Remember my thread last week about how Bay's water consumption had gone way up?

Had me all worried about Cushings, though the vet didn't seem to think it likely.

I just about called him today to have him come back and take blood anyway.

Last week I had to fill the water tubs twice a day, morning and night, twice what's normal for them. That was bad enough.

Today, every time I looked out there today Bay was standing there, playing with an empty bucket. I'd fill it again. Twice, three times, four times... Exasperated. Worried. Thinking about how to ask this question in a thread. Has he really drank about 60 gallons today?

Or is there a crack in the bottom of the dang water bucket?

That's the first question hubby asked.

The grass has disappeared...today my horse enjoyed dumping his muck bucket filled with water...something to do.
I'd also wonder about the crack in the bucket...???

Oh - but it's no longer a question. He was right! There was a crack in the bucket! :hysterical:

Just how long would I have continued to fill it every two hours?

I would have stressed and stressed and never thought about something being wrong with the bucket!

So poor Bay wasn't getting much to drink, and you thought he was drowning in water? He probably wondered why the heck you weren't giving him any water!!!

WashingtonBay

~chuckling~ He probably was wondering that.

Oh he could drink.... if he was quick. It was just a small crack ;)

That's a good one!

I have a friend who lost 3 sets of keys over the course of about 2 years. She also had these onoing problems with her shoulder and her purse. The purse just seemed to get heavier over time--she couldn't figure it out. Well, very shortly after the 3rd set went missing, the purse got really heavy, and she heard a jingling. Turns out there was a hole in the lining of the purse, and all those keys were right where she'd left them the whole time! True story, I absolutely swear! She's one of those with a big purse with everything but the kitchen sink in there, that's why it took her so long to figure it out.

LOL!! Good one!

We had a problem at my friends house, she got worried cause the horses were finishing off and entire stock tank full of water in a day. 2 horses. She was watching them very closely and filling the darn tank 2 times a day, she got frustrated. Didn't take long to find out that she was leaving the hose in the tank for easyier access. The focet has some sort of thing on it were it sucks the water back in, so it would eventually suck the tank down. LEave the garden hose out of the tank and the water was fine!

You know what's really funny? When you first posted about Bay drinking so much water I thought to myself "With my luck there'd be a hole in the bucket and I'd be freaking out over nothing... but WB would've thought of that..."

Life keeps us humble :)

Your story about the keys reminds me of a neighbor's dog... went off his food, couldn't hold anything down, started looking really bony. They took him to the vet and weighed him, he'd gained 10 pounds! What? He looks so thin!

They x-rayed him.

He was eating rocks.

Why did I have the urge to say "Tell it to the marines"?

Well, I just HAD to know, so, I googled and...

Don't ask me where I picked that up in my youth, no idea...

Well, this reminds me of a time years ago when I had a neighbor girl of ten or so watch my pair of cockers for the day. She thought they were hungry, and I guess that she gave them bowl after bowl of food until they stopped eating. When I got home, they were as swollen as a pair of ticks, and I was picking up huge piles of dog poop for a day and a half after!

Well, that's gotta be Depression related. It's funny how the poor guy got blamed for the Depression. He'd done work with WWI refugees in I can't remember what country--Finland or somewhere. That country actually went on to have a dictionary entry that had "hoover" as a verb meaning "to help" thanks to the man.

I am really glad Bay is ok.

The crack in Bay's water bucket is right up there with the day I turned my very expensive "non-kinking" water hose on and didn't have a drop of water.

Spittin' and sputterin' the whole way, I went to the other side of the barn to lift that water handle, even though I KNEW there wouldn't be any water.

Well there was and I wondered how could that be? Then it slowly dawned on me that must mean a leak somewhere further up the water line --- oh happy day ---not.

I walked back thru the barn to lift the handle on the "dead" water spigot one more time before working up the nerve to call Mr. WTW at work to inform him what his evening's project would be.

I lifted the handle and still no water as I knew there wouldn't be. In a moment of frustration aimed at this water event, I grabbed the hose, fully prepared to give it a good shake.

