My cinch rings on both sides have rubbed the hair off my poor fat horse. It's a good mohair cinch, the kind I've always used, but I won't ride again until I get a new cinch because I don't want to rub sores. I'm looking at neoprene cinches that overlap the rings so that there isn't any ring to body contact. So here's my question, for a fat horse would a roper cinch or a straight cinch be better? I ride western with a back cinch and a breast collar. What do you think?

If you like your cinch then just get cinch guards. They go over the rings and have a fleece backing. Here is a set I found fast to show you what I am talking about. I'm sure there are others and in different colors but you get the idea.

The purpose of a roper cinch is to provide more support for the saddle and horse when the rider is roping cattle. The wider surface area provides more stability and distributes the pressure better. I prefer a little bit wider and contoured girths for my english/dressage because I think its a little more comfortable for them.

I like the wide mohair cinches that are wide in the middle and taper down at the sides. I am going to have to get some of these cinch gaurds for my cinch when I start riding Muffin. I like the mohair chinches, they look more natural with a western saddle to me and I like how they breath well and conform to the horse. But, those D rings with no backing is a problem and I think weaver came out with a new cinch that's easy to tighten and has the backing on the D rings. I will have to go find it... I'm pretty sure they came out with a new one in the mohair design...Hmm.. let me go see :)

Just looked... I was thinking of the weaver leather "smart cinch" and they do have it in mohair but the D ring has no backing so you would still need a set of cinch guards for it. I guess I will just stick with the cinch I have and get the cinch guards too :)

This is what I was thinking of in regards to a roper cinch for a fat horse, stability and comfort. I wanted a few opinions before spending even more money yet on new cinches. The good mohairs are spendy! I will look for some cinch covers as that seems the best solution next to purchasing yet another cinch!
