I've heard this comment many times & the folks that use it either are very modest or have self-worth issues! Most of the folks I ride with a good "hands" & those less skilled are always trying to improve both themselves & their horses. The trails we ride range from steep & technical to fire roads. The one thing we always have when we ride is FUN! I'd like to think our mounts have a good time too! I tell folks our only judge is God & if He lets us come back alive its been a blue ribbon day!http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=321&pictureid=11149&thumb=1 ('http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/album.php?albumid=321&pictureid=11149')
That is a great tip. (:
Really great, and so true. Thanks for sharing.

:) I say this sometimes... but not usually to be humble about my own riding ability or the training of my horse, though I probably could be humble about both compared to some.
I usually say it to explain why I don't match, why I'm not wearing proper breeches and boots, and why Bay can often be seen in a western bridle and an English saddle that I've added a lot of rings to that I can tie stuff to. :) Because I'm free to do what I like, and what works. :)

Our turnout is well fitting, well maintained and comfortable, but we don't give much of a damn about style... We're just trail riders. :)

Oh, did I mention that the lady in the middle of the picture happens to be a gourmet chef?? She brings the best goodies. I've told her several times that we oughta just leave the horses at home & have a picnic! I myself am usually in charge of the adult beverages which varies from cold beer to Irish coffee. I've even been known to shake a martini or three after a ride!:cowboy:

Or you can roll like we do...just leave it in the truck for when you get back. Did I tell you about the chilled jumbp shrimp w/cocktail sauce & chicken wings we had last weekend?? Oh, I guess I just did!:p What we've been doing is just following the lead of football tailgaters. I hope they haven't copyrighted their ideas. ;)

This is one of the best things about this forum. Friendly banter back and forth between "friends" most of whom have never met before. I love it.
I really like the "tailgating" reference. Sounds like a lot of fun, just the way it should be.

If you can't have fun you might as well stay home & mow the lawn!:p

RockN.... I guess leaving it at the trailhead does sound easier... and plus, then the horses can have their own drinks and won't have to share ours. :p

Ranger... good times with friends, online and on the trail, that's what it's all about. :)
These are online friends I've actually gotten to ride with.... once when Harleys Owner came up here to ride with my hubby and me...
And once when I flew down to Oklahoma to ride with her and some other friends who came from Alabama. :)

I say it sometimes, but its not cause Im humble or have self issues. Its cause I am trying to put across that I ride trails to the person Im talking to and end the questioning with the word just in there. That way, they dont ask if I do this and that and other types of riding.
I say, I just trail ride and it ends the questions.
I do ride around the neighborhood and play at gaming some, but dont like to get all involved in the conversation...lol...I bad...LOL

Some of those so called "just trail riders" probably could outride many that have won high show awards.
Horsemanship is horsemanship, whether you're on the trail or in the ring.

I had a trail horse that I showed once(he wasnt fond of the arena)and he placed 5th over pro trained arena horses.
Just trail horses come with all types of training.

I guess I sometimes say that I'm "Just a trail rider"... I mean I really can't claim much else. Beauty is an ex-rodeo horse that I'm working to retrain for barrels, but I'm not a gamer, at least not yet anyway. Someday maybe. I hope so.
But in the mean time I trail ride with Dakota. Usually bareback, and if I actually do saddle up that means we're going for the better part of the day and packing a picnic lunch.:)
So yeah, I'm just bareback & western style trail rider, with a little bit of gaming and jumping thrown in when Beauty and I get bored with trotting circles and figure eights in the arena.:p

OK folks heres my idea. What I'll do is gather up several of my ridin' pards & we'll hit the road & show you how to roll! Of course this won't be free. Think of it as a clinic. You know the sort, the clinician blows into town, takes your money & leaves. But at least we'll leave you laughing!:p

Trail riders and horses have practical experience to handle different situations:
say you put an experienced trailrider & trailhorse out in the wilderness for a day to ride from point a. to b. they'd probably figure it out ok :) Put an experienced show horse & rider in, maybe they wouldn't find it so easy. But also, an experienced trail horse&rider could probably find their way around a ring if need be... :) If that didn't make sense, sorry, but I suck at explaining :p always sounds good in my head, but i never seem to get it out right on paper.

hahaha! Works for me!
When I tell people that I'm 'just a trail rider' I don't worry how they take it. I know what Koda and I can do and it's exactly what I want. Plus the few people that try and put me down because of it usually shut up when I ask them what their horse would do with a train passing 10-15 feet from them. Koda just stood there and watched it pass.

I was thinking about a friend of ours today that has a, nothing but ride in covered arena horse.
when two of our dogs and a goat disappeared into the ranch behind us that is nothing but high brush. We just cut out a section of the fence took off looking for them, scaring up a few deer and a couple of hogs. Our horses couldn't care less.
Her horses jump over the shadows of birds flying over. The white line in the parking area at the arena, total nut case until he steps in the arena...Ours guy whether it be trail riding at oak trails. riding along the county road between farm fields with combines and large tractors going by, riding to a friends place where you have to deal with the trains or gaming up at the show barn they accept it all .
Most folks know my husband and myself as plain ole trail riders.
If you enjoy your horse, it doesn't matter what you do. Trail riding is fun. It's kind of like exploring, or playing cowboy, and you get to share with friends.
I like the tailgating option, rnk. Sounds like really good times.

Rocknk you know how to wrap up a trail ride!
I rode with some friends in Utah last year and one of the ladies brought a couple bottles of wine along. We stopped at this beautiful overlook on top of the red cliffs and had wine, cheese, crackers and sausages! The wine really made the long ride back much more enjoyable, even when we got a little lost we thought it was pretty funny.;) I didn't think to look at how she had packed that wine along on her endurance saddle though. I'll have to ask her sometime...
