If you had a horse, who had ringbone so bad that you have decided to put him down because he's in so much pain from it.....would you ride him one more time, the day before you have him euthanized?

Maybe only if the vet was there to numb him up. And even then, I would know it was a very selfish indulgence on my part.
If they made the horse comfortable for it, I can understand the desire. I've not seen the horse and the level of lameness or the horse's attitude and desire. Those things matter a lot in judging whether it was a fair request for a last memory, or *not*.

Apparently not......
Today I rode him for the first time since late January and he let me know how much he hurt but he understood I needed to be on his back one more time.

"He understood" is probably wishful thinking. "He did his best to comply" is probably more accurate.

If he was in enough pain to warrant being put down, it would probably take A WHOLE LOT of pain killers to make him comfortable. I would be afraid for my safety to get on a horse that drugged up. My last time with him would just be spent giving him whatever his favorite things were... carrots, candy, alfalfa, scratches - whatever.

Ugh - no pain killers... simply selfish.

No, I wouldn't ride him. The horse probably had no desire to be ridden, the person felt the need to ride.

I agree with the others. While I'd love to, I don't think I could or would even consider doing it because of my horse. If we had shared many rides together in the past, I'd like to think that would be enough for me in that time of sorrow with putting him down.

Sometimes I wish there was a way to make the owner feel what his horse does!
Being dumb is really no excuse to torture animals. ..."understood" - yeah right!

What a selfish owner. That poor horse is in such pain that he needs to be put out of his suffering....how can anyone justify riding that poor creature. He should spend time with his horse and baby....not make him suffer unbearable for his own selfish need for one last ride.

Absolutely not. That is right up there in the category of people who put their pets through chemo and a lot of other treatments to prolong their lives a few more months. There is nothing in it for the animal, it is purely for the owner and its part of their inability to let go. Pure selfishness. And riding a horse in that much pain ranks up there in cruelty for the sake of a human's desires to me.
My old mare didn't get ridden for almost 2 months when she started getting sick and we were trying to figure out the problem before I put her down. She was sick, in pain and almost didn't want to be touched by me or anyone else. I would never, EVER have asked her to bear my weight one more time, we had nine wonderful years for that. The last day, she bore my tears in her mane and on her neck, that was enough for me.

Absolutely not! I can't believe some one could be so stupid, and so selfish.

 I don't understand how someone could justify that ride. I know if it where me I would rather have a last memory of my horse peaceful and enjoying a treat, before falling asleep to gallop over the rainbow bridge. I just don't get it.

NO WAY! :mad:Spending some quality time giving him the things he wants is what I would do. Brushing him, talking with him and giving him his favorite treat.
