Well I think my search for my new barrel horse has ended. I'm headed up to a show this weekend and will be coming back with him. Pending his passing a vet check next week he'll be mine. So without further adu I'd like to introduce.... Skip the Cash Bar, aka Cash (yes another Cash on the board).

Moody Silver Blue x Skipa Star
Sire: Skip Hi Cotton
Josie Cotton x Joe Norfleet
Ron's Tonto Bars x Tonto Bars Hank
Dam: Casey Bar Cash
Lasey's Cash x Cool Cash
Cash is a 1992 AQHA Gelding. He's been owned by a friend/aquaintance of mine for 11 years. She sold him at one point and he was running 2D in Arkansas, but due to financial complications (2 horses and college) the girl sold him back to my friend. I rode him for the first time last week, and he's just a great ride. He walks around completely calm in the arena, and when you turn him towards the barrels he just takes off (but he will trot them if asked). He has very nice turns, though he does tend to want to turn on his own and we hit a few barrels. But alot of that is just us figuring each other out. I haven't run him on poles yet, but I plan to this weekend at the show! I'm gonna try to get someone to video us or take pics, but since my husband is going hunting I don't know if I can! But I'm gonna try real hard!

Yeah! I'm very excited. I'm not expecting the vet check to be too exciting, but since he is 17 I just want to cover my investment. But I know his owner, so I know this horse had been FAR from abused or even stressed! I'd be more hesitant buying a 17 year old horse from someone I didn't know. But we have lots of horses in our circut that are late 20's and still running strong. Just takes good blood and good care!

OOO.. he looks likes a nice boy! Congrats!!
Question for you...... his pasturns look a bit long, and I was wondering if that would hinder him in barrel racing? I only ask, because Joe has long pasturns and I am concerned once he really starts getting into the barrels.

Does it hinder them... not really! I've found small conformation things like that on barrel horses don't mean much... it's all heart! It does mean that they need to be started slower and maybe at a later age. But it shouldn't hold them back from running well.

Great... that's good to know. And yes, we work them slow! I think I have only loped Joe around the barrels once and that was just to see if he could do it. :D

He sure is a pretty horse..The way he is built it looks like he can drop his shoulders nice and low in the turns allowing him to dig in with the fronts and give a lot of push off the back end.

I think he is a well put together horse, but I was wondering about the downfalls of purchasing a horse his age for barrel racing. I am glad that you know his owner and feel he will suit your needs. Good luck with the vet check.

I was wondering about the downfalls of purchasing a horse his age for barrel racing.
I went back and forth alot on ages of horses to buy. With my budget I either had to buy a solid patterned horse that was older, or a young greenie with a good handle and train it myself. I finally just decided to go for the older solid horse right now. I figure in a few years we'll be trying to start a family so I'll have to back off the barrel racing anyway. And at that point I can either retire him or sell him to someone starting off or a young kid depending on how he's doing. If I can get 3-4 good years out of him, I'll be happy. I'd hate to pattern a young horse myself, and then when I get pregnant, either sell all my hard work or let it sit in a pasture. {geeze this scares the crap out of me just thinking about the p word... but it was something I have to consider in many decisions we're making right now} But like I said we have many horses running in our circut that are late 20's, and they're going strong as ever. I just hope I'm lucky enough to have found one of those!
Anyone have any suggestions on good supplements for elderly horses?

Elderly horses, not sure. I have my 11 year old barrel mare on msm, glucosamine, and some kind of cartilage stuff, I'll get the name of it.
The P word...I love it! HAHA. I'm already past that.

He's a good looker!
I really liked Fluid Action by Finish Line for my old boy, made him feel like a 5 year old again and he was around 18 when we put him on it.

