I spoke to my trainer about leasing and the deal is if I were to do a 1/2 lease I'd pay a monthly fee which would include 2 rides a week (one of them a lesson) -this would only cost 40 dollars more than I'm paying for lessons once a week as it is...

However, I would be responsible for 1/2 vet and farrier bills. She does not have shoes on at the moment.
Does this sound "normal". I'm only slightly concerned because this horse is for sale (and will stay on the market) and if someone were to come and ride her with out me knowing or if she were in lessons (which if she were mine she wouldn't be) and is injured during these events is it fair for me to have to pay 1/2 of the vet bills? I understand if she is injured while I'm riding her paying 1/2 vet bills but not so much if someone else is riding her who I don't even know or have control over saying they can or cant.

Does this make sense? I'm sorry if it's all jumbled and a huge run on sentence. I'm a bit excited that this may be a serious possibility to me but I'm leary about the 1/2 vet bills.

Hey Horseaholic, or dummy!!
I absolutly would not agree to that they are taking you in. And yes maybe if you were the only one riding the horse. Be very careful of leases.

Well, it's not normal for leases I've personally done. I've never done the half lease thing and would not do a half lease that had high expenses AND a limited access to the horse. I don't think it sounds like a good deal for you at all.

When I leased, it was a 'free' lease, but I covered all expenses as if he was mine. Did I probably pay more? Yes... but it was free and clear. No one else rode him, and I was free to show him and take him on trail rides, and go where I wished, any time, just as if he was mine. I could even breed or geld him if I wished (he was a stallion). They just wanted him looked after, but didn't want to sell him.

Other free leases I know of the owner does still keep some of the expenses... and sometimes retains the right to ride sometimes. Those kindof 'halfway' situations where others will be using him too, does sound like a potential problem, to me.

Well...welcome colcowboy...

I do have options for a full lease but I personally can't do it because of time. I'm starting school in August and will be commuting an hour north two days a week and I'm still trying to find a job. I have an option for 5 days a week riding but I just can't do that time wise. 2 days a week will be pushing it for me... I can show her now even with out leasing her. (I may even be showing her in two weeks) I'd just like to be able to work on ground work with her and what not so everything in the terms actually work for me beside the 1/2 vet bills. I'm interested to hear what others have to say as well.

I would never make anyone pay for farrier and vet bills if they leased my horse. Doesn't sound like that great of a deal. You are also doing her a favor by keeping her horse conditioned...just my two cents

:banghead: I'm never gonna find a deal...unless I buy around here. :( And horse prices are out of control.

This horse is going to get ridden whether I lease her or not. My trainer takes in peoples horses and puts show miles and riders on them until they are sold. I'm not doing anyone a favor except myself here if I were to lease her. I'm just giving them a "bonus". :/

First calling a kid a dummy is extremely tasteless. If you have good advise give it instead of insulting her. Though I do agree this lease idea sounds like a bad deal for Horseaholic.

Keep your chin up girl, the right deal is out there for you, but I would pass on this one.

Horseaholic,
I agree with Appylover that this might not be the best of deals for you.
Good luck with your search. You'll find the right one soon:)

And as for you Mr. Colcowboy, you need to learn a little etiquette. I hope you don't work with horses like you talk to people ROUGH!!!
Good luck with the forum Colcowboy, your going to need it;)

It's alright. ;) I figured I wasn't going to start off on the wrong foot w a new member :) I know I'm not a dummy. I clearly stated I didn't feel comfortable n that's why I started the thread. Now, a dummy would have just assumed and said okay that sounds great! and never consulted my forum fam.
Thanks for the hugs. I could use em.

I emailed her to clarify and she said the owner pays 100% of emergency vet bills and I'd only pay half of the wormer and vaccines. Does that still sound out of the park?

That sounds affordable... it actually seems a little silly, because that's just a few bucks in the wider scheme of things.

So you wouldn't have to pay for shoes and vet bills then? That sounds better. Wormer and vaccines sound more in the ball park.

Did you specifically ask about paying half farrier, what about half board? With the horse market the way it is there are plenty of people out there that would be willing to do a care lease (you pay for the horse's expenses, nothing else, and you get to hang out with the horse whenever you please and many people will let you keep it at your barn).
If it cost fourty dollars more and you only get two rides a week, one a lesson, wouldn't it be cheaper to have just two lessons a week? That's two rides as well- in the form of lessons. ! i doubt your lessons are 40 dollars a piece so it would probably be cheaper. Anyways, i think a half lease should include three days of riding if you are paying half the maintenance.

lol My lessons are more than 40 dollars a lesson. So I'd basically be able to ride her 4 more times a month for the less than the price of one lesson. I take lessons (private) at this barn so the horse is already at the barn I would keep her at if she were mine. This horse is going to sell for 35-50 thousand dollars and the person wont take her off the market unless I pay a ridiculous fee per month. Which not only can I not afford but can't do time wise. I would be paying half the board if I were to do the half lease. She does not have shoes so I'd be paying half of 35 dollars every 5-6 weeks.
