The Stink in Farts Controls Blood Pressure

A smelly rotten-egg gas in farts controls blood pressure in mice, a new study finds.
The unpleasant aroma of the gas, called hydrogen sulfide (H2S), can be a little too familiar, as it is expelled by bacteria living in the human colon and eventually makes its way, well, out.

The new research found that cells lining mice's blood vessels naturally make the gas and this action can help keep the rodents' blood pressure low by relaxing the blood vessels to prevent hypertension (high blood pressure). This gas is "no doubt" produced in cells lining human blood vessels too, the researchers said.

"Now that we know hydrogen sulfide's role in regulating blood pressure, it may be possible to design drug therapies that enhance its formation as an alternative to the current methods of treatment for hypertension," said Johns Hopkins neuroscientist Solomon H. Snyder, M.D., a co-author of the study detailed in the Oct. 24th issue of the journal Science.

The research was supported by grants from the U.S. Public Health Service and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research as well as a Research Scientist Award.

They're going to design blood pressure drugs that make people fart more.

I picture either pay raises or labor shortages in nursing homes in the future. :D

I ask the fellas at work. "Do you do that at home???" I've had to leave the shop many times. We've had to ask one guy to never eat cabbage again, or else!

LOL...I NEED to show this one to my husband.....

Sorry ladies, but I let one "rip" EVERY morning! My kids fall on the floor laughing and hubby just shakes his head. Well, NOW we know why I don't have high blood pressure.... :hysterical::hysterical: Oh...and YES, I always do say "Excuse me".

Oh, dear Lord. Don't let my husband know about this study. The highlight of his day is to let 'em rip and then ask me, "What was that?" He knows good and well that I have to listen to enough of that kind of activity from my patients, so I'm not really interested in pursuing the subject at home...

WB...is it the actual act of "releasing" the gas or the gas itself that lowers the blood pressure. If it's the actual gas, this could have some serious implications. Would that mean that smelling the gas is what lowers the bp. I mean think about it; it seems that everything that's good for you either taste bad or makes you feel bad or now "smells" bad.

Sorry, just a thought.:)

Oh, and another thing!!! Maybe we should thank our dogs (since we don't do such things) when they fart, as they are helping to lower our blood pressure. They really ARE our best friends looking out for us that way. This may catch on and make it appropriate for public and make the ole church joke not funny any more.

OMG! Yours too, Vick? My hubby's can make your eyes water.....and you are right, it really pissed me off. You know what he did the other night? I was in bed early because I was not feeling well, almost asleep, he came in the bedroom for 2 minutes, got something, farted and left.

It was sooo bad it woke Kabota up out of a deep, drugged sleep!
I was spewing all kinds of bad words..........he said he "couldn't help it".

I can just picture it now... urban hippies setting up new age 'fart rooms' - you know... for your health! They'll feed you this health drink of mashed beans and cabbage in a slurry and close you in a small room with other hippies and a few large corn-fed dogs. :)

Hmmm. Well, all of god's creatures fart so it must be an enjoyable activity for some. We both pretty much fart the ssame amount amount around here. The dog, cats, Bob, me, not shy at all. Only place I do hold it is at work and I'm not as good at holding it in as I once was. They sneak out sometimes.

Holding it in is never good, can be very uncomfortable. Luckily, I am the only female at my job, and my house is full of males, so I don't really feel the need to. But I have gotten really good at making it look like it was someone else's doing.:innocent:
