View Full Version : Long night at A&M

Cold front came flying through, and "Tram" coliced last night. We worked on him with our vet for awhile, but he just could not get unblocked, so at 1:00 AM, we took him to A&M. They are cautiously optomistic. He did good, passed a few piles, vented quite a bit of gas, but early this morning had to go back on pain meds and sedation. Nothing seems to be twisted or strangulated....he's just plugged tight in his small intestine. He's dehydrated pretty bad as well, so he's been on the big 10 litre IV bags all night. ..and this morning he's got some reflux...but they expected that. They moved him from ICU to the emergency ward, so we're hoping he passes the blockage...keep yer fingers crossed :)

If anyone can do it, A & M can. They are GREAT folks. Although I admit that causiously (Hook 'em!) they are really wonderful people. Who is the vet assigned to your case? The director of surgery is amazing, although I forget his name.

I am so sorry that you and Tram are going through this. I know what you are going through as I spent a long night when Al had to go to New England Equine Practice up in Brewster, NY with colic. He ended up needing the surgery in the early morning. I hate colic and have become pro active to prevent it because I know another surgery is not in the cards. Good Luck and keep the forum posted.

Thanks!

Oh gosh... I am so sorry to hear this Steve. I haven't been around in a few days and this is the first post I see - I don't see an update though so I'll start sending prayers. I too have been there - just this last June my filly spent three days on IV fluids before her impaction started moving through - hopefully the same will go for Tram.

To PandorasMom who asked about season changes and colic... it isn't actually the weather that causes it to happen but it is the weather that causes the horse to change his habits. My filly stopped drinking water and I didn't catch it, some will stop eating, some will get a "nervous stomach" (like people do with changes they don't like)... it just depends on the animal. Where I am we have had about a week of 65 degree days with the overnight lows dropping as low as 28 degrees... this is VERY hard on horses that have already got winter coats on as they are sweating all day then trying to stay warm at night.

Thank you very much for the explination SedonaThunder. I greatly appreciate it! I tried to do some research on it but couldn't find much.

I greatly appreciate the information, it explains it to me very well. I had never knew about this until the past few months, but never thought to ask.

Thanks!

Colic is actually a generic name for an abstruction, solid or gas. When the seasons change, hot to cold or cold to hot the horse will change his eating and drinking habits. Usually this time of year they forget to drink enough because it's not hot out and that can cause intestinal issues. In the spring sometimes they will have problems with the rich spring grass, it's more than they're ready for after a winter of hay.

A&M is a bit of a distance from Houston (well only an hour or so) so he may not be home to post. Not sure if he is still up there or not. I'm just going to keep checking for an update!!

Make sure your horses are drinking water - if they aren't water down the hay. We've got a couple of horses at the barn not drinking water as much and their hay is being watered down nightly.

Sure hope it's going well for Steve and Tram.

Tram had been going downhill most of yesterday......pretty much everything they were pumping into him in IV's was being refluxed out of his stomach. His belly tap protein level was getting higher(bad).....then, about 4:30 yesterday, he had stabilized, belly tap protein actually dropped a bit, and he was up and walking around.

We are due for an update this morning, 7:00 AM.

Thanks gang.....

Vet update this moring was all good news. He has started passing more stools, and the reflux has stopped. They continue to hand walk him and will let him graze a little to see if he can tolerate it. We're still not out of the woods yet, but things are definatly looking better!

Thanks again !!!!

3:00 PM Update is very good. Tram is off all IV's and doing well. He has been grazing today, and they are introducing alfalfa hay today to see how he does. If all goes well, tomorrow he gets some grain to make sure he can process that OK. So, he has a few more days at A&M...but things are going well for him.

As if that wasn't enough, my daughter (who is Type I diabetic) and 8 mos pregnant also went in the hospital this week. They have decided to take the baby early.....Type I diabetics don't do well with childbirth.....plus, baby is only 4 lbs, so, he's coming TONIGHT. Babies of diabetic mothers have a much greater incidence of sudden death during chilbirth(for the baby), so, as a precaution, he's coming early. So, Grandpa Steve is going to the hospital tonight....(#3 grandchild...ALL boyz).
