Alright, I have officially chosen a name for my shop! Spotted Horse Trading Post has been a dream of mine for a very long time and one that I thought I'd never see happen. I am opening up this thread to post updates, changes, set backs (I'm sure there will be several more) or just to bounce ideas off the forum family. To start it off I will try and submit the rough draft of my business cards!

Okay I will have to figure another way to get the cards on here. They are to big to attach... I'll take a pic with the camera when I get home and post that way!

Make sure you show us samples of what you're planning to sell to. We can help you pick stuff that is appealing to lots of different people.

Good luck and I can't wait to see the cards. Will it be horse stuff or other?

It will be both. The current plan is I am gonna sell the beaded 'necklaces' that I have made for Koda and some friends horses, handmade candles, incense, handmade windchimes, herbal remedy books, journals, lavender wands & bags, some of the scenic pictures I've taken, and I want to show case used tack sold on commission. If J can get a supply of amethyst from his dad then depending on what we get (big geods or little pieces) I will sell that too.

Okay the business cards are just not working on here so I have attached the draft without picture. In the blank area to the left is where the pictures will go. I plan to print them out at home so on a sheet of 10 cards there will be a different picture on each card.

Thanks!

J thinks I should do all the cards the same (just one picture like #4) and if I was paying someone to print them for me I could see that, bulk pricing and all. But where I am printing these myself I figured I could have a little fun and make them different! The overall look is the same just different pics of Koda.

I like your idea. I always do things a little different. By the way, Koda is one beautiful horse. And the name fits him, I mean Spotted Horse Trading Post.

I'm looking forward to your merchandise. It sounds like you will be carrying some fun items that would be great gifts for other horsey people.

dame_wolf
09-10-2009, 10:13 AM
Thanks Tates! The card is still the rough draft, not really happy with some of the wording like horse necklace. People are gonna think they are necklaces with horses on them for people to wear and they are most def not! Maybe Equine Beads. Then they might think they are horse shaped beads. I don't know...

After the cards, then you go to buildasign.com and you make yourself one of these for the side of your car. Then you can use your car for advertising and believe you can right off a bit of your car expenses because of it. ;)

I was actually thinking of bumperstickers and sending one out with every new order. If people put them on their cars (and some do) that would be advertising.

BTW I love both signs! I think the second one would work better for on a truck door. Keep it up and I'll have to give you a discount! Wanna have a go at the bumperstickers? hahaha!

Have you seen the things that look like a small keychain? You clip them to the side of a bridle or sometimes on the D-ring of the cinch or the side of the saddle?? They are just little fanciness to add to your tack. Sometimes they are made of horsehair, beads, or crystals. I love those.

That would be cool.

Got an idea for windchimes, just need to iron it out. Gonna use a horse shoe and shoe nails! If rasps weren't so expensive I would use one of those for the center piece the nails clink on but I'll think of something to use.

If they aren't expensive I'm gonna send them out free with either new orders or to repeat customers. Maybe with both! Get 2 different ones made and send one with new orders and then the other after they have placed like 5 orders. What ya think?

Well that company in Oregon has put J off for another 15 days :(, he's supposed to call again on the 1st. This is really getting depressing. So beings that they keep putting us off I have decided to go ahead and register in Idaho, get my domain name and start making stuff.

What do you think of the bumper sticker and truck door sign? Think I kinda like the green better then the red.

Just bought a bunch of supplies for the Rhythm Beads. Gonna buy the starter kit for the candles and get practicing on them before I buy a bunch of supplies for that too.

Thinking about making some little strings of Rhythm Beads to be tied into the horses mane and go with the necklaces. Do you think I should buy some kind of clasp or just leave enough leather to tie it? If I don't buy clasps it will keep the cost down both for me and the buyer but after a while the leather could get brittle and break.

dame_wolf
09-16-2009, 10:32 AM
Just found some really well priced clips so I got them. Another dilema down. lol!

dame_wolf
09-17-2009, 04:35 AM
Here is what I am thinking of offering for the Rhythm Beads.

