So...I've been thinking since Monday's lesson and thinking about it during today's lesson... Could I possibly see myself leasing a mare??? I've always preferred geldings but this mare I've been riding...there is something that pulls at my heart about her. No one at the barn likes her (she apparently bugs out with a lot of people in the barn) but she's never offered a spook with me. I just kinda feel for her. She is up for lease and sale. Today my trainer told me she would be the horse to teach me how to jump. I wonder if she could be the one for me. If I lease her I can build a strong relationship with a strong horse. I never once imagined myself with a mare but could she be the one? Am I ready for a lease? Anyone who has advice or an opinion I'd love to hear it. :)

I think if you feel a connection with her and think you both click go with it.
Just because she's a mare doesn't mean she won't work out, and since your riding her before hand and know how she is. I say give her a try atleast. ;) Sounds like she could be a wonderful girl.
I know my opinions not worth alot, but I think if you think it's good go for it. Go with what your gut says. ;)

Oh ps I haven't spoken to my trainer about this at all. She hasn't even mentioned leasing her to me so this is all just an idea I've been tossing around in my head.

Certainly no harm in continuing to head towards the idea :)

I think if your trainer thinks your ready you should! I bet she would help a ton with the confidence difficulties you had talked about in your "I want to scream" thread. She sounds like she clicks with you and knows how you feel about some parts of riding. She really cares about you, an seems like more than she does other riders. Do I sound like a nut job right now?

I would certainly think about it! think about the cost- a lot of people now are up for a care lease so make sure they aren't going to ask too much. Also think about the other costs involved and whether or not in the end it will be cheaper to do lessons and other rides or to lease her. i would just think about all the possible pros and cons and weigh them :) good luck and i hope it works out for you!

I think you should deffinately look more into it and talk to your trainer... You'll never know unless you try :) And if you're lucky enough to find that horse you click with really well, don't let go unless you have to.

How old is she and how much experience in the ring?

I had a free lease of a mare before Buster, and then a free lease of Buster before I bought him. I did thoroughly enjoy the process of building a relationship with "one horse" in each case. It was completely different than riding lesson horses.
My only concern here is that she's a lot of horse. You describe her as a strong horse that other people have expressed concern about. I just wouldn't want her to shake your confidence. When I was getting going, I was very upfront in telling the horse people who were helping me that I couldn't be on horses that required too much of me. It wasn't a matter of getting hurt as much as it was one of building confidence.
If you feel like your trainer understands your desire to become confident and comfortable, some of the challenges you faced in NJ, and so on, then I think this horse is definitely worth considering leasing. I trusted my mentor and he steered me in the right direction.

She is 13 years old she has shown successfully in 3' 6''.
JackieB I think you have a very good point that crossed my mind for sure. My trainer knows where I stand and if she says no go then it's a no go. To be completely honest I want to get over my fears and I think that building a relationship with this particular horse will be grabbing the bull by it's horns.
She is getting a new lesson horse in that is going to be a huge confidence booster for me (what she tells me) and I'll ride her next week. Her main focus is to get my confidence back and then put me on Tally again.
PS she is the mare I'm on in my new avatar :)
oh and I'd never be able to buy her because she is 25-50 thousand dollars. When she first came into the barn she was skin and bones and the people wanted 35k. :(
