Ok so as all of you know I love Dolly to death, but she is to small and fast for me..
(I want, and need a slow, lazy trail horse..) Now I am trying to work through these issues, but I can't make Dolly grown any more.(She is nine) And I'm not getting any smaller.. Ok so get this, This lady who lives in Monroe(I live in Monroe!) wants to buy Dolly for her daughter, They would be competing in mounted games and speed events. The little girl has been riding for six years and she wants a fast pony.. I think Dolly would love it so much, I think that would be perfect for Dolly and the little girl. But I love Dolly.. I hate to ride Dolly but I want her..(Sounds selfish doesn't it..):(
With the money I got for Dolly, I could buy a horse that suited me better... So what would you do..

Sounds like a good match in jobs! And Dolly is sure a pretty thing. Is the daughter a pretty good rider? Does she know about the episodes of bucking and temper? I wouldn't sell her to them if they (both the kid and the mother) weren't well aware of the issues and triggers and skilled enough to take that on and work through it.

Follow WB's advice and if they suit each other I'd go for it, because you will keep growing and if you already feel too big for her then it won't change. And if she's fast and you want slow......

I told her Dolly gets those episodes if she knows you are nervous or intimidated, and that she can be stubborn. But the mother said her daughter has been riding since she was six. And she eve went to championships last year in Pony Club mounted games, but has outgrown her current games pony and needs something taller.

OK :) Sounds good then, if you want to sell her. - As we know, some of those kids can be pretty tough riders and can be just the thing this horse needs. But you want to make sure she's one of those and not someone who is going to end up scared and frustrated.

If you weren't concerned about the money quickly, you could even do a free lease for a month or two to make sure it was going to work out before either of you commit.

If the girl gets along with Dolly, I think you should sell her. You'd be happier with a horse that suits you better.

I think your answer is obvious. You've had a match made in heaven layed right in your lap and you need to take advantage of it. It's the perfect opportunity to trade a horse not suited for you and get one that is. Riding is supposed to be FUN, not a dread. You've said before that you used to love it. It's time to get that love back! And it's time for Dolly to have some fun with a kid who can appreciate her for what she is! :)

Wow thanks so much guys!! This lady lives near me she said She has a barn so Maybe we could do some kind of 30 day trial thing to see if they really are the perfect match for Dolly. I can just see this stern little girl whipping Dolly into shape,:D she would be riding Dolly everyday. I only get to ride Dolly every other weekend or so..:rolleyes: Thanks FIAB what you said is really true, I do allot for the horses everyday.. I deserve to enjoy it right.

As long as the mother and daughter knows about the episodes with Dolly that you have had and still want her then it sounds like a good match to me. Sounds like just the thing for Dolly. Could you consider a lease like WB said?

Oh gosh, it does sound like a great opportunity for you to be able to buy yourself a nice trail horse that fits you better. And it sounds like the people really want Dolly. When someone wanted my Welsh pony many years ago, and I was not ready to sell her....what I did was go out to their place and see what it looked like and what their other horses and ponies looked like....it turned out the place was very nice, they took great care of their horses and ponies, and they were very nice people, so I let my Welsh mare go to them (she was too small for me too). But, in the end it is ultimately your decision. Go with your gut feeling.

Thanks everyone, I told them all about Dolly. The good and the bad, and they still want to come see her. They also want me to come see there ponies and place she will be staying..:) I would usually cry my eyes out at the thought of selling Dolly but.. I am excited. Whats wrong with me!!

It must feel like the right thing to do. :)

And I wouldn't expect you won't have moments of sadness in all this to come, but trust your spidey senses on this, if what you would feel is relief and excitement to see her go and find a different horse, then you and Dolly were not a match meant to be.

Well I'm coming in late and everything already been said, but I AGREE! I think that you are excited about selling her because you know it's a great thing for you and Dolly both. A 30 day trial (or even a 2 week if she's riding every day) sounds like a good idea too, if you aren't in a hurry.

Having a horse you aren't comfortable on and don't like to ride isn't the best. Ask me. I know. ;) But I am working on it and it's more of my issues than my mares. But if an opprotunity came along like this for me.. I might take it!

What a great situation if it all works out. Like everybody has said, you have to take care of you and you won't be able to ride if you are on a horse that you are not in sync with. CAn't wait to hear what happens. You DO DESERVE to have the horse that will fit your needs...Good luck!

That does sound like it could be quite the perfect match. I say, give it a go. Dolly is a beautiful girl and could fulfill this little girl's dream of owning a pretty pony! ^_^

I agree with everyone else, I think it soundslike a great oppurtunity-- Dolly would be going to the perfect home and you would finally be able to get the horse you want to get.

I felt the same way about April that you felt about Dolly. I really do like April and I didn't want to let her go, but I figured it would be the best for both of us. She's gorgeous and a total sweetheart on ground but undersaddle she's just not what I'm looking for and I dont think I'm well suited for her.

But I hope everything works out for the best. If you decide to go along with this, I look forward to seeing what new horses you come across!