~ Standard beaded necklace (comes with 2 bells) $10
~ Standard beaded necklace with pendant/charm $15
~ Standard beaded necklace with amethyst pendant (from Uruguay) $20
~ Matching beaded mane clip (comes with 1 bell) $5
~ Matching beaded choker $5
~ Matching beaded choker with pendant/charm $10
~ Matching beaded choker with amethyst pendant $15
~ Hunting season necklace (comes with 4 bells) $15
~ Non-Standard necklaces (tassels, excessive bells or pendants/charms, etc.) $15+
~ Non-Standard matching choker $10+

Prices are all for a standard horse size and do not include shipping. Draft, Pony, or Mini would be special orders and prices changed accordingly. Did some research and these prices are very competitive (low to average). The amethyst was actually brought here from Uruguay by J's dad and the pendants we will be using are selling on ebay for $12+ so pricing them here for $10 seems very reasonable. What do you think?

Don't know if it matters but I bought the liberty bell style bells. All I was seeing when 'checking out the competition' :p was tiny sleigh bells on the necklaces so the liberty bells will be different and they are 1.5 inches so they are large and should throw some good sound.

TheRedHayflinger

DW, are you going to make the Rhythm Beads basic designs? Or colors to order?

dame_wolf
09-19-2009, 08:14 PM
I got several different colors and so I'm thinking of doing some standard designs, either white and/or black and then another color of their choice. Then I will do some other more intricate designs. If you are wanting specific colors let me know and I'll do a custom one for you. Just let me know!

valleyrider
09-19-2009, 09:15 PM
I am not sure what colors I want.. maybe blues or purple. Both my horses are boys. Just something that would look good with their color. Cloud is white and cream and Bones is a red roan.Once you make a few post them so I can see your ideas..

I am not sure what colors I want.. maybe blues or purple. Both my horses are boys. Just something that would look good with their color. Cloud is white and cream and Bones is a red roan.Once you make a few post them so I can see your ideas..

What I was doing when I made them for me and friends is make them to match the horses tack. Like all my tack is black, red, and blue (and leather of course). Friends tack was black, red and green, anothers kind of an orange, red and black. So those are the colors I used, red, black, and white as the base and then we each had our unique color to make us a little different when we rode together and match our different tack.

So what color is your tack? Each horses blanket? Their halters and leads? If the colors are the same then I will do what I did before and give it a base color/design and then give them their spot of uniqueness so they match but are different or I can do 2 different designes. Let me know (we look really snappy with the same design but just slightly different in colors when we ride together, people always ask if we are in a club or something). You've had a long standing order here so yours will be the first 2 I make.

Do you want pendant(s)? Tassles? Or just the standard? The break down is on post 49.

DW I like the idea of the same disign with different colors to match the horses.. But I also want the beads to look good on the horse's color. Here is a picture of Bones so you can see his color as well as his tack
http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=13&pictureid=131
here is a close up of his bridle and you can see his color
http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=13&pictureid=471
Cloud's bridle is about the same but Hubby's saddle is darker. I do not have a good picture in my album of his tack. Hubby Likes blue, Cloud halter is blue and his blanket has blue.

09-21-2009, 10:58 PM
Okay so if I did Black, White, and Red for Bones and White, Dark Blue (or Black) and Light Blue for Cloud? If you want them real alike then I'd do them both with Black and White beads and then the one different color. Do you want tassles and pendants too or just the standard?

dame_wolf
09-22-2009, 02:18 PM
I think Green would look good on Bones but wouldn't match his tack color. Blue is def Clouds color.

dame_wolf
09-23-2009, 02:17 PM
This is unbelievable! I'm still waiting on half the beads, all the bells and clips! The payment has been taken from my bank but I've heard nothing on the shipments. Emailed the companies about it and haven't heard back from them. Placed the orders on the 14th and had half the beads and the leather in just a couple of days. I hope they hurry up cause I want to get to work!

valleyrider
09-23-2009, 09:30 PM
Oh DW, I hope the rest of the order comes in soon.. Maybe there is a # you can call?? Can you post a picture of the bells, tassels and pendants that you have? I would like to see them to pick what I might want.. I think a deep purple like the (dragon horse), or a navy would look good on Bones. Do you have those colors? Can you post a picture of the rhythm beads so I can see the design you are making?

