Help me narrow down all the wonderful scents out there! My hope is that one day my shop will be big enough that I can offer a wide variety of scents but to start off I need to keep it simple and just offer the most popular. So what smellies do you like the most?

Barn/Horse scented candles in a mason jar might be a great idea LMAO!
Seriously, I love food scented stuff- vanilla cupcake is a favorite.

Vanilla, Lavender, and Lilac will be offered as well as a few listed in the above poll.

(I'd love to find a barn/horse scented candle...)

Its hard to pick just one. When I buy candles I usually end up with at least 3 because I can't pick just one. Honeysuckle is one scent I bought last time and boy does it smell good.

Hmm.. I love fresh linen (usually- unless it's overpowering or powdery- ick!)

But then I also LOVE cinnamon and coconut as well. But I went ahead and voted for fresh linen. It's my fave all-around scent. Cinnamon is great in cold weather and coconut for warm. :)

Well shoot - here comes the party pooper... I have what's been coined "multiple chemical sensitivity" and I can't be around most fragrances. The people in my office can't wear perfume, hand lotions or body sprays, if I'm going to a friends house they have to put their candles and air fresheners (especially those plug ins!) away in a drawer, and if I ride in a friends car they have to put the smelly tree in the glove box. It makes me sad as I LOVE yummy smells but my throat starts to hurt, my eyes start to burn and if I stick around for too long I often end up with a sinus infection. I've seen a few doctors and after doing some research I've found that this is becoming more and more common as the world gets filled with things like perfumes, febreeze and fabric softeners that often carry MANY known carcinogens. Did you know that dryer sheets are bad for you?

Anyway, my intent was not to rain on your parade but to suggest possibly having a line of "natural fragrances" - I can be around most therapeutic grade oils... I love lavender, lemon, angelica, cinnamon and others. It would be great if people with this dumb ailment of mine could easily find something that smells nice but doesn't cause pain.

Good luck with your shop!:)

Do you mean like the aromatherapy oils? Does incense do that to you also? Are they called Therapeutic oils?

I am going to offer scentless candles too. :)

Love anything floral,, Honeysuckle gets my vote so does Green Tea, Gardenia, Lavender, and Lilac. Lilly of the Valley is great too. When it is winter time and my gardens are no longer in bloom I love to burn candles that smell of summer time. Helps to lift my gloomy spirits as I am stuck inside for the winter months. I can't wait to see your on line shop and start shopping!

Many (even most - especially if inexpensive) oils deemed "aromatherapy" are full of synthetic ingredients and chemicals. Here are a couple of links that discuss therapeutic grade.

I think it would be cool to find candles that are colored differently then their scents. You know how valilla is always white and apple is always red? Well what if someone loves the smell of apples but their living room is blue or green. Wouldn't it be nice to have a candle with the scent you like in the color you choose?

OK, from a man's point of view here goes. I voted for cinnamon apple which for me like Carla I like better in the cold months. I like most "food" scents and can not stand the flowery smells. When I just see someone smelling a flower I almost gag. Vanilla is good but if you can make anything smell like fresh baking(bread of cookies) that would get my positive attention.

How did you get that to happen at your office? I have the exact same problem. I can only be around fruity type scents. Nothing overly chemical like cologne's and perfumes. But I was told even though I get a reaction (migraines and feel like my throat is going to close up) those people can't be told not to wear that stuff.

There is another woman in the office the same way although her reactions are way worse. Someone thought it would be funny to rub perfume on our phones at one point last year. We made a complaint to the Office Manager and he did nothing. The other woman got really sick from the prank. I only got a migraine.

People that smoke is even worse because I am allergic to that. They walk around and smell like a huge cloud of smoke and it's horrible. I get an instant migraine and sick to my stomach. We've got a guy in my aisle that has started smoking these weird smelling cigars. I went to the Office Manager on Thursday and told him I was starting to get headaches. Didn't seem to care too much.

Remali

Wow really? Almost all the offices I've worked at have a no-scent policy.....no one can wear perfumes or scented lotions, if management even sees scented lotion on anyone's desk, managers remove it. I wonder why they told you people can't be told not to wear them......any office can have that policy, these days quite often it is like a life or death situation if someone gets a severe reaction to scents.....an office that refuses to implement the no-scent rule could possibly be sued if anyone had a bad reaction and the office knew about the employee's allergies.

cheval
08-29-2009, 01:47 PM
I'm thinking maybe the Office Manager is full of it then. He's not talked with anyone up in Headquarters. He says because it's a state building he can't ask people not to wear perfumes - but if other groups can make that request I don't see how he can't.