Well whad-da-ya-know, there was a BIG ole kink in that very expensive "non-kinking" hose. I excitedly un-kinked the hose and was immediately greeted with 12 psi of water gushing out in ways I didn't think a one inch water hose was capable of. I got drenched but that was ok because I had water:doh::doh::cowboy:

Yes, sometimes we do overlook the simple things in our quest to "worry about what to worry about next" - lol lol

This thread is too funny!! love the purse story and the non-kink horse (been there on both of those!). lol

I wish Muffins water problems were just a crack!! yeah, I would most likely do as WB did and think he was drinking it all and worry, but I would rather have a crack then this:

YouTube - Horse Broke Water Pipe

I'm sure some of you remember this from last winter? Muffin was a yearling in this. He has a thing for water, water hoses, automatic waterer's, and anything else he can play with. He broke the spigot right off the pipe. Just snapped it off like a twig. Hubby was gone for the week but luckily my neighborhood water company came by and capped it off for me.

Later last summer he broke another one at the back right of his pen. There is one more he is working on at the back left but I try to keep him away from the last one and as long as I don't turn it on, he can't hear the water running inside it and he wont try to brake it off to get to it. lol It was a bad design to put water pipes that close to a horse pen but it was there when we got the house. As long as he can't hear water running he doesn't bother the pipes. The two he broke had hoses on them with the water running. So, he went over and snapped the spigot clean off to get to the water/sound!. lol

Glad to hear that Bay is doing well and it was just a little crack. I had to get a large watering trough for cattle so Muffin couldnt tip, chew, or paw threw it. He plays too much!! Goofy horse :innocent: He wants his auto waterer turned back on but he busted the pipe to it:innocent:. lol

Yeah - I remember that scene. :D See here, it drains so well, it was not obvious that it was just leaking out :D

IrisGreen
11-02-2008, 07:52 AM
With my dirt you can tell very easily if something is leaking or not.. It just keeps making a wider and wider circle around the leak and doesnt soak in. It took a week for Muffins pen to dry after that pipe broke and it got sunny that week. I hate my ground, wana trade? lol

It's funny how animals will distroy the things they like? My dogs will distroy a bed I put out for them so they don't have to lay on the cement. It looks like it snowed in the back yard and I have to spend a few hours raking all the stuffing up. Yet, they loved that big bed for about 3 days tell they decided it was more fun to chew it up!

Muffin loves his push paddle waterer but busted the pipe to it! Now a year later he still will go over every once in a while and push the paddle hoping water will come out. lol Poor guy loved that thing and now it's broke. I need to get the hubby to un-bolt it from the rails. I guess since I am thinking about it we can do that today :)

I was going to ask about how well 60 gallons of water drains in a day in Washington...

Anyway, I have a few teenagers who either board their horses at my barn or lease mine. I also have a 300 lb pet pig that wanders around the barn stealing horse treats and lunches and what not. I was in the chicken coup when the girls started screaming "the pig bit the water hose off the wall!" And he did, right in the barn aisle...... he grabbed the whole spiggot and ripped it off the wall, with 3 girls standing around the growing flood yelling, "I can't make it stop!" While they were all in a panic, I quietly walked up to the house and shut off the water line that goes out to the barn. I then heard one of the space cadets yell "I fixed it!". Sure ya did, with your magic powers you capped a broken pipe......amazing......;)

I called my husband and told him to pick up a 1/2" 90 on his way home from work, just in case she couldn't get the water to magically start working in the barn without water spurting all over the barn aisle again........

As for the pig, he has been staying in his pen unless closely monitored.......

If there's one thing we have to be pretty good at here, it's managing water.

The water buckets sit right in my drainage 'slough' of sorts, and since I overflow the water so often as I fill it, seeing water there was not itself alarming. :D

Yeah, we do ok here most of the year as long as a tropical system doesn't come through, then we are underwater for a while. Its kind of a battle for the fill between us and our neighbors to see who can build their property the highest in preparation for hurricane season. We had 20 loads delivered last week, so we might have a fighting chance next year! Now it will be a challenge to grow grass....

If I had that much water in one spot, you would know it.

Glad to know Bay is ok.
