View Full Version : Back to School shopping

Well it looks like I will be going back to public school.:( I don't want to but... that's another story. But anyways, going back means school shopping. And my closet has next to nothing in it that I will actually wear and I hate all my clothes. I really need some new stuff and a whole new look. I'm a "blah" faze.

My problem is I am very hard to fit because I am so freaking short, but not skinny. I am only 5 ft tall and my legs are really short. Everything about me is short. I even have tiny hands and feet. I wear a size 3/5 in jeans and small or medium in shirts, depending on brand and style, etc. But I'm not skinny. I'm short and stocky, which is probably why my dad calls me a Hobbit. Which makes things just difficult. (not him calling me a hobbit, just the whole being short thing;))

I can never seem to find decent jeans that come in short. They're all regulars with inseams so long you can't even begin to see my feet. I mean WAY too long. If I do find short jeans they usualy have ONE style that comes that way, and the other 10-15 styles are all regular.:nono: Hemming is not an option because I can't sew and my mom's hates to, and I HAVE to have flare jeans. I can't stand skinny jeans unless they're tucked in to my boots or something, and even that is not a look I wear very well. I mean I think skinny jeans look great on some people, but not me.
I really like this outfit, but stuff just never fits me right because of the way I'm built.:( http://www.jcpenney.com/jcp/backtoschool.aspx?DeptID=67787&CatID=67787&cmAMS_T=X2&cmAMS_C=C1&CmCatId=67787
ETA: awe, that link isn't bring up the right thing. I like the outfit with the red and black checked button up and flare jeans.

I LOVE these jeans: http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?DeptID=50455&CatID=51767&GrpTyp=PRD&ItemID=1687517&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CMID=50455%7c50460&Fltr=&Srt=&QL=F&IND=6&cmVirtualCat=&CmCatId=50455|50460|51767&tagpageview=true
http://www2.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?DeptID=50455&CatID=51767&GrpTyp=PRD&ItemID=1719f49&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CMID=50455%7c50460&Fltr=&Srt=&QL=F&IND=7&cmVirtualCat=&CmCatId=50455|50460|51767
But do they come in short? Nope.

Does anyone else have this problem? If yes, where do you buy your jeans? Or do you just deal with the way too long ones? That's what I do now, but I think it makes me look even shorter and fatter and they just don't fit right. Nothing ever fits right, but jeans especially. I just need a whole new look. Lol, I wish I could get like a whole new makeover. I need a fashion consultant and a credit card with no limit.
I will have a JC Penny or Sears gift card this weekend tho, an early birthday present. And whatever cash I can scrape up.

aww..lizzy you and me both! I can never get any jeans to fit and none of my jeans really fit well right now! :banghead:I'm feeling the same way latly, most of my clothes just don't fit right!!! :(

My sister calls me a hobbit too... I'm 4' 10" so things are hard to find! I normally have to deal with the longness. Have you tried petites? those seem to fit me sometimes, juniors are just wayyyyyyyy too long. I can fold them up onto my feet ! :( The sad part is my best pair of jeans right now were a kids large and they wre $5  lol but I have 2 pairs of fitting jeans ATM.

Off to look at your links

I totally can relate... I'm only 4' 8" Though I'm skinny, too, which makes it worse- stuff is too long & too big in the waist.
They tend to be a bit more pricy, but Aeropostle (did I spell that right? I don't think so, lol. :innocent: ) seem to fit me pretty good- they have a LOT of sizes... short enough for short people. :) There's these other jeans I got from JC Penny's (they are skinny jeans, though) that fit really good, too... I'll have to check on the brand. Other than that... jeans never fit me, either. /=

haha! Anyone else find it funny how our heights go up pretty much by incriments of 2 inches?

Do you have an Urban behavior there? Their short jeans tend to fit well and are usually wicked cute. I know Aero has short jeans too, and they have things on sale often.

