I thought this would be a good thread for those of us newer to horses :)

What are good things to have around at all times for first aid type stuff or anything really I guess?

I went to www.equimedic.com (http://www.equimedic.com) and picked one out that I thought looked complete and fit my budget. I got the small trailering kit, I believe. My vet added bute, banamine, and DermaGel for me.

Duct tape for hoof wrapping, not to mention the 1001 other uses!

Roll on fly spray or Swat fly cream for around wounds.

Add some high density foam board to that. 6x6 squares are pretty good for most saddle horses.

I second the diapers and/or maxi pads. They work the best for big bleeds! Had to use some today!

Diapers make a great hoof wrap as well.

I also keep latex gloves, flexible flashlight (for hard to reach areas), a stethoscope and a pen and paper in my first aid kit to record vital signs for the vet.

I keep all this on hand in a toolbox in my tack room:

Vet wrap
Gauze
Latex gloves
Saline solution
Hydrogen peroxide
Wound gel or antibiotic cream or whatever you feel is best
Bandage scissors
Surgical tape
Spray bottle

I usually keep a thing of bute, too but mine just expired last month.
