"Although Henderson would not give details on pricing, the first-generation Volt is expected to cost near $40,000, making it cost-prohibitive to many people even if gasoline returns to $4 per gallon."

LMAO....yep, that's a car we can all afford !!!!

And the next sentence is. . .
The price is expected to drop with future generations of the Volt, but GM has said government tax credits of up to $7,500 and the savings on fuel could make it cost-effective, especially at 230 miles per gallon (98 kilometers per liter).

It's a prototype. Don't buy it this year, or ever, but in the future, the technology will come down. I see it as a good thing. Cause one day we will run out of gas. Not in your lifetime, maybe not in mine, but I don't just think about me. . .

Great... just what we need. More smug-spewing hippywagons. With all the Priuses (Priui?) around Seattle it's already hard enough to breathe through all the smug.

I'm actually all in favor of electric cars, and someday they'll be a great thing. But the state of battery technology is simply not quite there yet.

The people buying these things shouldn't fool themselves though. In most of the country these cars are coal-powered.

but GM has said government tax credits of up to $7,500 .

Yet MORE of my hard earned tax dollars going into the GM black hole :D How much you wanna bet the retail price goes UP by the same percentage of tax credit :D LOL

Maybe in 5 years there will be better battery technology.....but you're right, never buy a prototype !

Just as ethanol was not the answer, neither is battery power. The harm to the environment, if that is truly the concern, is significant when it comes time to dispose of them.

You mean Pious's, don't you, RD?

yup what she said, my sincere question about all of this is quite literally what about me? and the guys like me who dont get huge agricultural subsidies, small holding farmers and ranchers, if you will, who raise a couple or three horses, cows, sheep, goats, pigs, deer, produce, or what have you that depend on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks to get us down the road to auction, market, or processing plant? to create an electric dually that is capable of producing 300 horsepower would require battery arrays the size of a prius.......................Kevin

Isn't GM owned by our government? I must have missed something and not been paying much attention. But if the government does own/run GM, shouldn't the price just automatically be affordable to all citizens? Of course, as someone already said, our tax dollars are funding it anyway. I'm sure I'm way off base and out of date already :p
