Sorry guys, this might be a long one, but I need it.....
Well this weekend I traveled to South Carolina with the Equestrian Team to compete at College of Charleston. It ended up being a beautiful day and I was pretty excited. Due to some craziness recently, I am now the Co-Captain of our huntseat team, so I was stoked about that as well.
I drew a mare named Rizzo for the jumping. She was pretty cute, but older, and he tips said to ride her forward because she tends to add. I watched her go in a flat class and she seemed well-behaved but short strided and kind of rough.
The course was odd. It started off the left lead over a bending line bending to the right. As many of you will know, courses generally start with a single because it's harder to get your momentum going good enough for a line right off the bat, especially on a horse you've never ridden. It walked as a forward five if you rode it bending. Because of the turn to the third jump, you really needed to jump the 2nd jump straight, so everyone had to make a decision about whether to bend it, or try and jump it as a straight line...
Since my mare was so short strided and shuffly, I knew I was going to have to work to get her down it in a five or whoa for the six. I decided to go for the five. I knew if I could get good distances through the line and ride it right, the rest of the course would be fine, but I was pretty worried. I was the first one to jump her and she was a pretty rough ride.
Anyways, I ended up absolutely nailing the first line. Textbook perfect. Got her around the whole course in really good shape, great distances to everything, nice turns, all my leads, etc. She swapped out a few times, but that couldn't be helped and the judges are supposed to overlook horse error. She really didn't like going on her left lead and actually refused to pick it up in a flat class later on. I suspected some soundness issues. I had to keep her really tight between my leg and hand to keep her from getting strung out, and to keep her stride as long as possible. I came out of the ring thinking first or second for sure....
I ended up placing 4th out of 5. I'm a pretty good sport, and I have no problem placing low if that's how I rode compared to others, but I was a little miffed and confused. After the shows are over, you can talk to the judges and they will pull your card and give you notes. First, she told several people in front of me that she didn't have notes for them on the flat because she chooses her top 6 in the first turn of the ring and then only watches them....
Finally I get to talk to her, she pulls my card and says I completely missed my distance to my first fence!!!! No, I did not. There wasn't even a question of it being a perfect distance.... Then she tells me I rode the entire course off my hands and didn't use enough leg an seat... I had to actually think to pick my hands up and use them. I ride with such a strong leg and seat that I someimes forget my hands and get drug around... Then she tells me I missed a lead change! Again, no. I got the change she pointed out, the horse swapped back a few strides before the jump because it was on the left lead, again..... She also said I got too deep to another jump, which I didn't! I was getting so upset. I just smiled, nodded and thanked her, but I was livid! I feel like she didn't even watch my course and was just making things up! She kept repeating the thing about missing my distance and I couldn't even believe her. What was she looking at?!?
I'm just so frustrated right now. I'll get over it though, there's always next time, but it's just so discouraging.... And this is the second show I've had the judge make a completely retarded comment to me about my placing that just made no sense. At GSU the judge didn't place me because my horse was acting up... even though they're only supposed to pay attention to rider error! Grrrr..... :banghead:

Well, I'm sorry you were poorly judged. But I see a lot of good in this. First off, you know you rode better than you were judged. Nobody can take that away from you. Secondly, you are quite competitive. You aren't about to be content with a low placing that you didn't even earn. Finally, this is all terrific experience. This will be great for both your resume and also for practical experience when you are running that huge training program 10-15 years from now.

So good job!

Geez! I'm sorry you weren't judged properly. Sadly I don't think theres much you can do, but you can just live with the satisfaction that you DID ride it correctly!
Don't worry too much, I know you're annoyed.. But there isn't much you can do =/

Hey Peyton sorry about your experience. All the same, I am glad you are riding.

Liz had something similar happen to her.. different but similar. Her horse she drew was a complete night mare, the judge pulled her from the class, promised her a re-ride, but when it came time for the re-ride the judge changed her mind. Liz was livid as well. I think she has gotten over it, but very disapointed in "promise forgotten".

You still have a few shows left, so go and enjoy them. Oh, congrats on the co-captain thing.

oy that's really frustrating. :/ Can you write in a formal complaint or something? She's with the organization right? I don't think it's fair that she doesn't right notes on everyone.

I'm sorry the judge didn't really see your ride, obviously she was not paying attention or just is not a good judge like she should be. Chalk it up to experience, you really never know what the judge is going to say or favor. That's the sad thing about horse shows with one judge, they can be bias or just plan don't know what to look for.

You said you drew a horse...I don't understand? In this show you draw horses you've never ridden? I've never heard of that before but I don't know anything about English. That just seems really hard to get on a horse you've never ridden but if the judge is only supposed to judge the riders ability to put the horse where it should be and on the right lead then that's pretty neat. So, it's just judging on the riders ability to get the horse through it even though they have never worked together? hmm, Interesting..

