View Full Version : Strange gusty winds

Well, it's gusty and windy today in my cardboard house, surrounded by tall trees...

Scares me to sit here when little things are hitting the house, and it's freaking our scaredy dog out, but I'm not sure it's bad enough to abandon all comforts for the storm trailer, either, yet. I'm trying to learn the difference between paranoia and self-preservation. ;)

But in that... I went out and videoed how weird the winds are.... Look how it's moving in two different directions, showing even in these two layers of low clouds, and different yet, in the tops of the trees.

YouTube- strange wind 001

It will be gusting here one minute, and then not... quiet here, but roaring across the street. It's very unsettled.

We have that every single day here. Sometimes up to 50+mph. Luckily, the barn sit in a little mini valley and doesn't get it as bad as we do here at the apartment. Some nights it's so bad the windows rattle and the walls seem to sway.

Well, much as I love big trees, when I have our own place, I do not want to be surrounded by them any more. I'm one act of God from being killed here, and I don't like that at all. I'm not comfortable at all with those odds!

I know what you mean, we've got trees going down left and right down here and power outages. Night time seems worse than during the day. Trees coming down on houses and cars. People are on edge. Lots of tree trimming companies out and about trying to get ahead of the winds.

You've got trees coming down today?

I agree, it's scarier at night.

Oh yeah, wind is blowing around here. It's just now settling down. On my way to the docs office this a.m. there were two large tree branches down on the main four lane road. This area is always windy this time of year. We are just above Troutdale at the opening of the Gorge.

Might be my fault. I sent in the Tropical Storm of Doom to FL..and it's messed ALL YALL up! HA HA HA!

Kidding..but really, that's why. Most likely.

Cheval... You do tend to be windy through the gorge even when we aren't. You've got a high wind warning on your coast down there, and we do north of us... but right here where I'm at, we should just be 'breezy' but hopefully not dangerous.

Course then.... Florida people just laugh at our winds, don't they....

Course... they have no tall trees of consequence in florida either :p

Hmmm..... *goes to talk to that dang wind guy... he never gets it right.*

Well hopefully it calms down for you. I don't much like the wind either. I worry about the horses.

Actually interesting fact....

A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, someone had the BRIGHT idea to transplant northern oaks and other "top heavy" "large rooted" trees to good ole FLA...

Well, they didn't think about what would happen a hundred years later, at almost sea level conditions, when these trees had a root span of sometimes up to a half mile... one gust over 60...BANG!!! Big pretty, transplanted tree in your house.

The horses have their blankets on, so if the wind stopped, they'd actually be too hot, but they're fine, they bugged out of the barn when pine cones started bombing it, and they're out in the open where it's safe.

Days like this really conflict me on the horses, because it can be pouring one minute, dry but windy the next, but it's 50 degrees. I don't want to take their blankets off because they'd roll in the mud the moment I did, and I don't want to deal with THAT tonight. So they say on... There's worse things than being a little too warm, if they are.

If you want to know how often it's windy in a place, look at the types of native trees in the area, not the ornamentals someone decided to try... once. ;)

WB...you sure have some interesting weather out there. I still remember the picture you posted, maybe 2 years ago, of the trees, snow and just one little itsy bitsy light shining out from the tree...your house. It is dangerous for you when the trees are loaded with that much snow, but it was such a beautiful, cozy picture. I wanted to copy it but I think we all changed to your new forum and I couldn't find the picture.
Good luck with the wind...I like the video of the wind...

You can see our little porch light :) The other roof line you can see to the left of it is the barn.

I'm not afraid of the trees in the snow... We may lose limbs in heavy snow, but not usually the whole tree, unless the wind picks up ;) It's the wind that'll getcha, in this country.

You have some big ass trees around you, I'd be worried in the wind too.

Any one of them would flatten this place. All the way to the ground.

That's why we got the storm trailer now... camp trailer that sits out in the pasture. Because it truly is not safe under here when we have a storm. The question is knowing when it's time to go out there... not today, though the gusts scare me... really, I need to head out there when we're having gusts above 40-50... not 20-30.

That Hannukah Eve storm, two years ago.... hubby and I spent the worst of it in our truck, out of the range of the trees, watching. And it scared me to death watching them bend in the wind. Douglas firs like those don't break, they pull out of the ground, usually, when they go, and they'll go all the way to the ground, certainly, our little mobile home wouldn't stop them... and our winter storms that are accompanied by heavy rains are the worst, when the ground is saturated.

We'd watch all our trees bend in the winds that storm... gusts were over 50 and may have been close to 80. And just when I thought "they can't take any more" the gusts died back. We didn't lose any trees of significance... some in the back forty, but none that hit anything. But that storm left a lasting mark on me, and this place. And that's why we got the storm trailer.

Thank you WB...that's the picture-I love it. I remember when you got the storm trailer...good thing to have. We're pretty lucky with weather in this part of New York...we just have 9/11 attacks...and with the way things are going I'm sure there's another being planned right now. Real scary!

We all have some kinda threat in life, don't we. I guess it keeps us alert and nimble.

It has settled down now, so I'm liking my trees again.... for now :)

Love that pic!

The video of the clouds looks really neat, but the winds that come with it wouldn't be. I have some big pine trees here, and that's something that always worries me, too. A tree flattening the house, lol!

This is our storm trailer :) I bought it on craigslist for $500! :D

It looks a bit tacky sitting out in our pasture, but it is a comfortable place for us and the dogs to sit through winter storms, out away from the trees. It beats the heck out of sitting in the truck.

He's not bad... and he's a little better about drying off his wet feet before he gets in the bed than the dogs are. :D

Welcome to the weird winds WB.
We get those, yet try them black, higher winds, with more swirls, and wondering if yet another tornado is going to form LOL.
Id love to have winds like yours.

I understand. If we had frequent tornados I'd have a different set of fears. And no 150 foot tall firs in my yard at all ;)

very nice wind here too!! We got 100amphours back into our batteries overnight!! That's enough to run the TV for a few hours!! Living on a clear-cut has it's advantages.....so far...the trees are going thou....
