I'm going to the California Draft Horse and Equipment Sale today! I love this auction! It's held twice a year in Tulare about an hours drive from me.
As most of you know I am training my Spotted Draft to drive. I love going to this sale and seeing so many Drafts and Draft tack all in one place. I can't find anything Draft size around my town and there's not a lot of people that have drafts around here. If they do own a draft it's just a riding horse if that. There are just a few driving horses in town but most are light horses or mules and just a hand full of drafts or half drafts. Most people don't seem to want to take the time or money to train a horse to drive so even if they have a draft they would rather just ride it then put all the money in to a cart, harness and training. I guess you just have to have a passion for it to put forth all the extra money and time.
I will get some pics and let you guys/gals know how it goes today. I'm going to the driving horse clinic and dog herding clinic today. The sale is tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday.
Here is the site if you want to check it out. If you click on "consignments" at the top right you can see some of the horses, carts and equipment that's going up for auction.

They also have a "live" video feed over the internet for the sale. It's fun to watch if you can't make the sale. It's neat to watch and see what stuff goes for. The amish trained driving and or riding horses always go for the most even when they are not registered. Goes to show people will pay thousands for a truely dead broke horse and don't care if it's papered or not.
I will get some pics for you all and post when I get back later today!

Have fun!! Definitely report back with pics :) I wasn't up to speed on the fact that you were teaching Muffin how to drive, I think he'll be great. Are you also training to riding? Can't wait for an update! :)

Mandzanita,
Yeah, I am training him to drive and once his is 3 or older I will be training him to ride. He's 2 1/2 right now. Everyone wants me to ride him and most people that meet him are wondering why I am holding off once they see him in person. He is thick and stout but I learned from the forum members to hold off on riding a half draft tell they are a bit older. So, we stopped his saddle training and focused on his driving training.
He has had my Mom or I on his back and walked around his pen before with no problems but that's about it and we stopped once we read about not starting them tell later.
I wanted him to drive anyways. That's why I seeked out a half draft. Muffin turned out to be the perfect horse for me. Not too tall (so I don't have to through saddles and harnesses that high), calm, and thick with a big butt(I love me a big butt horse!) :) I hope he turns out to be a good driving horse and so far he has the mind set for it. Just have to finish his training.

I drove this team of Percherons. They were really well trained Amish horses. Very light on the riens and responsive for only being 4 year olds. They are more of the "show" type percheron that is sleeker and high stepping, less bulky and slugish.

This guy was such a nice guy!! He was from some other state (can't remember) and such a jolly man. He plays Chris Cringle during Chrismas, instead of the kids coming and sitting on his lap and telling him what they want (like they would with Santa). He has them stand infront of him and tell him what they have done good this year so they can be put on the "nice list". His wife has a note book and she writes down there name and there good deed. It gets the kinds thinking about giving and doing good deeds for others instead of getting what they want because they asked for it from Santa. Put's the kids on the spot too! They have to think of something they have done nice for someone else! Most of them get stumped and the parents have to help them out. lol Too cute!

Yeah, I am trying to restrain myself!! Ohh man do I wish I had the money for a few of those wagons!! When I took these picture it was early Thursday morning. All day long people were trucking in more and more wagons, horses and stuff for auction. I didn't even get half of what is going to be for sale!!
Here are the last of the pics I got yesterday.

Just some of the stuff outside for auction. There were 4 rows of stuff outside when I left to go see the herding clinic and people were still unloading stuff!

This really cool washing machine. It had a faded lable on it that said 1888!! It worked great! You turned the big wheel and it made that agitator spin and move up and down inside the bucket thing. It was really neat and it great condition for how old it is! These guys where checking it out while Me and one of the guys wife were standing there laughing at how they were taking such an interest in a washing machine. The wife was telling him there is no way he is getting that for her and she is just fine with there current automatic one! lol

Ok, Here are some results I wrote down as the auction was going yesterday....
The two white purcherons went for $2,300 each as a team. I guess they where used at Disnyland for a while too.
The two black 4 year old percherons that I drove went for $3,000 each as a team. Very nice pair!!
Jump seat purple frenge buggy, $1,600
Watkins Wine sales buggy, $2,250
Big Chuck wagon, $3,000
White Vis a Vis, $2,200
Milk/Ice cream wagon $5,500 - No sale - Pass
Wood Vis a Vis, 4,250
Red Fire truck looking wagon (The pic with me and the guy) 1,800
Big Red Hitch Wagon, brand new (pic of it pulling up on the flat bed) $3,500
Green Hitch wagon, brand new (pic of it on the flat bed too) 1,300
There was a lot of horses that couldent get $1,000 and passed.
A few Amish trained horses that got over $4,000 and other non amish but well trained for under $2,000.
It was fun yesterday watching the auction. It was an all day thing from 9am tell 5pm!! I didn't buy anything. I wanted a pioneer training cart but they only have one for sale and it went for more then I could offer. Maybe next sale I will get one..
I will go back and edit the pictures and put the prices they went for if you don't know what cart or wagon I am talking about.
Off to make some coffee first :)
