used to say when someone took a spill, "just rub a little dirt on it and get back to work." lol

Way to go Nico! Glad he wasn't hurt and he get points for getting back up and running the barrels again getting 2nd place too. Being a mom I totally understand the grey hairs from worrying...I worry every time my son rides horses , his dirk bike, or his Harley..

I am sorry he fell off but the re-ride surprised me. Falling off is disqualification at our club.

LOL... Miracle Whip, it a fun show for the kids. Many of them are just learning and they give them ALL a chance to compete. If they fall off their horses, they are allowed to re-run.

Now if they blow the pattern, they do get disqualified. ;)

I just don't understand though because you keep talking about year end awards. If they give out saddles etc I don't think they should get re-rides. We don't have any clubs that are just kids. They had kid and youth divisions, but the show itself is open to all ages. Is this 4-H or something?

Country Girl 43
07-14-2009, 09:06 PM
No, it's not 4-H. It's a monthly gymkhana.

Yes, they ride for year end points. But if a kid comes off their horse during a pattern, they let the kid re-run. They don't win any money during the regular shows, but they do get ribbons and accumulate points for year end.

It's really not the kids fault if the horse bucks them off, or falls. They want the kids to have the opportunity re-ride if that happens. Plus, it helps to get the kids back on the horse ( if thet are not hurt)

Now our regular gymkana, we don't get to do re-runs. If we (adults) go off... oh well it's a "no time"
