I've been following Elmer's story in TheHorse.com since they started six months ago. These two just came in my email today and gave me goose bumps, smiles and even some watery eyes. The way this horse is treated by his owner sets a wonderful example for all horse owners and may we all be so lucky to have such healthy horses at ripe old ages!

I know Elmer and Kelpie from Ten Sleep Wyoming days! We both worked at Trek Corral at Girl Scouts National Center during the summer of 1986. She's the coolest lady, and he's the coolest horse!

Wow! I've been following this all summer, too. That is so fantastic! It gives me hope that maybe Gypsy and I will still be together moseying along for a trail ride when she's 37!

That is soooo cool! Maybe you can tell me then "what is the other half"? They always refer to Elmer as being "Half Arabian" but never mention the other half. He looks AMAZING for his age - I guess that's a lesson to us all about how much younger we'd stay if we got out from behind these computers more often!:) (I keep swearing I'm going to start riding my stationary bike again any day now.)

I can't remember--wow, it was 22 years ago! I would assume TB, just based on his looks, but for the life of me I can't remember. Kelpie's tiny and Elmer's big--so she makes him look bigger, and he makes her look smaller, if you know what I mean! I've never gone to Walmart to scan old photos, but they do have a machine that does that now, maybe this weekend I'll scan some pics of them from way back when.
I really will see if I can get some pics scanned and put on a cd this weekend.

Hmmmm...I'm looking at my album right now, and they're your typical 1980s, cheapie camera pics, and may be a bit dark. I'm going to give it a try, though--I'd love to post them! I wonder if I actually have the negatives...hmmm, some more--time to do some digging.
When you work at a girl scout camp, you usually get some kind of a memory book at the end with signatures and stories and addresses, etc. GSNCW had a "last will and testament" page. Here's part of mine: "To Kelpie, a lifetime supply of Diet Pepsi and enough people to ride off the Vee on off time." I guess that we could go off riding on our own if we had enough people, but I can't remember. Here was hers:
"Mary Anna (Kelpie) Wood--Elmer gives his ribbons to Trek Gymkhana. Kelpie gives her books to a HO girl." Can't remember what HO was--I know that we had SBA (Susan B. Anthony) and Sac (Sacajewa), but can't rememeber HO...
Oh well, I'll see what I can do about the pics.

thats so cool! It doesn't really matter what age the horse is, just how much spunk. He doesn't look 37!
