As many of y'all know,iv been having back problems and haven't rode in the last few months.Well today I got to feeling better (pain killers of coarse) and got horse fever.I couldn't lift my western saddle,so I grabbed my English and tacked Shocks up.She was fine until we got into the woods and she spooked. She reared up and knocked me in the head.I fell off sideways but still managed to hold on to the reins.I landed on my shoulder and neck.I'm really sore right now.I know its all my fault and I shouldn't have even been riding.I guess karmas a B*tch.

Oh well,I'm officially done riding probably till next spring.I might even invest in a helmet.I don't like helmets and never really thought about ever buying one.But after my surgery it will take a long time to get my muscles back and I wont be able to cowgirl up like I used to.

Whats a low cost, good helmet brand?

Ouch! Sorry you hit the ground, I hope you feel better soon.
I've never not worn a helmet (apart from a reallydumb moment where I got on thought "this feels weird" and realised my hat was missing:p) I don't feel ok without it; but we have rules at the barn about helmets for under18s - which I personally agree with.

Ouch! Glad you weren't more seriously hurt!

I agree with VHL- Troxel makes a variety of low cost good helmets.

Yep, I'll third Troxel. Whatever brand you get, be sure that it is ASTM certified for safety. :)

I'm sorry you came off, hope you feel better soon.
I'll fourth Troxel. I haven't worn a helmet since I was 15 (I'm 17 now), but my parents used to make me wear one everytime I rode. Troxel's are pretty comfortable and not overly expensive.

Sorry to hear your first ride was wreck. Darn horses.

I can understand about the horse fever. When I broke my ribs, I couldn't stand to be off the horses. I did ride a little, but only in the arena. It still makes me nervous on the trails, since that is where my accident happened, but I only ride Dallas or Missy on the trails right now. ;)

I hope you heal up soon for previous and now new issues.

Here is the helmet I have. Works for me.

If I may add the other side to this....

I don't think you need a helmet, at least not right now and then only later if you still want one.

I am a firm believer that helmets are a false sense of security to most riders. If you where to get a helmet now and go riding and injure your back again...what good is a helmet really going to be?

I am not downing anyone who rides with one, but I am not a fan at all, and with you already injured the last thing you need is false security that everything is going to be ok if you ride. Truth is, it is not and as you already learned you can get hurt even in a fluke. Would a helmet have saved your shoulder today? Or the pain you most likely will feel later in your back?

You have learned that you have to be careful; a helmet will not help that lesson any.

This is just my opinion and I mean no disrespect to anyone...I know helmet discussions can get heated.

Goodness! I'm glad you're okay!

The type of helmet you get will ultimately depend on your head. I've found that Troxels do NOT fit me, however, IRHs fit me like a glove. :) So, I swear by IRH, I've worn them since I was 9.

Thanks Appylover I needed that (no pun intended)
Your right, I guess I am looking for false security.I know I'm a good rider but not at the moment.I shouldn't have got on the horse knowing that she hasn't been worked in months. blah blah blah lol
Me and mom got into an argument last night and she wants to sell Shocks.I want to free lease her, then get her back in a few months.I don't know mom's really mad at me for riding because I put the horse in danger when I fell off () Oh well thats another rant.

Don’t down your riding skills. Your fall was not about if you are a good rider or not. The only thing honestly that I see that happened is that you are not 100% “sound” and tried to do the things you do when at your 100%. Accidents happen; everyone who is a horse owner knows this. So limit the chances of another and give yourself the time to heal.

Work Shocks on the ground for now; get her into a “work” routine. This will be good for you too. Then when you are healed enough to ride go put her through tons of wet saddle blankets. Your mom, I would venture to bet, is a lot like mine, she is just worried about you. Giving yourself the time to heal will also give mom the time to cool down about the fall.

(Sorry not a fan of leases either...but if you do one, I would suggest only a partial lease that way you still have control over your horse most of the time. And make sure ALL the details are spelled out in a contract).

In my opinion give yourself time to heal, get back on your horse, and then go forward from there. Just what ever you do; don’t let this fall spook you.

I'd rather deal with a sore shoulder than a head injury. Troxel.

Thanks for the advise. :)
Mom's ignoring me so im not bringing up anything about leasing.I'll just let this blow over and in a few months If I still want to lease I will.
I just hate to see Shocks standing at the fence looking all depressed.

I understand, but she will be fine. Most likely a little spunky but she will servive. I am going through a recovery on the horse end and we haven't really ridden in about 4 months. Tiny little 20 minute walks once a week really is getting old fast. lol

Things will work out. :)
