I have a trip to southern Colorado coming up quickly. We leave early Saturday 9/12. Our trip got bumped up a day.

We will be bow hunting for elk in the west elk wilderness. It will be our first time in this area and I'm a bit nervous about what we'll run into. We are expecting a lot of people and plan to back pack at least 4 miles from the trailhead and set up a spike camp and then hunt further in from there. There will be 7 of us and we'll split up and camp in twos or threes.

Vick, I'll do my best to get you a big elk steak. How's that sound? If that doesn't work for you I'll hunt up some brownies! :)

I'll most likely be online through Thursday.

I suppose we will give you a LOA. I myself would rather go riding but each their own. :) I hope you have fun and be safe. Catch a big one and I will pass on the meat. Are you all staying in a tent?

We set up a base camp as far as we can drive usually at a trailhead. That amounts to a 10 X 20 wall tent. When we pack a camp in on our backs we each carry our own small tent and everything you need for yourself you carry. We usually find a water source and and filter/pump/treat our water so we don't have to carry more than a days supply at a time.

Everyone has their own idea of what "comfort" is at a spike camp. Clean clothes can be a luxury. :)

I forgot my camera last year and the only pics I got of my first bull elk were taken with my phone. The dumbest part is that it is on my packing list too! It's on there twice this year. :)

Listen to the little fireball! I know to watch out for you without any warning and for no reason at all. :)

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.

Petra I cringe whenever I think of your injuries. After having surgery on both wrists this spring I feel your pain and frustration.

Yep, that foot work of yours is pretty impressive. I was off work for a while and the internet was my friend then too! I could type with just a little pain. There were many things that hurt a lot but I'm stubborn enough not to ask for help for some of it and not willing to allow other stuff if at all possible. :)

i know what you're talking about. i'm lucky to have an awesome husband to take care of me. i would probably opt for pain and do at least the most personal stuff by myself if i could. the stupid casts go past my elbows, it makes things impossible. i also have to be extremely careful not to mess up the bones in my right wrist - the doctor said that hopefully the pieces will stay arranged, if they fall i will need a surgery - i really don't want that.
i'm glad you managed to do at least some things by yourself.
sorry to change the subject of your thread.
this is supposed to be about your hunting trip in colorado. i hope you'll get some impressive elk. are you going to send it to taxidermist and mount it on your wall?
i can't wait to see the pictures. :)

I am so jealous......I would love to go do something like that.....well, I doubt I could shoot anything.... but I sure would enjoy going along for the ride and the scenery! :)

I love the scenery too! Hunting and actually bagging some game is frosting on the cake. There will probably not be any horse riding this year but I know I will be longing for a horse after a few days of a few miles walking each day.

Ranger, good luck with your hunt. My man is currently hunting in the Weminuche Wilderness; I don't know if he's familiar with the West Elk Wilderness.

I think his hunting is mostly an excuse to live in the wilderness for a few weeks (months, actually!). But once in awhile he actually shoots something.

I'm so jealous of him. I wish I lived closer and could spend more time in the mountains myself. Once a year for 10-14 days is nice but a month or more multiple times is only a dream. :)
