View Full Version : Why this low-paid cowboy is a "conservative"

First a disclaimer: I am the sole Replublican voter in my extended family.

As a kid, my father repeatedly told us that "only rich people can be Republicans." According to his view, the "poor" HAVE to be Democrats. Makes sense when you understand his history.....

This is a man with a measured, genius IQ. Yet, after leaving the military as a Chinese AND German linguist in the 1970s, never worked for more than $8.00 ever since. He married my ex-stepmother in the eighties. She had two kids. And worked, and spent her money on drugs, so was on food stamps. When they got married, and she got pregnant again, he was making $7.00 and hour, in 1990. They went on every form of assistance they could get on. They stayed on it through her attending nursing school in the mid-nineties. They stayed on it after she started making $25.00 an hour as an RN in the late nineties. She's still on assistance, after their divorce, and her remarriage.

So, yeah, a guy that smart, who's that lazy, he wants all the handouts he can get. (I love my dad, don't get me wrong, but let's call a spade a spade!)

I went in the service right out of high school, under the Clinton administration. I saw my army torn apart with enforced downsizing, and that started my doubts. Then I got out and started a business. I had to pay almost half my gross into taxes, even though it was a one man sole proprietorship, with lots of overhead, and no employees. My first year, I GROSSED right around $85,000. After taxes (even with every deduction I could wrangle out of my accountant!), and rent and purchasing equipment, I netted just under $15,000. I did not go to the doctor one time that year. I didn't go to the dentist. I didn't do much besides survive.

Instead, because I lived in a very liberal Left Coast State, I paid for the medical and dental care of an awful lot of homeless and "poor" unemployed people that I didn't even know....

Why is it that the government should be able to tell me I HAVE to pay for your child's medical care? Why is that I HAVE to make sure your child eats? Because I worked an average of 85 hours a week? Last time I checked, every major religion in the world says that if you're gonna have kids, YOU should be supporting them. If I choose to offer assistance to the less fortunate, that's wonderful and noble, and MY CHOICE.

The government TAKING my money to give to someone who didn't work to earn it is immoral. It leads to one of the seven deadly sins, SLOTH!

"Spreading the wealth" is, in classical political philosophy terms also known as "forced redistribution of wealth." That means the government TAKES my money, at the barrel of a metaphorical gun, to give to someone else. That's theft by any definition. It's also called socialism and communism. I seem to remember growing up in the midst of a "cold war" to defeat those evils in the world.....

I don't care if you agree with my views on guns, or abortion, or the War on Terror, or anything else....but how many people are in favor of theft? Robin Hood didn't "take from the rich and give to the poor." He took back money from the Sheriff's coffers and gave it to back to the overtaxed working class. Robin Hood was a conservative.

My dad was/is wrong. Only people that are opposed to theft and communism are Republicans.

;)And remember...friends don't let friends vote Democrat!:p

Well.....my entire family are Dems, they still think that FDR was the greatest thing that ever happened to the Country. I'm still a registered Dem. That being said the last Dem I voted for was Jimmy Carter, the first time. That was my wake up call. I said to myself "self" its about time you started THINKING for yourself, instead of letting some political party do it for you. Actually the older I get the more I find myself leaning toward the Libertarian side of things. But I'm still realistic enough to know that voting that way is usually just in protest. Kinda like the gay thing in the other thread. Now that both my parents have passed maybe its time for me to come out & register Republican.

Cowpuncher, excellent view on reality!!! I am so sick and tired of seeing the hard earned tax dollars of honest hard working people go to support those who constantly make wrong life decisions and have no incentive to change because they know they can get a free ride. I think the "gimme" segment of our society is growing far faster than the "work hard and make ends meet" segment. Why worry about a job and working hard when all I have to do is stand in a line for a bit and sign up. It's getting to the point that there are fewer and fewer workers supporting more and more free loaders. That's what socialism does, it take the incentive out of those who would normally work. Why should I kill myself working so that person can take what I have is the new attitude. If a person capable of working is not working because they can get free dollars, why work. Take the free stuff away and they will either go to work or starve. It's their choice.

I'm not saying that there aren't those out there who need a helping hand, there are. But the one's that are capable of working but don't far outnumber the one's in true hardship situations. The one's with any self respect and dignity will get back to work as soon as possible, they still have a bit of pride and self respect left. I'm tired of seeing and hearing about the huge families of food stamp users jumping in their Escalades to leave the shopping mall.

Sorry, didn't mean to get started on all that. I will just say I have to agree with you or I'll turn this into a book.

I think I said that once or twice also. My family are all democrats and I'm the only crazy one of the bunch. Or the only sane one.

* Oh no! I hope/I think? I have Jackie B's permission to post over here? *

I too was raised in a democratic family then I enlisted in the Marines. after spending time watching women and children die and being constrained by a democratic congress from taking positive action. 11 years later returning to civilian life I watch and listen to "liberals" trampling other peoples rights, ignoring the rue of law and harassing, cajoling and punishing any who do not agree to their demands it is clear who respects others and who don't. I voted in my first election in 1968 I voted democratic, that was the last time I've ever voted for a democratic.

Don't be silly, Mollie. Of course I think you should post your thoughts. I just tease when I say that you should go back to writing horse stories. :)

Bravo cowpuncher, I really enjoy your views. My parents are much the same as you, coming from nothing, struggling to start their own business and working hard every single day to provide for our family... and apparently the family's of everyone out there who doesn't feel like working as well? Don't you just adore tangible taxes? Although most people who aren't business owners aren't even aware of what they are, along with most of the other ridiculous taxes we're forced to pay, thanks to Clinton.
I can understand why these people would vote for Obama... They get more without having to do a single thing more than what they're doing now.
I also wonder how many people are aware that Obama is going to allow some of the 01-03 tax cuts to expire? He isn't very wocal about it... I wouldn't be either.

Thank you for sharing cowpuncher. I'm glad to hear some clear arguments against some of these serious issues.

Oh good! All is well with my soul. :cowboy:

Horse stories are way more fun than the pee place. :)

Politicss- I never paid any attention when I was in school.

Its only a matter of life, death, and freedom.

WE take so much for granted when our plate is full of food.