dame_wolf
09-24-2009, 12:40 PM
The bells I ordered are the Liberty Bell style, tassles at the moment are going to just be beaded, and pendants I have on hand some crosses, angel wings, and leaves but since I am 'special ordering' yours I figured I'd get some ideas from you and then go to the craft store. Like if you want a stone (I have an obsidian on Koda's) then I'd go get one. I'm going to be at the craft store this weekend so I'll see what else they have and give you a better idea of what I can put on.

dame_wolf
09-24-2009, 12:44 PM
Oh I almost forgot, I have metalic colors too! Like metalic purple and metalic blue that would really stand out against the normal black and white beads. Just got the other bead shipment in so just waiting on the bells and clips now (fingers crossed for today). I will take pictures of the bead colors and post them on here so you can pick your colors. I will also string some beads so you can see the patterns I've come up with. They wont be the full necklace but it will show you the patterns and how some of the colors will work together.

OOOh goody the pictures are here! Oh My I can't make you my mind what pattern I think would look good on each horse:doh: I don't like the Metalic, too girlish for the boys.. I do want the blues for cloud and I guess the purple for Bones??? or should I do both boys in the blue but use more of the darker blue for Bones. I do like pattern 3... I like the silver bell cause there is silver on their bridles. I do like the idea of a stone. I do not think Hubby would go for any charms on his boy..he says boys don't wear charms:rolleyes:
Thanks Remali

I tell you that pattern #7 is difficult to keep straight! I think that one will be offered in the $15+ range as it was hard enough keeping it straight with that little sample string! I'll practice with it and see if it gets easier or will always be difficult.

Pattern #3 is almost the same pattern that I used on my friends horses. I can do Clouds in light blue and Bones in dark blue or purple, either will look good on him so I guess it just depends on your preference. If you do purple I'll see if I can find you an amethyst stone (we haven't gotten the shippment from J's dad yet, he's still sorting it out and boxing up). I can see about a bone pendant for Cloud if your husband would like that or an obsidian like Koda has (very manly!).

Do you have pictures of what the finishes product will look like? Or did I miss it? Just curious. :)

dame_wolf

I did some pattern samples on post #69 but have not made any finished products yet, haven't had the time but I'm hoping to do some this weekend (just got the rest of my order yesterday). I plan on doing one of every pattern so there will be a finished product for people to see and then letting them choose what colors are used. I'll then make the necklace per order and send them out.

Once I get the finished products done I will create a thread in the flea market to show them and this one will prob move on to the wind chimes or candles, whichever I tackle next.

ETA: I also decided to get some of the sleigh bells so I will have 2 different styles, Liberty and Sleigh.

You should also advertise that they would be excellent accessories for riders who ride up in the mountains, you know, where there are bears. They could be horsey bear bells.

What do the Sleigh bells look like?? I like the pattern on SWMS beads too. That would look good on Cloud. But in the light blue. Hubby should like a manly stone. What does the bone look like? Can you post a picture of the obsidian stone and the others when you get them?

Wrote this up for selling the Rhythm Beads online. What do you think?

Rhythm Beads, often referred to as horse necklaces, are beautiful beaded equine necklaces that have many uses. Originally, Native Americans would adorn their horses with beads, feathers, bells and other ‘decorations’ believing it protected horse and rider from danger. What it also did was to bring horse and rider into balance or rhythm with each other so they moved as one.

Today Rhythm Beads perform much the same service as they did for riders in the past. Not only will Rhythm Beads make your horse stand out in a crowd or bring some flash in a parade or show, but the steady jingle of bells have proven helpful to riders that find it difficult finding their rhythm and often help the horse move in a more consistent gait. Horses that are easily spooked find the sound of bells soothing as they eliminate outside distractions that could startle your horse. These wonderful equine necklaces can also be invaluable in desensitizing young horses as well as keeping their minds on their movement while in training. ‘Speed Beads’ are a less dressy form of Rhythm Beads known in the world of barrel racing and other speed events. Rhythm Beads have also become popular in endurance racing for their ability to keep horses calm and focused over the long distances.

