i just spent the last 2 hours helping a couple catch their horses. it started by me and hubby seeing horses running loose on our road. we ran into a couple in town that we know have horses on our road so we asked if they where theirs and yep they where. so we all went back to where we saw the horses to try to catch them. after a little looking we found their tracks but they ended when they hit the pavement so we where stuck. a lady driving by stopped to tell us she had seen them going up a dirt road about 2 miles back to town so we all drive that way and up the dirt road we went. we ended up seeing them right away but the owners(not having any clue started yelling their names and runny to them:eek:. so they ran off in to a really wooded area. me and hubby followed on foot and ended up finding them at a persons house that had 2 horses. and the smaller of the horses we where trying to get(come to find out he is UNCUT!!!) was starting a fight with the homeowners horses. we get the horses we are after away from those horses and they ran to the other side of horses paddock. i had hubby go see if the homeowners where home and a lady was and she let us use her round pen to trap the horse. after a bit we get them in there and i ack the horse's owners for their halters and she said she did not bring them!!!( who goes to get loose horses and does not bring halters and a rope!!!) i had a length of rope in my truck for tying thing down so i used some of that to make a halter and lead for the mare(studs mom) and we borrowed a halter and lead from the homeowner for the colt. neither horses have been worked with at all, they just barely lead. so after a long drive with the wife and my hubby sitting in the bed of their truck leading the horses back to their property(we where not even going 3 miles an hour) with me driving behind with my flashers on we got there and they just put them back into the pasture that they had gotten out of that day, not caring that they would have to be doing this again once they got back out. mind you they have 3 horses, they dont do anything with them and there are 2 mares and the stud. the owner did not realize that the stud would breed with both mares regardless that one is him mother. i think next time i see them out i am going to keep on going!
people like this really should not own horses. both horses are untrained, unhandled, mustangs!!

I think next time, if there is one, Id not call the owner, catch up the horses and find them a home.
Do they know where you live? If not, even better.

I knew someone like that once...... they had a few horses and never rode or did anything with them, let the colt go un-gelded, years later he was a stallion with a nasty attitude and totally not trained...... WHY do people like that even own horses.....

they know where i live. but if i had the place to keep the stud( he is a few years old) i would have just brought them home. he was a really cute looking boy but really needs to be gelded.

Some people just need a good shaking..I just can't believe some people.. Duh ! of coarse a son will breed his Dam, Sister or any other mare. No different then any other livestock or even dogs and cats. It only takes good ole common since to know that. Some people you just have to wonder how they survive themselves.

There is not much we as horse person's can do. I'm dealing with a idiot again mind you this guy is the one we got our paint pony we had to put down because of the abuse he received . Left a lead rope attached to him and would chase him down with a tractor to catch him. We were there watching this when the tractor tire ran over the rope the horse flipped over I told my husband to offer him anything just to get the horse out of there. We later had to put him down due to his poor mind was just gone and he became a danger to his self and others, six months later he got a pony yearling and staved it to death. Because he had pushed the body off of his property onto the county right of way we couldn't prove it was his.
now he got a free 3 yr mustang from a buddy. He came by a few weeks ago asking if we would go check out his new horse. chuck and I were like oh no here we go again. so we go over there and sure enough it's a 3 yr uncut bay mustang out the in pasture with a 10 ft rope attached skinny as can be with hooves in such bad shape I was just sick, he leads, ties, comes when you whisle, just won't let you get near his feet. around here you aren't going to get anyone to work on a mustang's hooves ( it took a year of covering Rein's brand and before our shoer found out he was trimming a mustang) We can't afford to take in another horse much less a uncut one so I have already made a few calls but nothing has been done yet. Because the fence is not that great where he is being held I have a fear if him breaking loose. My mares know he is there they can hear his calls and they call back I just hope that he doesn't decide to break free before something is done. I all ready have one oops on the way thanks to some friends.

I agree - these people certainly need some help in "horse-husbandry". However - we can also add to your thread title - "some people should not have children"; "some people should not own dogs", "some people should not have a driver's license"...the list goes on and on! Unfortunately our society allows people do do almost anything they want, so the best thing you can do is try to help educate these folks about looking after their horses. We have neighbors right next to us who - in the 4 years they've lived there - have bought one of almost every living creature on the face of the earth. Most - they keep a short while and then get rid of because they become too much "trouble" to look after. But they own a horse - who gets absolutely no training what-so-ever, but is left in a small paddock , by herself, to do nothing but basically go crazy. She has escaped her "cell " once or twice as well, and it was my husband and I who managed to entice her with a bucket of grain into our south pasture (couldn't get close enough to get a halter or rope or anything on her) so that she would at least be off the road and not in danger. The owners came to get her, but could not catch her, they had to "lead" her with the bucket of grain to the gate in the fence between their place and ours in order to put her back in her paddock. So - believe me there are more people out there who have NO CLUE, than there are people who do. Try to educate - it's all you can do.