I know you don't sew but they have iron on "hemming tape" (I think that's what it's called) that you can use. If you can iron, you can do it! They sell it at any sewing supply store and may even have it in the craft/sewing section at walmart? It will stay in place, even through washing and is easy to redo if you need. Just a suggestion.;)

Try Old Navy Jeans, they always come in a short! And they're reasonably priced! I'm short and wide with no waist, so I always have a hard time finding jeans. For the past few years I've only worn wranglers and old navy, but I recently rediscovered Levis. They've redone their jeans line, and I really like them! They fit great, and actually give some room in the rear!

Do you have a plato's colset near you? That's a great place to get some good shirts without spending alot of cash!

Best of luck to you! I feel your pain, I have no fashion sense and I hate to shop!

If you and your mother don't sew, is there a place you can go to get them hemmed? I know a lot of dry cleaners around hear do that, it might be something to look into. Best of luck hun!

I'm 5'6 but I have shorter legs and have to buy much of my pants in petite sizes. You just find a 3/5 petite instead of 3/5 regular. Many brands carry them in many styles, I like the aeropostale ones, so good luck to you, I feel your pain!

I am 4'11 and I get most of my jeans at Old Navy. They make short jeans and the waist is from low to at the waist. Their size 1 short fits me perfect. They have lots of styles for all age groups and they really are not that expensive. Good luck with your clothes shopping.

Let the flogging begin...... :whack::trout:.... Yup that's what you get for being a size one!!!

Oh and Lizzie, if I see/hear you complain one more about being a size 3, you're getting the same!!!!

I feel your pain, I'm 5' tall and don't weigh alot but all my weight is in my stomach so I need the waiste size bigger but then the legs are too big even if they are short enough. It's maddening. I have finally given up and bought riding jeans, I stick them in my boots and they are tight around my legs but stretch enough for my stomach. I do have to cuff them though since they are always too long but since they are in my boots it doesn't matter. I THOUGHT Authentic Brand Twenty X Jackson by Wrangler size 5 fit me 'til I saw a picture of me wearing them. You can get them in all different rises and lengths etc. so I thought that was great. Then I saw the picture, I need the 5 to go around my stomach but my hips or legs don't need a 5, I look like I'm wearing someone else's big jeans so I have given up except for the riding jeans which you wouldn't like. I might try Old Navy [If the mall in Scranton still has one] since so many seem to find things that fit there.

Good luck finding them, if you do let us know! I'll then make a trip to see if I can find something to fit my odd body. This is what I end up looking like and I know it's not a look you want but I got to the point of desperation! Short legs, skinny legs but big stomach! I guess I'm standing very odd in this picture, this was when I met Rompy in VT and the girl was trying to teach me Parelli stuff. I sort of picked some things up but not everything. I look like I'm going to fall over my feet!

Oh yeah I forgot when I was your age finding jeans was not that hard because cuffing them was in style so I could get them too long and cuff them, that was nice and easy.

That would help :). If u have a tape measure for sewing then use that. Otherwise just use a regular tape measure and lay out a pair of jeans that fit u nicely and measure from the crotch to the end then let me know what your inseam is :D

Aeropostale actually isn't that expensive at all!! Most of the jeans I have gotten there for $20 or less, they have more expensive ones but the stretch ones are a lot cheaper. Plus, they have really good sales. Hollister IS very expensive though

Ok, if I was measured correctly, my inseam is 28"ish. Does that sound right? I only have one pair of jeans that are Shorts, so I measured those ones because the length is pretty good on them. But really anything shorter than the "regular" jeans is good with me, lol.:p

Around my area, I know the Buckle has the Silver jeans and you can get them in like a 28" inseam, but those are expensive. Vanity has them in 28's and they are somewhat cheaper. Aero and American Eagle has shorter inseams. Not sure on other places, but those are a few I know of. I am 5'2" and kinda hard to fit, so I know your pain. Good luck in shopping, you'll find something I'm sure! Oh what about the catalogs Alloy and Delia's I think they have shorter inseams too!

