I use it as a good skin cleaner upper when they start showing signs of any sort of skin condition. (with my oldies they do that at the drop of a hat. . .) I also use it on any sort of cut or scrape to help heal it. I bought mine at a tack store a long time ago and still have some. . so I'm not much help in figuring out where to get it!!

Welll... this is cheating but the conversation was long - so I'm posting the links to our conversations from h.com. http://forum.horse.com/tm.asp?m=436013&mpage=1&key=tea%2Ctree%2Coil%2Cterpinen

You can find it online or in any health food store... and you can get some (not therapeutic grade usually but if it's just for hooves or something...) at Walmart.

It is antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral so you can use it on TONS of things. If you do buy the good stuff - it is strong and you need to cut it with extra virgin olive oil before using it on anything sensitive like large skin areas - or in my case, in my Golden's ears. It also has some "DMSO type qualities" in that it soaks into the skin and takes other things with it - so WASH well any part of the skin you apply it to.

Kind of pricey here at $21 but I've never looked for it elsewhere.

Tea tree oil can be found at health food stores and co-ops, as well as through mail order catologs.

It's used in fly sprays, wound care, and countless other things I can't think of off the top of my head.

It's also a good cleaner.

I buy it at Walgreens (about 10 bucks). My farrier advised me to put in on my horse's hooves 2 - 3 times a week. He is prone to thrush and was advised it would help keep that at bay... Here's hopin :)

I buy it from http://www.melaleuca.com/ps/index.cfm?f=ps.productDetail&pid=3650 this company is all natural and most of their products have tea tree or "melaleuca" oil in them. Talk to me if you want to know more about it. :)

I use it a lot. I use Melalueca products, Melalueca is the bontanical name for tea tree oil. Melaleuca augustifolia, I believe. If you want to find out more, I will send you one of their catalogs...............I use their products because they are great for chemically sensitive people like me and are environmentally kind.

WB....tea tree oil has been around and use way before any of us hippies started using it! The indigenous people of Australia used it for centuries and it was a part of the Aussie Soldier's kit pack during WWI and WWII.

I swear by this stuff but quality will vary, it doesn't take much. I think the biggest bottle of the Melaleuca brand, the 2 oz is about $12. It lasts forever, they also have Melagel, which is a gel form.

It *is* good stuff. I finally found it only to discover my horse is allergic to it! (She peeled where ever it touched her!) I ended up finding a spray bottol of 'Fungusol' that does the trick! (I really should read what's in it!)

they sell a bunch of tee tree things in Dover (i think...) my riding teacher uses it and its awesome. It makes their coat really shiny and smooth, it is also very moisturizing. I like it, you could probably order some online.

It just needs the [/ that I made red above.... when deleting parts of posts in order to quote only part of it, make sure you don't delete part of the quote coding :)

This is where I get mine. It's the cheapest and best grade that I have found for the price.

http://www.puritan.com/tea-tree-oil-products-014/100-percent-pure-australian-tea-tree-oil-008871

They sell it in 2 oz glass bottles. They sell it like this:
buy 1 get 2 free for $9.99, buy 2 get 4 free and the deals keep getting better from there depending on how many you want. The shipping is low cost and it's pharmaceutical grade.

At are local drug stores they sell it in 1 oz bottles for 9.99 each! You can get 3-2oz bottles (6oz) for the same price ($9.99) off this site and it's better grade! I have 10 bottles of TTO in my bathroom drawer so I am prepared. lol

StarKitten,

I am going to start Treating Muffin's hooves with TTO too. He has thrush but I think it's almost cleared up. It was just the bigging of it so we caught it early. But, I am going to start using TTO as a regular maintenance every week in the summer and spritz him with peroxide once or twice a week in the winter. That should keep him from getting thrush again along with picking out his feet everyday.

I started a routine of picking them out during his morning and night feedings. He stands there and eats while I pick them out. lol

I figure in the summer it's dry out so I can use the TTO with out it drying out his hooves but in the winter it's rainy so I will switch to peroxide because there is little risk of drying out his hooves in the wet season. Also, wet season the feed price is higher and TTO is expensive when you are using it all the time so switching to peroxide will help offset the cost some.

I have also been told I can use Listerine to clear up Thrush or as a maintenance to prevent it.

Just some ideas for you to think about. :)

I think I might have been confusing? TTO doesnt dry out hooves so use it in the summer and Peroxide can dry out hooves so use it in the winter.

yeah - my poor kid has been plagued by my own ignorance - I'm so happy I found a good farrier now - the peroxide seems promising too - I'll give anything a shot at this point - finally got him cleared up, but I have been warned it could come back - he is much closer to home now ( a block away versus 40 minutes) so I should be able to keep a close eye on him ;)

Starkitten,

Yeah, I know what you mean. Muffin wouldn't have gotten it if I would have been picking out his feet regularly. I didn't think he could get it with how hot and dry it is here. The ground is dry as a bone out there in his pen so I wasn't picking out his feet at all. Even if I did pick them up and look it's just dry dirt in there, So I thought. Tell the farrier found the beginnings of thrush a week ago. I couldn't believe he had thrush in this dry heat. I felt so bad about neglecting his feet and thinking he wasn't at risk for thrush. But any horse is at risk if they step in manure and don't get it knocked out of there feet or picked out by a human. If left up in there even in the driest of heat it will grow thrush.

Now, I know it can happen on a dry lot in triple digits heat so I will be picking out his feet regularly and it's a good thing we caught it before winter so I can get it cleared up and keep up with maintenance so he won't get it again.

I guess you live and learn and share your story's. Maybe someone will read this and start picking out there horses feet more so they won't ever have this happen to them. I sure felt bad when I first found out he had thrush and I bet you did too with your horse.

i sure did feel bad - he has enough issue that he sure didn't need thrush on top of everything else. I am so happy to be educated now so at least that won't happen :)