Well I'm almost embarrassed to post the videos, but I know my forum family loves me and won't ridicule me (too bad). We had a great day at the show despite our poor runs. And Cash and Fiddler are now home with me safe and sound! So now I'll break down the show:
Poles: This was probably not a smart idea to enter. This horse has run poles alot and does them pretty well. I on the other hand have only run a pole pattern ONCE in my life and that was goofing off on Fiddler, so it was mostly at a trot!. We started out pretty good, I overshot the end turn a bit, and didn't keep my legs in so I knocked 2 poles. I was paying so much attention to trying to weave that I forgot to let go of the horn and switch my hands. So when I tried to make the next turn, my hands were backwards and I lost my balance, and then lost my stirrup. So that's us spinning at the end of the arena. I'm trying to stop him because I've totally lost my balance/stirrup/composure/etc, and he's trying to figure out why he can't go finish the poles! But check out his movements in the beginning, he's quick and agile.
fyi... that's the seller videoing me... her comments crack me up!
YouTube- Cash Poles
Barrels: I had run him on the cans a few times the day I tried him, and he's a very different ride from what I'm used to. He runs of leg and seat. You hold him off with your leg instead of your rein, and you rate him with your seat and not the bit. I just couldn't get this through my head and as we're charging at the first barrel I check him pretty hard and he didn't like that. So he ran really wide of the first barrel, but we got it back together and made a great 2nd barrel, 3rd was rough but that arena is deep as crap and he was just stuck. Even with all our flaws we still ran a 20 second time, and the winner was a 17 I think. Also I was riding him in my husband's saddle, and I'm not used to running left. So for my second time on the horse, not my saddle, and running left... not to bad!
again, more funny comments!
YouTube- Cash 11-21
I can't wait to start working with Cash. Well not so much working with him, but working on me getting with him! I just gotta find his buttons and remember how/when to push them!
Fiddler also did well at the show. He ran some 20 second barrel times... only his 2nd time on the barrels and he's 3, so I'm not pushing him too hard. He also ran a 9.8 and 9.6 arena races!!! I'm so proud of him. No one could believe he was just 3, he was so awsome... just not gonna have the speed, but he'll always be my baby!

Congratultions on the new horse:clap:! He sounds & looks awesome, a very beautiful boy.:) He sounds like the kind of barrel horse I would love to have- something that is well patterned & knows his job, but not crazy. Something that would be a good mount for me to learn on. I'll probably never have the oportunity to own a horse like that, I don't think my barrel racing dream is every going to come true unfortunately.
But yeah, anyway- I'm very happy for you and love the videos!:D He looks like an awesome horse.:) As for good supplements, I give my 20 year old BL Pellets and MSM and he does great on them.:)

Dakota, I really wish you were closer. She also has another barrel horse for sale. He's a bit more of a push horse, but can run a 16 if you push him. He's only 1500, I really wish you were closer! I think ya'll would get along great!

Well those weren't that bad! Pole run was going good til you lost your stirrup.
Barrel run looked good to in my op, 1st one was a bit wide, but other than that good stuff! Looks like you two will make a heck of a team to beat once you get with him. Great buy! I like him.

He is a good looking guy! I think once you 2 mesh together as a team and know what the other one is thinking, you'll be unstoppable!! He can really move it and I think you looked really good on him so don't be so hard on yourself! ;)

That would be awesome, but unfortunately I don't think I'm in the market for another horse anyway. Some day, but not now. My parents would probably kill me, lol. And it wouldn't be financially responsible of me either I guess.
I have always wanted to barrel race though. I was hoping Beauty would become my game horse but that isn't exaclty working out even though she is definately fast enough.:( I love her but she has issues and I'm not a good enough rider/trainer to work them out. Oh well. I'm hoping she'll be my trail horse when Dakota retires a few years from now. She isn't half bad on the trails so she has potential for that.:)

Congrats!!! he is goregous! and his 2nd barrel in that video was awesome! Youll get with him in no time! I wouldnt worry about his age like you said a lot of horses are running longer than before. I just retired my gelding last year and he was 25! he loved his job and was 100% sound, no arthritis or anything, he'd prolly still run if I asked him too!
As far as supplements what were you looking for a vitamin/mineral supplement? or something to help maintain weight?etc?

I like your new horse very much after seeing more pictures and watching him do his thing. I think you two will be great together once you have time to get to know each other. As much as you don't address the p word, you seem to be making very wise choices about your future and your horse's.

HE'S OFFICIALY MINE!!!!
It's offical, Cash is mine! I had his vet check done today, and we found a few things, but nothing to sway me from buying him. He got his teeth floated, which will have to be done every 6 months from now on, and he'll have to go on senior food, but that's all fine! So now he's comfy cozy in a stall here at the vet school, all snug in his blankie, just waiting for me to get off work so we can go home!
I also brough Black up here (horse in avatar). We thought we were going to have to put him down due to his epistaxis issues and exercise intolerance. But we scoped him and found that his symptoms are most likely a product of a colapsing trachea. There's no fix for that, but we can try to treat it with anti inflamatories before he works and those sticky sinus strips (anyone know where to get those?). So that was good news, we were really worried that it was something like ethmoid hematomas. So we'll see how he does.
So all in all a great day! I've been here since 10am, and I'm stuck here until 6am. Gonna be a rough night! But it's all worth it! I'm taking Cash to our first IBRA run on Sunday... I'll post pics and vids when I get back! Hopefully we can figure out that first barrel!!!