Thanks for the links!:) I'm going to do some shopping Saturday (and we're going to visit my grandma in the "big city" and they have a much better mall than we do;)) and hopefully I can find some decent, short jeans at Aeropostale or Old Navy or something! If not, I may have to start buying online, although I wouldn't know if I needed a 3 or a 5 because it depends on the brand and stuff.

Awh man, I feel your pain, too! Except the other way around kinda... I have a hard time buying jeans being a size 0 or 1 and being 5"10 ! LOL I swear it's almost impossible and it gets friggin' costly!

Have you tried a Bluenotes store?

Old Navy jeans come in REALLY short lengths.

I'm pretty short, a little taller than you, but still. I'm 5'3" and the best brand of jeans I've ever found are American Eagle. Infact, now I almost won't wear anything but those. They're so darn comfy. I'm curvy and I wear their skinny jeans (LOVE LOVE LOVE them, wear them almost every day), they also have nice flare jeans. :)

Your mom does not sew but she runs a clothing store? Does she have a sewing machine? Does your public school offer Home Ec? Mine did, and the Home Ec lady was stupid but I had to take Home Ec as an 8th grader - it was required.

I more or less learned how to do the basics with a cheap sewing machine from Walmart by reading the manual. Course, I'd watched mom over the years. You could hand sew a hem. You should learn how to sew someday anyway, its a valuable skill to have - my husband used to rip out his belt loops or knee on his jean a LOT...and I learned how to fix them, Zig zag all over the place, looked funny but he didn't care. And if you are the clothes horse that you say you are, you might enjoy creating your own clothes...if you had the time, ha ha ha, Sewing or Geometry??

Dakota Sunrise

Miracle Whip: her clothing store has nothing to do with sewing, lol. I mean occasionally she'll put a missing button back on, but that's about it. I mean she *can* patch jeans or hem some what, but she hates doing it. And I don't blame here because I don't have the patience or the skills for sewing either. She does have a sewing machine, but it doesn't get much use, lol. Plus hemming jeans takes some of the flare out of them, and they're never flared enough for me in the first place. I took home dec (kind of like home ec) in school, and we did do *some* sewing, but not enough to teach me much. And my projects were disasters.:innocent: My poor cross-stitch lion looked like a sheep and the pattern was all messed up. I got decend grades (an A and a B) on our other two sewing projects, but I still messed them up quite a bit, and kept stabbing myself with the needle. I think my teacher just took pitty on me.:p I earned quite a reputation in that class after the glue gun incident, and the cross stitched lion-that-looks-like-a-sheep ordeal.:innocent:

UPDATE:

Well I went shopping Saturday and I actually did pretty good.:) I found short jeans in Penny's (the JC Penny at the mall down where my grandma lives is wayyyy bigger than the tiny store we have up in my neck of the woods;)), and also in Rue 21.:) I ended up with Arizona size 5 short ( grr, I wanted the 3's. It doesn't make any sense because the jeans I was wearing while I shopped were 3's.) at JC Penny, and also a 4 petite. Usually I can't wear 4's because Missus jeans never fit me right, I need juniors. But I found some that were low rise flare and even had little rips and stuff on them, so they fit like Jr. jeans.:)

Here's some of the stuff I got::) (I had a JC Penny gift card because of my birthday, and my grandma also bought me an outfit for my bday present, and my other grandma gave me $20 bucks for clothes as well (also because of my bday). I actually had lots of money to spend for once in my life and got to shop without looking at price tags! I NEVER get to do that! It was amazing!:p) There was some really awesome sales going on tho, like buy one get one for $1.00.:)

Anyway, yeah, here's some of the stuff I got:

Sewing isn't bad once you get the bobbin figured out. Looking back, I didn't do too hot in Home Ec either, but unless you know a seamstress its a good skill to have. Honest. Give it another try in a few years.
