View Full Version : The Politcal Section

How do people feel about the political section? Do we need such a section on a horse forum? Maybe it could a group instead of a section so that the threads didn't post in the "new threads" sidebar.

I just want it at the bottom. I don't care to argue daily, it's not my personality. They have that saying don't talk about politics among friends for a reason. I don't mind it being discussed by people who are willing and who go there willingly but I feel drug in there at times, and I'm perfectly happy to ignore the area the best I can. And it works for the most part, but some days. . .

WB posted elsewhere that it's easy to ignore. But how can you really ignore it if the threads show up as new threads in the sidebar?

For now I'll just listen.

I know you enjoy it WBay and I don't blame you for that. It's not a hateful place towards you in there. But it's foolish for someone to post somewhere and not get anything out of it. Which is why I stopped. The only thing I've ever taken out of there is an admiration for the diplomacy of JackieB.

I don't mind it where it is at. I usually just ignore it and do not get involved. But if I am having one of my moods, I might post something in there. I think I have posted a total of 3 times in that section since the forum started. ;)
It's a forum of people, with a common connection through horses, not strictly a horse forum. I like the current events and politics section the way it is, and think it's weird that anyone would want to be shielded from the mere sight of it.

I think WB had a good point, that without it political issue threads will just be showing up all throughout the forum. It'll be messier and for you, I'm guessing, even more annoying.

Maybe I am just really inefficient when it comes to using the forum but I never look at the new threads. I have a set habit/pattern of how I look through things and it doesn't include the new threads. It's kind of like how I read the newspaper. I can read the whole paper and not tell you what one ad is in it. I just ignore them.
As Ragnar said without the section those posts would end up everywhere. The way it is now works fine for me. I seldom post in the political section like CG mentioned but I do go read it now and then when the rest of the forum is slow.

I personally like how it is now; however, don't use new posts section either. Keeps it condensed for those that are interested.

I agree. If I want to visit I visit, if not I don't. It's easy to ignore for me if I want to.

Awwww, for that reason alone, I think we need to keep it in some form. :hysterical:
Seriously, thanks for your kind words, E_W. Right back atcha!
I'm fine with it staying the way it is now. If I'm not in the mood to try to help Ragnar along from his present position as the Scarecrow in the Wizard of OZ (Bwahahaha :hysterical:), then I just don't click on the post.
Seriously again, as long as the thread is properly labeled as being "Current Events and Politics", I think it's fine the way it is. It's up to me to control my emotions and not raise my blood pressure unnecessarily. :)

I don't think it's a big deal leaving it right where it is. A person can choose to go there, or not. Usually for me, it's not. However, there have been a few times I've posted or at least read some threads in there that are interesting. I kind of like the idea of leaving the sections threads in the sidebar along with the rest. That way, a person can decide if they want to check something out or not, as they choose.
Something to think about- if we get to the point that we feel we need to segregate that section, what will our forum have become?

Well, my thoughts are these:
Eliminating it would only lead to political-type posts being put in the GD section, like NHR on horse.com, or the new and inexplicable "debate" subforum over there.
Putting all political debate in a "group" is not workable. I have no idea what goes on in groups, and most here don't either, I imagine. I still haven't really figured out what groups are good for. Certainly not for encouraging free and open discussion.
And free and open discussion of politics is the goal. If you do not wish to participate, don't. If you do wish to participate, know that the debate is free and open there. I will NOT make sure both sides of the debate are equally argued, equal representation of your point of view is up to you and you alone. Same for me. I can only guarantee you will all have the exact same tools to work with that everyone else has. You all have a reply button on each and every post. If you see someone say something you think is rude, wrong, exaggerated, extreme or otherwise faulty... Call them on it! If you believe something, say it! But be prepared for a debate if you do. It's what the forum is FOR, to debate the politics of the day.

I enjoy the political and current events section. Sometimes I read of things that I otherwise don't hear of and it gets me doing my own research, if it's something I find relevant or interesting.

I can ignore the sidebar or maybe just close it???

I don't think we need a BWF Fairness Doctrine

LOL... Scarecrow, huh? I guess I figured myself more as the Tin Man. But hey...
I'm in the "leave it where it is" camp.
Arrow: I'd like to see you posting more in there. Spirited debate is more interesting and fun with people you disagree with, as compared to an echo chamber where everybody agrees. I would encourage you to try to find the fun in it, rather than anger, and join in and spar along with everybody else. ...rather than try to shut it down. It's good, clean fun! :)

Leave it as it is.
Its wb's forum so quit griping about it.If you don't like it leave.
Nobody is forcing you to read the threads in the political forum.

Um, is this thread the reason the "new thread" sidebar is gone? Or just part of the move? Because I miss it :( . I think it's just silly to be upset about having to see new threads. If you simply can't refrain from reading everytime you see a new political thread, even though it upsets you, then maybe you have bigger issues than a new thread sidebar. No offense to anyone, this just seems entirely too silly for an actual discussion. Maybe I'm missing some big important point? It is 3am here.....

leave it alone. jackieB often makes sense and I have to rethink and research the issues.
and while I am neither Wicken nor christian I rather believe the tenets - do as you will, but harm no one- and - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I should also mention that i is not a matter of "what shell we do about it?" you have choice, You may choose to ignore it, you may not decide what I do with it.

I think you should leave it as it is. I have to say, IRL I can be a bit of a political junkie. I'm pretty passionate (an informed) about my views. That said, I really don't participate there. I come here for the horse parts and don't like to mix politics with that too much. I don't find the debate section hard to ignore. I don't use the sidebar and so don't see what's going on there unless I purposely go there which isn't too often.
