I'm thinking about taking Hopi to Florida with me when I move. I've been looking at boarding places and have found several nice looking reasonably priced facilities in Jacksonville only like a half hour away. I'm not sure how much the hauling will be. I'm sure it won't be cheap, but I don't know how expensive it will be. I emailed several hauling companies for quotes but haven't heard back from anyone yet. Does anyone else have experience paying to get their horse hauled such a long distance? (OR to FL) What did you have to pay? When we moved from Alaska to Oregon we hauled her ourselves so all we had to pay for was gas. I'm thinking if I won't be able to bring her with me I might wait to move until next spring just because she's at such an important age where she really needs a lot of training and handling and I've had her since birth I don't think I'll be able to let someone else do all that while I'm away.

I'm guessing you'll pay a few thousand dollars.

Go to uship.com
Great website to find multiple quotes.

Equine express and Nation-wide horse transportation are also good ones if you haven't got quotes from them yet

From Kentucky to PA, it was $800+ so I can't imagine how much that would cost. Pretty expensive!

Last year around this time it cost me $400. to get Prize from Virginia to Ohio. I found the hauler on uship. Prize had a lay over for the night at his farm. He took great care of Prize. It helped me to feel better with Prize staying over at his farm being his wife was a vet.

I got one quote so far for $1200. Not as bad as I thought. I'm still not sure if it will be a possibility, but I really hope I'll be able to bring her. Alissa, I did contact both of those transporters today. Still waiting to hear back. I also posted on a yahoo group hitchhiking horses which is where I found the hauler for Auda two years ago. Auda's hauling fee from NV to OR was $645, and that's just one state over. OR to FL is pretty much complete opposite ends of the country.

Wow, $1200 is a good quote. I would have thought it would be a lot higher. Sounds like I got screwed!

May be moneys wise, but what about care.
I have found that inexpensive isnt always the best.
Just be careful.

You could be very well right, Vick. That's another thing I'm worried about. Sending her on a trip for x number of days with someone I don't know where I won't be able to check in on her.
I got another quote for $1300

Just make sure you get to chat with the guy or gal who's doing it. If the person is willing to chat with ya that is a good sign. If he doesn't want to give you details and talk things over with ya, then run for the hills. :D

When I recently searched for shipping from MA to CA I was quoted as low as 1100 to as high as 3000, Look for a shipping company that makes frequent stops and lay overs. I shipped Gracie from MA to CA, I went with her as I had hooked up with someone moving out to San Diego at the same time. The trip is tough, I won't lie. Gracie lost almost 300lbs but we also were on the road for 10days instead of the 6, like it should have been. many delays on the parts of my traveling companions.
When we shipped Hazel and Sunny, we shipped ourselves. it took us 5days as once we hit Oklahoma we stop trying to make our lay overs and drove through with a stops to sleep every few hours. but was also had a 5horse with only 2 horses so we could move them around within the trailer if we had to stop where we couldn't unload.

So far all the places I've seen offer references which I'd probably call. On uship they have ratings which I like. People give a certain number of stars for punctuality, commutation, care of the horses and so on. Unfortunately the only hit I've gotten on uship is for $3000.

My only question about this is, I thought the whole point of going to Florida for awhile was to free yourself of all the horse responsibility that's been tying you down when you are here. ;)

Yes, WB that's partially it. It's not just horse responsibility, it's responsibility in general. But I've been thinking about it more and more and I really don't think I can let someone else train Hopi and she's so young and gets so bored easily I can't just let her sit. I mean, I've raised her since birth she's been trained by me every step of the way and I've been waiting almost 3 years to ride her. It's not like I don't want her anymore, I'll always want her. I just need a break. If I had her down in Florida she'd be on full care board so it wouldn't be like it is now. She'd always be fed and cared for without me and I won't have to do all the work and be obligated to go out to take care of her every single day.