I personally recommend Rhythm Beads for all trail riders, from novice to the most experienced of riders. The music of bells warns any wild life of your presence and gives them the opportunity to move away before startling your horse with sudden movements. They warn others sharing the trail of your approach and allow them to collect their dogs, make room on the trail, etc., making everyone’s trail experience more enjoyable.

Our Rhythm Beads are hand made at the time of order and are created with the safety of your horse in mind. We use a high quality leather cord, colorful pony beads, and silver and gold bells plus offer an assortment of pendants to make your equine necklace unique and safe. All necklaces come with a clip attachment for easy release that can also be clipped to your horse’s mane so when going down hill or taking a drink the necklace stays in place. Should the necklace become caught or entangled the leather cord will break and your horse will be freed. Although beautiful, these equine necklaces are not ment to be worn in the stall or pasture or left on your horse unattended and we are not responsible for any loss or injure that may occur from the use of Rhythm Beads.

So whether a high level eventing horse or your child’s yard pony everyone can experience the benefits of their very own set of Rhythm Beads. Get yours today!

Probably but unless I choose not to sell on e-bay I don't know what to do. That person calls themselves Spottedhorse3. I didn't find them on there till after I started the proceedure to be The Spotted Horse Trading Post. I guess I could go and change my name before I get to far along. It isn't to late but I like the name. Could make J happy and be Horsehaven Trading Post (the name he chose).

So it has occured to me how many of us have loved and lost horses over the years. Mine was a beautiful 25 yr old sorrel QH stallion that wasn't even mine but I begged my parents to buy him for me when he went to auction. He was the calmest, kindest horse I've ever known and I would have given anything to have given that old boy all the love I could have for the last years of his life. I don't even have a photo of him but he lives in my memory.

Anyway, I have decided on what to offer next at the S.P.T.P. and it is DVD compilations of your horse's pics and videos! I have one made up of Koda, all the pics and videos I've taken with him over the last couple of years and while I know if I ever had to sell him or when his time comes to cross the Rainbow Bridge (many years from now, fingers crossed/knock on wood) it will be hard to watch, but I will cherish the pics and memories. SO... I am trying to figure out the easiest way of doing this. I have the DVD's and the computer program but getting the pics is the hard part. I guess the easiest would be to have them set up a Photobucket account with the pics and videos they want used and then give me access. What do you suggest? Also, what would you pay for a DVD video of your horse? I know what I would pay and I think you can get DVD's made from Walmart for $10.00 so I was thinking $7.00 per disc plus shipping? Need some input! Thanks!

dame_wolf
11-02-2009, 05:16 PM
Okay! Well I think a price of $7.00 per disc plus shipping may be to reasonable! lol! This is what I found in my first search for prices.

The music is where there would be difficulty. I know that if you buy a song you can use it anyway you want personally but you can't sell it and I'm pretty sure they would consider this selling it. So I would need to get permission to use certain songs or have the customer provide the music from thier own music library but I don't know how that would work...

No one has any comments on the Memory DVDs idea? I figured out why the other companies were so expensive (kind of...). It's because of the music but if the customer provides their own music or I purchase a downloaded one in their name (like a company I found today does) then I can still offer the DVDs for way less then my competetors do.

Is there no one on the forum that would be interested in this?

valleyrider
11-03-2009, 07:19 PM
Glad you like them DW, I do have some other pictures of Cloud but I am having trouble loading them here for some reason. I was cracking up while I took the pictures of the both of them. Bones was sniffing his beads and then tried to eat them! I am not sure what the Memory DVDs is all about?? The price is kinda high for me.

dame_wolf
11-03-2009, 10:34 PM
A Memory DVD is a DVD of your horse pictures and videos set to music. I did some searching online and most places are starting at $70-$100 and that is only for 50 pictures, about a 4 minute DVD! Now I thought that was high. I'm not sure why it would need to be that high. It's not time, I did Koda's in about 2 hours and that was a full disc. I know that paying for the use of the music would be a factor but the place that started at $70 has the customer provide their own music (mail in the origional CD and then they mail it back with the DVD).