I'm going to find out more on Monday.

I don't know what it is with some of the women in the office but I think because they can't smell their perfume once they put it on, they don't think anyone else can. If you go into the copy room there is this cloud of perfume that just stays behind. It's nauseating.

Thanks Cheval.....that is an OLD picture of me and Kara, when I got Kara back in, gosh when was it, 1986 or 1987. Way back when.... the good ol' days. :)

Yeah, I'd check into it, with allergies being a serious thing these days, just about every office around here has a policy that states no one can wear perfume, and that even goes as far as scented lotions too. One time someone ignored it and wore a ton of perfume at work, it made one of my co-workers so ill she had to go home.

Barn/Horse scented candles in a mason jar might be a great idea LMAO!
Seriously, I love food scented stuff- vanilla cupcake is a favorite.

I love the idea of a Barn/Horse one. I am so allergic to all the others. If I go in our Hallmark Store to buy cards they have the Yankee Candles set up in there, that smell hits me and my head swells up like a balloon. Same in stores where they sell perfume. Good luck with your store, hope you don't get many allergic ones like me.

I wrote this before I read the other answers. Cheval I'm like you. Our nephew came over one day and smelled so smokey [He didn't smoke in our house but still that smell just hangs on everything] I was getting sick. When they left our couch smelled horrid, I thought we were going to have to put it outside. Thankfully the smell went away after a few hrs. If I just walk into somewhere people have smoked I get sick. I go very few places, if they can't smoke inside they are smoking outside and walking through that bothers me. I don't care if they smoke but I care that I'm allergic to it so I try to avoid places there might be smoke.

My mother in law used to give me potpourri for Christmas and Birthdays etc. I'd have to give it back to her and remind her how allergic I am to it. I told my man I think his mother is trying to kill me. I stopped magazines because of the perfume samples they'd stick in them, I even would subscribe to the scent free ones but they'd always mess up and put the samples in then I couldn't even have them in the house so I just cancelled the subscriptions and told them why.

I don't think they do it anymore but those girls in the malls who would squirt you with perfume, I'd tell them don't even think about it. One girl came to our barn and walked in and said "It smells in here"....IT'S A BARN and I don't smell it at all. I did smell her though, she wore so much perfume it lingered in the air long after she walked through. It didn't smell bad but it made me and my best friend who also owns the barn and is also allergic to about everything on earth like me sick so she had to tell her if she's going to board there she can't wear perfume. People who don't have allergies don't understand. My mother's answer to everything is "Get over it" she can be so ignorant at times. I tell her get over her arthritis, I can't get over my allergies any more than she can get over her arthritis that she complains about non stop. I wish I wasn't like this but I am and there isn't much to do about it. My house could use some good scents but since I'm allergic it smells like a house with animals in it!

dame wolf... I don't know if you have all your supplies, but I can tell you, one fo the big candle makers is right here in AZ. They are called Gold Canyon Candles and I love those candles. Now here is what I hate about them... the prices are WAY too high!

If you could find a way to "clone" their candles, how they burn and smell and the scents they have you would be onto something REALLY big! They don't sell these candles in stores, you can only get them from a distributor (which I used to be)

I'm just giving suggestions here ;) I have bought numerous types and brands of candles, but haven't found any yet that compare to Gold Canyon Candles. It would be nice if someone else can come up with their recipe. ;)

I thought about that but if I'm making the necklaces, windchimes, halters, and wands I'm not sure about having time to make candles too. Plus I'd have to buy everything to make them (molds etc.) I may look into it down the road when I know how time consuming making everything is and how much of it is selling. If candles are the big sellers then I may discontinue one of the above and start making the candles. Cost would be a factor too. That would be cool to have a leather scented candle. I saw candles in mini glass milk jugs yesterday. Thought that was cool.

dame_wolf
08-31-2009, 03:51 PM
Okay, EW got me thinking and I did some research on making candles instead of buying them and cost wise it is better. So my question is would you rather buy a candle in a color you can not choose to get the scent you want or a scented candle in a natural cream color? I checked and a 16 oz colored, scented, soy candle in a mason jar is selling for anywhere between $10-20.00. So if I offered a 16 oz scented soy candle in a mason jar with a colored ribbon of your choice in a natural cream color for like $8-10.00 (have to play with the scenting proceedure, want a good smelling candle!) would you buy it or the colored candle for more?

Also if I took special orders and let you choose the scent and color (you'd have to buy the whole batch-4 candles) for $44.00 would you be interested in that?
