I was home alone on foal watch many years ago when Cricket had her colt ... I'm so glad I didn't look at the bottom of his hooves or I probably would have reported something was wrong and every one would have come traveling back from vacation early!!! I checked his hooves and I don't recall seeing them that way but I don't remember looking at the bottoms as Cricket became one mean momma lol!!!

That is very interesting to me. You learn something new everyday!!!

Looks like a mess, doesn't it? Though, from a female perspective, I guess I'm glad it doesn't come out as pointy as it will be in a month. ;)

Wow. Pretty neat!! Is that skin? So pieces just fall off as they walk and the hoof develops? Awesome.

Wow. That is so neat. I'll be breeding both my Haflingers next spring, now I know what to expect when our perfect little mules are born! (yep, mules!) I could see a major panic attack, not knowing that they are SUPPOSED to look like that!

we was keeping a friends horse, had the foal, we looked at the bottoms, and i asked why that stuff on the bottom of the feet and she said its to protect the uterus sp? from being cut or torn from the hoofs, and once the baby starts walking they will fluff off,

Wow, I never knew that! I guess I just assumed the baby came out with normal hooves, I didn't know that they looked like that and that parts of them came off! Thanks for sharing, I learned something today :)

steve - can you take pictures of the process of it turning into a 'normal' hoof? so we can see? i'm really curious now as to how it gets from that to what we know as normal!

Wow, Thats neat! I agree with Loves, can you take more pictures? Is this one of your babys or on your ranch? Can we see pics of the whole baby too:D

I hate to break it to everyone, but Steve is just pulling your legs. This is a clydesdale, it's a little known fact that they were crossbred with the creature from the black lagoon to better hold up in the marshy enviroments of Scotland. This is actually just the evolutionary "leftovers".

Farriers ought to know that farriers who pull on legs get kicked ;) No matter which farrier it is. :D

I cannot with this foot....but I will next year when we start foaling. That particular foal foot was from a colt we had 7 years ago, who was born with a heart defect and died (euthanized) when he was 4 months old. He had 2 holes in his heart, and about 40% of his blood was never getting oxygenated.

That is very interesting. I have seen one baby born, but have seen many just a couple hour old babies. I'm kind of glad I have never seen a new born's hoof, I would freak out for sure! Thanks for sharing that too.

squishy!

I used to play with my old geldings feet the first couple of weeks after he was born and it really was squishy...lol. His started toughing up after a few days though and no more squishy.

Freaky wierd! And VERY cool! I've never seen one before. I knew they were soft and squishy to prevent puncturing the uterus, but that is pretty cool.

*snerk* Creature from the black lagoon... AHAHAHH!
