So I have a younger sister, she is 11 but very mature for her age since she is the youngest. She reads a lot about history and has opinions on very complicated topics such as God, heaven, and suicide. Today one of the girl's mothers from her class called my mom telling her how she was worried about my sister. That she was talking about a book she read about ghost stories and about a poem and a song written by hell saken individuals like Edgar Allen Poe and Kurt Cobain.
Apparently the mother thought my sister was suicidial and thought she needed to see professional help because she is not talking about barbies. It got me upset, first my sister has never said anything about wanting to die, and is very close to God. She participates in church and prays. She does read poems and such and has a mature view on the world but she DOES NOT listen to a lot of Kurt Cobain's music or material not appropreiate. The only songs I allow her to listen to is Silver, Something in the Way, Serve the Servants, Pennyroyal Tea, and the unplugged version of Man who sold the world. None of these songs have bad messages or bad language. It just gets me angry, has my sister asked me what happened to the band....yes. Did I and my mom explain what a sin he committed...and how many people gave up their lives after he gave up his yes! Does my sister go around talking about this...not that I know of. Apparently the mother is worried because my sister told her daughter "O this song reminds me of a song Serve the Servants by Nirvana." I guess the daughter asked her mother if she knew the song and the mother was alarmed that someone who listen to such satan music.

Eh - the poor other mom will probably walk into daughter's room one day, discover a Harry Potter book, and commit the whole family to an exorcism. ;)

I would Rather a mother call me to tell me she is concerned than to keep it to herself and then at the funeral tell me she thought something was wrong. Maybe you should thank her instead of degrading her. We all have different values and morals. If MY daughter were listening to that type of music I too would be concerned because it is out of her norm. Suicide or self hurting is very high at that age. Better to be safe than sorry. Wouldn't you rather have a sister alive and well than 6 feet under???
It is often said that it takes a community to raise a child....

There have been no signs of suicide, my sister is like every other 11 year old, she has read poems written by Edgar Allen Poe in school and enjoyed them so she has read a few...my mother has read all the books she has ever read before my sister was allowed. No my sister doesn't listen to Hannah Montana or the Jonas Brothers but she listens to my dad's 80s rock, Aerosmith, and some of my 90s music that is appropreiate. All the mother heard was she listened to a song called Serve the Servants.
I was also exposed to 80s rock and 90s music when I was about 6 because my cousins who watched me were big fans...not only did I never understand any of the lyrics but I also never had suicidal thoughts when I was THAT age. When I did it was not on the music but because of abusive individuals in my life. Since I once did have this problem I DO know the signs of suicide as well as my mother.
YouTube - Nirvana - Serve The Servants
Not only is there no bad language or meaning in this song it also is a much of ramble to an 11 year old girl and most of the world. It isn't dark and has no suicidial message. I guess I could look at the sliver of goodness in this picture and see she was concerned...but of what....a girl listening to a harmless song? My mother doesn't call the mothers of boys in my sister's class who go on week long hunting trips and state that "they like to kill little animals"....because she is afraid that they will become a murderer.

I apologize if I came off nasty.. wasn't meaning to. I am jusat saying take it from the source and say thank you for your concern. A vast majority of the kids that are successful in suicide are the ones that no one suspected. I would be honored that she felt it important enough to bring it to your mom's attention be it good or bad.

I am also sorry that I was a bit rude and blunt in my response. I guess if it came from someone who I respected and such I wouldn't find it a bit annoying. Of course I didn't mention the past of me with this mother and her daughter I went to school with.
