Hello all! I'm new here - Piper522 recruited me! She said this place is fantastic. :)

A little about me - my name is Jessica, I'm 21 and I live in central Ohio. I'm currently horseless, but I hope that'll change maybe in the spring....we'll see. It seems like I'm never sitting still, as I work 40hrs a week at one job, pick stalls as another job, and go to school full time!! I'm a psychology major...and hope to someday do some family counseling and hope to also incorporate horses in some way (has anyone read "Tao of Equus"?? It kind of talks about the stuff I'm interested in).

I'm an animal lover and have 2 dogs (one rescued senior....both are Shelties), a cat, and a bunny. I've been riding horses for....oh man, must be 7 or 8 years now. I learned to ride on a Tennessee Walker mare, with a few Western lessons thrown in there, but now I'm riding Paints and doing hunt seat. In 2009 I'll be showing for the first time ever and I'm so excited about that! I'm leasing my friend and trainer's mare, KC, a 12 year old Paint (pic below). I'd love to learn jumping and dressage.....but right now I'm refining my skills and just learning all that I can about the basics of riding and horsemanship. :)

I do have some fears, namely about handling horses from the ground, so be on the look out for questions. Can't wait to get to know everyone!

Yay! Welcome eleveneleven! We're so glad that you joined us.

I have read the Tao of Equus. Interesting book. It is wonderful how they use the horses to help reach people. The parts about channeling ancestral horses were rather far-fetched for me, but who knows? You'll find that a great forumer, SedonaThunder, has a Linda Kohanov quote in her signature.

You came to the right place for advice and socializing. There is a ton of horse expertise on this forum.

Anyway, welcome! It's great to have you here.

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone!

Welcome!! I think you will really like it here. KC is very cute, I bet your excited to start showing!

Thanks!! Yes, I am so excited to start showing. I grew up behind the county fairgrounds in my hometown and the horse arena was literally in my backyard, so I was ALWAYS out there watching the 4Hers do their thing and all the open shows and such. Never got the opportunity to ride as a child because I have a non-horsey family, but now that I'm on my own and older, I'm getting to make up for lost time and do all the things I wanted to then. :)

I forgot to say I owned my own horse for a short amount of time - a Tennessee Walker mare (the horse I basically learned to ride on) named Missy. I leased her for several years when I was in high school, then graduated and had a lot of changes take place in my life, so I stopped riding for several more years. But last spring I called up her owner to catch up and found out Missy was for sale, so I bought her. I had been making payments on her when she started spooking HARD and making me fearful to just lead her. Then, to make matters worse, one day I had her grazing in the round pen while we were waiting on the farrier and she shied, but then refused to put any weight on one of her front legs. She was just hobbling around on 3 legs and it terrified me. That lasted about 10 seconds and then she gave a buck and went back to grazing. I hadn't worked her or anything, and my farrier told me she was sound as a dollar when she got there. A few days later, I had her tied in the barn while I was grooming, again we had done NO work, and she did the same thing, but it was scarier because she'd been tied. Needless to say, I immediately called my vet, who came out and did some general tests (hoof test, flexion test, etc.). He found nothing wrong with her. But that combined with the spooking (she hadn't been touched since I quit leasing her, basically), I decided going ahead with the purchase would have been a bad decision unfortunately, so I put a stop to it halfway through. I miss that mare so much and it was a tough decision, but for the best in the end I think.

My trainer wants to breed the mare I'm leasing now, and she casually mentioned that maybe we can work something out and make the foal mine. Sooooo excited about that even though it's a long way off (we want a 2010 foal).

Hehehe, yes! My first rabbit was a Mini Lop doe. My bunny now is a Holland Lop house bunny named Lucy! I'll attach a pic of her and the rest of my fuzzy children. Lucy is a doll....I love her to bits. :) And I agree, Shelties are amazing dogs. My two girls, Kiera and Katie, are the loves of my life!

My girls....Kiera on the left, Katie (our rescue) on the right. Katie has done a 180 since we got her - we saved her from euthanasia at a rural dog pound in NE Ohio a year ago. She was one solid mat and infested with fleas and lice - she had to be completely shaved down, and she was extremely obese. But her fur has grown back now and she's lost about 10lbs. She's a little arthritic and has hyperthyroid, but she's a totally different dog. :) Sweetest thing you could ever meet.

My Lucy Bunny!

Yeah, the parapsychology type stuff is a little out there and not my thing, but I was so intrigued by her use of horses in helping people triumph over various problems in their lives. I know it helps me - barn time is therapy time, stall cleaning and all!! LOL.

YEAH!!! Welcome Jessica. You know this forum is addicting when I am choosing to be in the den on the computer instead of watching the Ohio State Buckeye vs Penn State game! Ask your questions anytime...it is amazing the wealth of knowledge everyone has! See you at the barn soon!

Hehehe....Of course horses are better than football anyday!! Thanks for telling me about this place! I'm a huge nerd....I love online forums, lol. It's hard to find a friendly, active one! This place seems really nice!
