I was thinking about this the other day and then I saw in the Flea Market section here some for sale....I'm wondering if they actually do work and help the horse keep a steady rhythm. Has anyone here used them?

Rebel likes to trot super fast....I mean, that's what he was trained to do when he was a racer....lol. But I'm trying to get him to slooowwwww down and most of all just have some consistency to his speed. He's improved GOBS since I got him, but I was thinking about rhythm beads the other day and wondering if maybe it'd be something worth giving a shot.

Opinions?

I bought one (this one: http://stores.rhythmbeads.com/Detail.bok?no=13) and when I got it, I was very excited but only tried it on Cloe once and that was when she was extremely green. I think I might begin using it and I'll come back to this thread and let you know how it goes! I'm sure it's not for every horse, since they're so darn unique but I am sure it works for certain horses.

I have one and I use it when I ride Jazzmyn on the hill. She seems to like it and has never had a problem with it. Not sure if it has slowed her down or not cause she is always wanting to go go! I love the sound though!:)

Supposedly they listen to the jingle of the bell and it acts as a sort of metronome for them to keep pace with??? Haha, idk! :p

I have a real nice set I bought because I have an Indian Pony. I never actually put them on him since the bells made him nervous. The instructions that came with them said it might take awhile for the horse to get used to them and to get them used to them gradually before actually putting them on and riding. I haven't done that yet as far as getting him used to them, I tried once and he was like "I'm outta here". I think my one horse would be OK with them but the other I don't know since his first reaction and I wouldn't try them on my mare because I'm sure the bells would drive my friend crazy and she'd wrap them around my neck [I board my mare at her place!] I do need to get them out there and get Romp used to them since I think they look cute.

Yes they jingle when my horse is gaiting correctly! ;) I put them on and walked about a bit before I went on a trail ride with them. It only cost me $30 for real glass beads, bells and leather twine and I got to pick the colors! It took me about 20 min and I had fun doing it.

The dressage riders here use them sometimes on well trained horses. It's not a good training aid as it's tooooooo distracting to your horse.

I would only use them for fun and trail rides!! Scares the hunters away tooo!!!!

I did some reading up on them once I knew what they were called and they are supposed to help keep the horse and rider in rhythm with each other but didn't read where they would slow your horse down just calm them (I would imagine that would come after they were used to the sound ;)). I saw them on some horses on a trail ride and thought they were cool. Made some for Koda and our riding partners just for fun and have gotten enough complements that I thought I'd make them to sell. I know that they are used for training but have never seen them used. I think they are great for trailrides!

Nope most are done on a thick rawhide string/rope which makes them pretty strong. I bought my first set and then later made my own in orange for hunting season.

Ment to add the first set is now over 5yrs old and still going strong.

I wrote this up last night as a flyer to post in my local tack shops. Good info for here too!

Rhythm Beads, often referred to as horse necklaces, are beautiful beaded equine necklaces that have many uses. Originally, Native Americans would adorn their horses with beads, feathers, bells and other ‘decorations’ believing it protected horse and rider from danger. What it also did was to bring horse and rider into balance or rhythm with each other so they moved as one.

Today Rhythm Beads perform much the same service as they did for riders in the past. Not only will Rhythm Beads make your horse stand out in a crowd or bring some flash in a parade or show, but the steady jingle of bells have proven helpful to riders that find it difficult finding their rhythm and often help the horse move in a more consistent gait. Horses that are easily spooked find the sound of bells soothing as they eliminate outside distractions that could startle your horse. These wonderful equine necklaces can also be invaluable in desensitizing young horses as well as keeping their minds on their movement while in training. ‘Speed Beads’ are a less dressy form of Rhythm Beads known in the world of barrel racing and other speed events. Rhythm Beads have also become popular in endurance racing for their ability to keep horses calm and focused over the long distances.

I personally recommend Rhythm Beads for all trail riders, from novice to the most experienced of riders. The music of bells warns any wild life of your presence and gives them the opportunity to move away before startling your horse with sudden movements. They warn others sharing the trail of your approach and allow them to collect their dogs, make room on the trail, etc., making everyone’s trail experience more enjoyable.

Our Rhythm Beads are hand made at the time of order and are created with the safety of your horse in mind. We use a high quality leather cord, colorful pony beads, and silver and gold bells plus offer an assortment of pendants to make your equine necklace unique and safe. All necklaces come with a clip attachment for easy release that can also be clipped to your horse’s mane so when going down hill or taking a drink the necklace stays in place. Should the necklace become caught or entangled the leather cord will break and your horse will be freed. Although beautiful, these equine necklaces are not ment to be worn in the stall or pasture or left on your horse unattended and we are not responsible for any loss or injure that may occur from the use of Rhythm Beads.

So whether a high level eventing horse or your child’s yard pony everyone can experience the benefits of their very own set of Rhythm Beads. Get yours today!

I did some more research on this and found where it will help with consistency but not in slowing him down.

They are very durrable but the leather will break if the horse becomes caught on something. It is a safety measure to keep the horse from being injured.

http://http//viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=423319990&albumID=202284&imageID=7598082 so i came up w/ a new design for his necklace, using a simple stitch using little glass beads, w/ the bells in the center for weight~I also considered doing a type of macrame thing, tying knots inbetween the beads. but it would take tons of extra leather cord for that. sorry i couldn't get the pic bigger here~its in my album though

I wonder if it was because i used glass beads? maybe they are too heavy. my projects always seem to go a bit off!
