View Full Version : Missing that "Small Town" Feel
quest

Ever since I moved back from Powell I am totally missing living in a small town! I love it when you run into people you know at the grocery store, see half of your friends at Walmart, see people you know driving around, etc. It is so much easier to make friends. Back in Spokane here I feel so lost! I know if I see someone on the street i'll probably never see them again. Sure there are some advantages such as having more to do, but the more I live life and the more places I live, the more I realize I want to live in a smaller town :) What are your preferences?

I prefer to live in the middle of nowhere but no more then an hour from a larger city. Just in case there is a problem the larger city will have better medical (and the shopping is better). But for day to day I prefer the peace and quiet or isolation.

My preference is to not go to town at all, any more. :)
I'm definitely not keen on the big city... When we do go out, we usually want someplace familiar, and it's good if they already know what I want to order.
You can find places like that, to make you feel familiar in a big town, you just have to go to them regularly enough that they become that. :)
Actually growing up in the country and now living in the city.... I love the city.
Don't have to drive 30-45 minutes for good food. Grocery store isnt 10 miles away. everything now is right there. You get to see a lot more people. I'm a home body but I do like feeling like I'm not in the boonies.

When i was in Powell we were about an hour and fifteen minutes from Billings where we had malls, costco, and all that stuff. It would have been nice if it was a little closer (45 minutes or so). Cody was 25 minutes away and had a Walmart. I think I would love to live on the suburbs of a small town so I can have horses and all that, but am not too far from the convenience of a grocery store and the social aspect. It did get very boring and it wasn't exactly scenic around town, but I would love a small town around the same size that is more outdoor recreation friendly.

Ive lived in big and small citys and small towns.
I dont care where I go, I just want people to be honest, friendly, and care about their neighbors.
Ive had all that in the big and small citys, and one small town, but here? If you havent been here, know certain people, you are lost in the cracks or have to socialize with the lower class rednecks. Im in that crack and it sucks. I live a very depressing life because of it.
Here, the people I would like to socialize with, that have proper horse knowlege, care about themselves, ect, are usually married and their husbands are into horses, so it makes me an outcast with my husband not being around, nor have the horse drive that I do. I live single and am considered a 3rd wheel, even though Im married.
And yes, it IS like that here for me.
Ask anyone who knows me, who is married how many times they call me, ask me to do something with them, and why they dont. Why I dont hang with single folks, well, Im not single and looking or into the bar scene.
Ok, guess I shouldnt of looked here while Im having an anxiety attack.

I'm sorry vicklynn. In some ways I feel the same here for different reasons I suppose. I just haven't made friends or anything really and don't know where to go! It seems in college it was SOO easy to make friends because you see the same people day after day. Over here, I don't! It was so nice when my friend from Wyoming brought her horse up here and we rode together, it really made me miss Wyoming. I'm probably going back for a few weeks next month though, gonna work a few weeks at my old job at the ranch which makes me real happy, I miss that job dearly!

Not trying to be rude (sounded a little rude to me after I posted it...). I know I missed N. I. so much that I moved back as soon as I had the money to.

What she said. :)
I live in Dothan, Al right now and our house sits in a cul de sac.. I hate having neighbors so close. You have absolutely NO privacy whatsoever. Everyone's all up in your yard messin with your stuff and you can't do anything about it because sometimes you may have to go into their yard to get your dog or something. That and there's also the fact that there isn't enough room to stretch cause if you do, you're on someone else's property.
Yes, I definitely think you should move back. Get a place up on the South Fork big enough for all your forum friends, too! ;)
I've lived in cities, teeny towns, and far from town. My favorite is far from town, 60 miles or more. I can enjoy large cities, too, though. Just don't want to make one my home.

I'm not moving back for a number of reasons. Although I had a great job, friends (many will be gone though after school though anyways), etc.
1. I am going back to finish school and get my bachelors (which there isn't a university there)
2. I can't handle/don't like the Winter very well. The job I had was an outdoor job, I got minor frostbite a few times and now even in 30-40 degree temps with two pairs of mittens on my fingers have the worse pain and my feet NEVER warm up. My job was a BIG reason I didn't want to leave, but Winters are hard.
3. Recreation wise, you have to drive about 30-40 minutes to do a whole lot outdoors. South Fork is GREAT for that, but the Winters are even worse ;)
When i'm out of school I really want to find a small town in Arizona where i'll be close to places where I can go hike/bike/ride etc.

I'm with dame wolf. I prefer a small town, but don't want to be too far from civilization. Mostly for healthcare, due to my son's medical condition (peanut allergy), and now my line of work as well I reckon..
I love seeing old classmates in the grocery store, or driving around town.. or on the 6 o'clock news. :hysterical:

Arizona?!?! I would surely melt if I lived down there... I think the desert is beautiful but I'm dying here in WA today with the 94 degrees!
I LOVE Enumclaw because it is a small town known to be a "horse community", there are about 20 places to go riding within an hour, I live on ten acres on a rural road with farming neighbors AND I'm an hour to Seattle or Tacoma!
