View Full Version : Special Announcement on familiar screen names - Trust but Verify!

It occurs to me that within this move to this new forum lies a certain amount of opportunity for mischief.
We'd love to be able to take everyone at their word that they are who they say they are from horse.com.
Just don't lose sight of caution as we take everyone at their word, even if they have uploaded a familiar avatar and introduced themselves as the person we know, if someone starts acting out of character or is asking you for private or personal information they either should know already or wouldn't normally ask for.... ask some questions that would verify they are who you think they are before you give anything out, OK?
Report to me if you think anyone might be pulling a fast one on us or you think something is amiss.
Otherwise, keep having fun! :)
Uh oh! I hope nothing's happened! Stay safe everyone!

No - nothing has happened. And I was torn between making an announcement and giving someone ideas, but I decide to opt for at least making everyone think. If all we ever are is a screen name, it wouldn't matter, but many of these friendships go beyond that in this family and we don't want any imposters.

Actually a very smart idea, WB. There have been reports on other forums of username identity theft. Can't be too careful!

Good advice WB.. Thanks for being on top of things as usual. There are a lot of youngsters here and one can never be too careful. I wasn't all that well known on the old board as I was mostly a reader and not much of a poster. I hope to change that a little here and let people know me better as I get to know them too!

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. I have had people fake my screen name before on a different chat program years ago so I would keep an eye out and don't give personal information out unless you really know the person personally and can verify it is them.

Both look like my name but only one is correct. One is using a lower case L as the I but you wouldn't notice it at first. People do fake names if they think they can get away with it. So just be safe and confirm before you give out personal info :)
Thanks for watching out for us WB! :p

I never even thought of that. I am me, oursarge. I did change the horsey picture under my name. On horse.com I had Delta and now I have Sarge since I'm named after him I thought it would be a good idea to use his picture. I need to use Rompy's picture for something, I'll have to think of something.

Does WB think we are silly? It's not we are kids or anything. I just act like one sometimes.
A big six shooter is enough for me. My real gun is a .40 caliber semi auto Glock. Fifteen shots there.

That's good advice. Especially since I can clearly remember my parents explained that "we have the internet now...chat rooms are from the devil...everyone on them only wants to kidnap you...they are all old men pretending to be your friend..." of course that was in the stone age back when it was dial up and really slow dial up at that. Now I think nothing of grabbing horse forum members cell phone numbers and planning to meet at least 3 at a time at the expos. :D