Uhhh! I am so relieved!! Thanks so much guys!! My parents even think it is a good idea, and the loooove Dolly, I could see Dolly all the time also. I am glad some of y'all have been through this, that makes me feel like I'm not a terrible owner(Selling for selfish reasons..)
Alittle Update, I have been emailing the people who want Dolly, and as far as I can tell they are so friendly. And know what there doing with horses, the daughter is going to be in a dressage show tomorrow.. They want to come see Dolly on Sunday.

Id give it a try. Make sure there is a contract. Any injuries of the girl riding Dolly are not your responsibility, make sure that is in there. Any horse medical issues due to how she rides her, ect, they pay. That will give you a chance to see how she treats Dolly too. Ive seen some not so nice people that game, and want to beat them back. Not saying she will be mean. But it'll be nice to have that contract to save you $$, the girl issues, and Dolly if things dont work out.
I sure hope this works out 100%, cause you need a horse more suited for you.

I think that if you feel right about it it would be a great idea! You could still visit Dolly since she'd still be in Monroe, but then you could build your confidence and be riding all the time if you had a nice slow horse! Dolly knows you love her, and she would know that you weren't just giving her up to anyone!

How tall is Dolly? What size horse would you want?

I think it sounds as if it maybe meant to be, I have sold a few horses and while it was hard to see them go, they went to great homes and it let me be able to get myself another horse more suited for me.

Thanks JGH that is a great thing, I am going to see there place were they would keep Dolly Sunday as well. Dolly is 13.3hh and I want a horse around 15.2 min. The bigger the better.

Thanks Remali, I think so to, yeah..It's going to be hard, we'll see how it all goes, and if it was ment to be.

Just a thought... is the Dressage show she is going to be near you where you might be able to go and watch her ride so you can see what kind of rider she is?

Well, I ride a 13.2 hand pony and I weigh 200 pounds so I guess my question is, how small is Dolly? My mare keeps up with our Tennessee Walker just fine, I ride her in dressage AND speed events, and other than being somewhat narrower than the full horse I don't notice the difference when I ride. Its nice to have a horse that is short because it is easier to mount!!

That said, my bratty pony mare is NOT a child's horse, and will only let ME ride her, or the lady that trained her. I would have to look far and WIDE to find a young person talented enough to ride her.

OOPS - I just saw that you said she is 13.3 hands. That is practically a horse...but I've got a pretty special bond with my brat. I am 5' 8" and it doesn't bother me what others think. Most kids could not ride her anyway.

That is such a great match! LMM, I think you have to seize the opportunity whilst you've got it. People selling their horses wish every day for someone who can fit their horse's needs, and you've just got what sounds liek a perfect match.
I know it hurts so badly to have to let Dolly go, after everything you've tried with her, but if it's too much and you can see Dolly enjoying herself more with this other girl, then it's the right thing to do.

It sounds like a great match (I don't know how I missed this yesterday)! My old gelding Rusty and I never got along, I loved him, but our personalities clashed in the worst ways. I was sad when I sold him, but I was sooo happy that he and his new owners got along so well. :) When it's the right thing, it feels right - and it certainly sounds like this feels right! Go you!

If this goes through, I can help with the new-horse search if you want. ;)

If it does go through, you guys will defiantly have to help me find my new perfect horse. :)
Thanks so much for all the support everyone!!

I just sold my paint... I always thought he was a mustang. The woman who bought him is younger than I am and does agility races, extreme cowboy races, etc. She is very happy with him and I got a new horse that I feel so good on. It was the right decision, but difficult to make.
If they want to buy her...go for it!!! Other than the fact that I'm much older than you, the scenarios sound almost identical.

Thanks, I am glad so many other people have been in my place. I am crying now thinking about it.. Lol.
It hurts alot but, I still want to see if this is the right thing.

well it sounds like its a perfect choice! Dolly would love it! getting to go all out and fast and this girl sounds like she has experience enough not to pull all over her face and clamp her legs things like that
and whats the point of riding if you don't enjoy it! Its a hobby! not a job :) well for some people but you know what im saying

I agree with everyone too. I know you love her, but it would be better especially if the girl will be riding her every day.. That is better for her.If she is neer buy,, you can go and see her. Then you can get a horse that suits you better and enjoy yourself more out there. Keep us posted how things go.

To risk sounding like a broken record on this thread, I agree with everyone else. I've sold some horses and felt good about each sale. One went on to be a competitive and successful show jumper, another a great trail horse, and another to someone she actually LIKED (this mare liked NO ONE!!).

You just know when its right sometimes.

I totally get you on the bigger horse thing. I love smaller horses for getting on, but nothing beats a big horse to ride. I dont feel comfortable on anything under 15.1 hands. the TWH I sold was BARELY 15 hands, and a very petite critter, and I am MUCH more comfortable on my 16 hand Baloo now. :)

What area are you in, my friend in Millersville, PA is selling a sweet QH gelding.