It does stink when that happens, but it is part of it.
I got BURIED once in a color halter class because I was prego and the judge thought I should not be showing.GGGRRRR

Judging is subjective and it can be very discouraging when you have ridden well. I have seen riders pin over my daughter who have fallen off or whose horses have refused jumps when my daughter had ridden well. I get explanations of well the horse was too dressage looking in his movements or the distances were poorly judged and my favorite was her left rein looked twisted. She has also failed to pin and seen other riders place higher who were NEVER in the correct lead. I guess there are politics everywhere. When you show you have to be prepared to do your best and recognize when you do even if the judge doesn't.

There's not really anything I can do about it. There is a judge review that the stewards do, but nothing I can do. I probably wouldn't take action anyways because that's not really my style. I understand it's a sport where you have to deal with another's opinion so I've learned to just let it go and move on. The judges aren't with the organization. They're USEF carded judges who are hired by the individual schools for single shows. No judge can judge more than once a year in a particular region, so at least I won't have to see her again this season.

IrisGreen- The school putting on the show provides the horses and you draw randomly from a pool. If your school is hosting, you may draw something you've ridden before in lessons, and there's always the chance you draw a horse you've ridden at a previous show, but it's still completely random. I haven't ridden a single horse I knew in any show this year. The horses are warmed up before the show by non-competing team members, but you get zero warm-up. You can only walk around for a minute or so before your class on a loose rein. You go straight into the ring, pick up the canter and start jumping. You get a horse chart that lists every horse with a description, what aids you can use, whether it does flying changes and a few words about how to ride the horse. Mine said "Easy ride... Keep leg on and ride forward or she will add." It can be difficult, but I like it. It's fun and kind of a thrill to ride a completely random horse. The draw is exciting, like playing the lotto, lol. You see horses warming up and pick out favorites and really hope you draw one of them and then you have to wait and see!

That sucks, atleast you know you rode well though

Judges this weekend eh? Yesterday at the showjumping (we won) the judges had her nickers right in a twist. We all walked to the arena to walk the course (at the time stated). We all walked in, she yells "The course isn't ready for walking yet, get out!" at everyone. EVERYONE in my class!? We were all puzzled. She was very rude. Then at the prize giving she gave me my rosette with a glare, then went to the girl who took 2nd and said "beautifully ridden, those (three) refusals were naughty and not your fault at all". Now, this girl was not a bad rider. Not at all, the course was hard. But she kinda sat there =/ Like, the horse just took the mick cause she wasn't even using any leg or asking for take offs. Billy jumped really well, he was a little looky at the jumps but he always is, they're scary :p I got it taped and the course looks neat and tidily ridden. We met it accurately, went over in a nice style and were fastttttt!:D So why did I get a glare and no compliment or even a well done!? It just seemed kind of unfair. Infact she said to my mum later on "She was asleep comming into the first jump". Geee, I felt so asleep right. She really wound me up, but hey, we won :p

I'm sorry about the judge. I've had my fair share of unfair placings. Only with my shows it was always favoritism with quarter horses vs. arabians. I always place low because my horse wasn't the favored breed and it was actually trained by me and not a professional trainer. I dealt with it, though, and one year we got a fair judge. I placed at the top of the class in everything and we did halter, english, western and costume (but that is a different story. ;) ).

I also just wanted to say that I'm so jealous. Even if you didn't win or place as high as you should, that sounded like lots of fun. The whole horse lotto sounds very interesting. That is one of the reason's that I love lessons. You get to change horses all the time and get new experiences. It's wonderful to ride the same horse all the time, but it's also fun to change it up. :D

Good luck and feel free to post about your experiences. I love reading about it. :)

Well great job on the co-captain !!!! And sorry for such a bad judge. I think we've all had them. Although I'm not an english rider, I do know that when I as a person mess up I know it, and I also know when i didn't , as you said you did, so at least YOU know you were awesome, the heck with the judge!

If I had a nickel for every time a judge said I missed a bronc out, slapped, or fouled a bronc I would own my own rodeo company. So I know how frustrating it can be, all you can do is go forward and not get mired down in the bad experience of it. Plus my sister went to the College of Charleston they are all a bunch of snobs anyways LOL...............Kevin

This is the reason I've moved on to barrels... timers don't lie!!!
I've delt with crappy judges all my life because I was never from the right barn, with the right tack, or on the right horse. You learn to make your own victories, but I know you already know this!
So just make a vodoo doll of the judge torture it over a glass of wine, and move on to the next show!!!!
And a trip to Auburn, will always make you feel better!!!!

So sorry to hear! At the end of the day, judging is judging. She could be biased toward you or your horse's colour.

This is why I too quit seriously showing before it even began. :( I did one fun show and gave up after I ran out of the course. Horrible memory.
