View Full Version : Baby squirrel is NOT doing good.
I am doing all I can, but his demeanor changed almost over night. I stayed up with him all night. I am doing all I can to make him comfortable. Hes not getting any better. He is lifeless, please pray for him.

Aww I am sorry he is not doing good:(. He is so young and small and it is very hard at that age for them to make it.. If he does not make it,, just know that you are doing everything that you can. You gave him TLC and helped him to live a bit longer with you. You both will be in my thoughts tonight.

It's never a good thing to pick up wildlife no matter how well intentioned doing so is. It's hard to just let a baby alone knowing they aren't going to make it, however, that is a whole part of life. It's nature's population control. Plus some mother's will abandon babies that are sickly. And if the animal is sick people risk transferring illness/parasites to themselves and other animals within their house.
We've been getting so many calls for babies this year. And we tell everyone, leave them alone. It is very likely that they might die, however, there is a reason for that.
Most states it is illegal to keep wild animals without a permit. Again, a lot of that has to do with disease issues, but also because trained rehab person knows how to properly care for specific wildlife species.
Sorry for the soap box but people do need to know this.
Yeah, after staying up and feeding him every two hours. Stimulating him to go to the bathroom etc, I can't help but to get attached. I tried not to, but I did. :(
Thanks guys for all the well wishes. I can't help but to feel guilty.
I called vet clinics and rehabilitation centers, most didn't answer. No one would give me answers, and no one would take the baby. All they did was give me damn numbers, so I had to call more numbers. Still no answers, and no one would take him.
Again thanks so much everyone.

Most of them are not set up to take every single small animal and will only focus on does/fawns, and other more specific larger species.
So even they have to tell people to put it back where they found it and let nature take it's course.
It is the worst part of my job and I hate doing it but, the law is there not only to protect the animals but people as well.
I understand.. Its just hard to see a baby and say no.
See my cousin cuts down trees for a living and he finds them. If he doesn't take them off the site they will be killed. He asked me if I could care for it, and I couldn't say no.
I've had one before and raised him fine. But this little guy is just having a hard time..
I hate to see him so weak and lifeless, I am doing all I can.

It is very hard, but it has to be done.
There's no way to know if it's sick. And you certainly don't want to get sick yourself or any other pets if you have them. When I tell people this, they say some pretty hateful things about me hating animals. It's hard to leave a baby out there knowing it will die, but sometimes that death/illness is prolonged because most people do not know how to adequately care for them.
And actually if you had someone that wanted to get you into trouble (we get a lot of people turning in their neighbors for this sort of thing) they can and often do cite people for keeping wildlife. Even if it's a squirrel or a rabbit or coyote pup (lot of the pups getting taken around here this year).
I just wanted to bring it up, not only for your benefit but for anyone else that may be reading the site.

I hope he pulls thru..... I would have done the same thing tho, I know of the laws and how we shouldn't take in wildlife, but then I couldn't leave an animal to suffer or die tho.....it's tough. Too bad the wildlife rehab people were of no help, we have a pretty good place near here that always takes in any animals.

I'm so sorry!! It's been a long time but I know what you are going through. I know I told you before how hard they are to raise but I was so hopping to be wrong!!! I'll be thinking of you and your baby!
Thanks so much guys, not much of a change in the baby. All though he is moving a little more. I thought I was going to loose him last night, but here we are another night. He is a fighter..

I know absolutely zilch about baby squirrels but I'm hoping for the best and sending prayers and reiki. Kim Cassidy, someone from the old forum, is also raising a baby squirrel and she may have some advice, pointers or something to say that might help. You can email her at Kim@clickandtrim.com - she's very nice and I'm sure will try to help if she can.

I can see Cheval's point. The dog used to catch baby bunnies and we'd catch him with a bunny in his mouth. Every single time we tried to save the bunny it would die anyway. If you were cutting trees wouldn't there be a chance that the mother would be around? I tend to take the negative side as well because I was never able to keep a wild youngster alive - Kudos for doing it once!

So how's the little one doing tonight?
Thanks so much guys for all the well wishes, prayers sites and emails. I really appreciate it.
MW- I didn't cut down the trees, I don't even know where he works. Or his job site, so I have no way of knowing where the mother is. She most likely got scared and ran with all the noises. He brought the squirrel to HIS HOUSE, late at night. Then he called me, he said he had a baby that needed food and to be warmed. He knew I had no trouble with my last one. So I went to his house and took the baby squirrel. I wasn't going to say no to helping a baby, I'm sorry. Maybe some of you can let nature take its course, but I am not you. I will continue to help wild life if I see it can't care for it self.
So know, as for how the baby is doing. :)
He has made a huge turn around from when he was feeling bad. He is wiggleing around, eating great. Going to the bathroom. He just seems like he feels much much better. I can't say he will be ok, but one thing is for sure he wants to be here. And as long as he fights I will to.

I understand where many are coming from regarding letting nature take its course and also in not handling wildlife for safety concerns - but I can't help but wonder how much worse off we'd be if way back when people all bowed down to those same restrictions on animals that are now near and dear to us. No horses? Dogs? Cats? This is more of a philosophical thing - but I can picture a day in our not-so-distant future where the only animals that survive our particular use of the planet are the ones we are able to at least semi-domesticate and that can adapt with us... just a thought :)
Thanks EW, I will. :)
42many I agree! Very well said.

I beg to differ on animals not surviving changes. Many species that used to be strictly forest animals now thrive in prairie habitat as well and vice versa. Wild animals have an incredible way of adapting to their environment. They adapt much better than humans.
I really hate to say this but I am going to anyway. I know Vibe has worked hard to try to rehab this squirrel so this is a generalization and nothing specific against Vibe but, sometimes the stress of trying to rehab an animal that doesn't necessarily have a happy ending is much tougher on the critter than what nature would have been.
I commend Vibe for taking on this task. If the laws there are the same as here I can't condone the actions because they are illegal. I do hope this story has a happy ending for all parties involved. I'll get off my soapbox now. Good luck Vibe.

That's exactly what I was trying to get across only you said it better.
There is a reason why only people who are trained to rehab should be handling and working with any animal that is sick/abandoned or injured.

Hey Vibe - how is baby squirrel? Hope he's doing well! Kim posted a video of hers and I thought you'd like it... it was just a tiny little thing like yours when she started caring for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQ2QYpCXtnw

the video was cute! i'm so glad yours is doing well.
i know it's against the law, but i have recsued and released a lot of animals and none of them suffered. i think if the person is responsible it's worth it. i cannot watch animal suffer and wallk away.
