this is so embarrasing, but funny too, so here goes~ two of the friends I ride with each have black horses. Sara has Midnight, with a star, Kathryn has Casady, with a star/little stripe. Kathryn & I arrived first, & went out to pasture to get our horses. our 2 usually eat near each other. I got Cody, Kathryn got the black horse next to Cody, who we assumed was Casady. we were deep in conversation. we got to the tack shed & started grooming. Kathryn said "Casady's acting funny, he keeps swinging his head around & pinning his ears". we thought maybe he's hurt, so I went over, we felt over his chest, and sure enough, he kept swinging his head around, pinning his ears, acting up. so we untied him, and figured he's too sore to ride. then Sara shows up (who owns the other black horse, Midnight) we call her over to get her opinion on Casady being hurt. she came over, looked him over a minute then says "thats not Casady! that's Midnight! thanks for bringing her in & grooming her!"

bad thing about solid horses with no marks. lol the college i went to bred horses and they all looked a like. all solid chestnuts with no markings. only a few had white on their faces or legs. each student was assigned a horse and everyday we would have to sort through a dry lot with all the horses and use cuts or brands or anything we could to find out horse. i was lucky i got the odd balls each semester. but i know the feeling.

Lol, that's pretty funny. I was always afraid I get my two light colored horses confused at night in the dark but lucky for me one of them is REALLY lazy so if I ever haltered the wrong one I knew immediately.

And that's just another reason I love my Paints! :p ;) lol I did work at an arab farm for awhile - all chesnuts & little markings. It took some time to figure them out & I never did get them all memorized lol.
Good story - thanks for sharing!

Oh, that is funny. I remember when I worked at the dressage barn I brought in the wrong Friesian one time. I was telling them apart by their blankets and they switched the blankets on me. The bad thing is the two friesians were gelding/mare, so that should have given me a clue... I didn't notice until I had completely groomed the horse. I was ready to tack her up and the other groom said, "Why is Marjorie in here?" I had to reblanket, return Marj to the pasture, catch Njolke, take his blanket off, groom him and get him tacked before the trainer needed him. The whole time my face was red enough to have caught fire.
So, needless to say I wouldn't feel too bad. It happens to us all. :D

HeHe, I can sympathise! My trainer has two red roans(mother and son)they look almost identical(my dad can't tell the difference). the best way to tell is by the head, so I went to go catch one of them and they both had flymasks on. It took me awhile to figure it out which one was the one I wanted:D

I can see myself doing that too. At the rescue I volunteered at I went out to get Reggie. There were 3 that looked like him out there. I just called his name and when one of them started towards me, I grabbed that one. Luckily for me, it was the right one.

That's funny and I know the feeling. Our mare is black with some white on her face. Our barn owner's son's gelding is black with white some white on his face. He's bigger but otherwise they could be twins. More than once if he's been in the arena I will walk in and think it's her since normally he's in his stall or outside and she might be in the arena when I get there if they brought her in for me. One day I went in the round pen and hugged "Her" telling her what a good and pretty girl she is then looked and realized it wasn't her it was him!!!! Thankfully he probably wondered "Why is this crazy lady hugging me?" and took pity on me thinking I'm crazy because normally he doesn't do hugs, when he's in his stall he usually pins his ears back if anyone even looks at him.
A friend of mine was at the stable one day and she had never met my girl who was turned out in an uppper pasture and so was the gelding. I said to her "That black horse there might or might not be mine" I explained they looked like twins except for the size and from far away it's hard to tell. Pretty sad when I don't know my own horse. I mean I do if I pay close attention since her white is shaped different but when you expect one to be one place and don't look real good mistakes happen! My poor baby will get a complex thinking her mother doesn't know her! She does have a much better personality than him though.

Midnight was more than happy to come in & get treats, but the longer she was with us, the more she tried to tell us she was NOT Casady. I am sure she felt like she was surrounded by idiots!
and Midnight is a girl, while Casady is a boy....Kathryn probably would have noticed the missing body part once she started brushing his belly...where did it go???
I have a feeling we'll be getting teased about this one for awhile!
