Well, it's shivery here, and I noticed this year that Bay's old Weatherbeeta, while still waterproof after all these years, didn't have much fluff any more. His green one was probably 7-8 years old, and the blue one even older...

So we went in to the tack store today and bought him a new one. I got a size 81... and its a little too big on him, but his last one was a 78 and it was nearly on the last hole in front, particularly when I doubled them up. I thought this one would be better... Better too big than too small!

And... My hubby and Cyn... doin that thing they do...

Oh - and another shot burning some of last year's storm debris in the back forty this morning :)

Bay looks all snug and warm in his blankie!

Gotta laugh at WBoy and Cyn! I think they enjoy that a little too much?!:hysterical::)

Looks like someone's enjoying a warm fire, at any rate! Not going to let that free heat go to waste!

You and I both... there's something not right about that whole thing ;). She nickers and squeals at him to rub her udder. She nickered and squealed at me, and the farrier, this week for the same thing and I said 'oh noooo - not me!' That's not my thing with you!

Somebody went shopping today! Blankie looks good. I notice the 'new' Weatherbeeta blankets run a little bigger than the old ones. Like you say, a little big is better than small.

I like how that blanket fits on the neck.

My husband does the same thing with our mares. I guess a boob is a boob, or something, but he says he's getting them prepared to accept nursing. Hopefully, he means when they foal.

It's the "Original" Orican design... almost exactly like his older one... I like the taller gusset on it, better than the shorter gusset on Cyn's...

http://www.baywindfarm.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=433&pictureid=5896

I don't like those gussets ^. I would have liked to get the high neck like hers, but they didn't have a high neck in the store in medium weight... they had some with really high removable necks, but I wasn't so sure I wanted all that.

I do still have Bay's old high neck, and for rainy weather, it'll still work just fine if needed...

Oh, boy! What a little hussy!:hysterical:Your hubby created a monster!

She squealed at the farrier just like she's in heat, and swished him with her tail, when he went to pick up her back feet. Monster indeed! Seriously! I reminded him that she's really not threatening to kick.... he said 'oh yeah... I remember this mare...'.

I`ve been looking to buy a weatherbeeta. How do the sizes run? One horse ran a 75, and the other a 68. I`m just so confused.

Well, Bay doesn't pay her any attention, so she has to try somewhere!!

My experience with the Weatherbeeta is that they are a size bigger than advertised. For example, my Halfinger Peach can wear a Saxon brand 72" blanket and a Defender brand 72" blanket, but the Weatherbeeta Oricon 72" blanket swallows her whole. They are cut big in the quarters and shoulders, and have lots of extra fabric in the gusset, and a really big tail flap that is partially closed. My wonderful Arabian Taz got manure all over the tail flap of his Weatherbeeta because he lifted his tail up and sideways to potty, the way the tail flap is attached around the hindquarter did not facilitate this maneuver very well!

hey since I saw this I have a question maybe ya'll can help with. Blanketing a horse around here is rarely an issue it just does not get that cold for that long. However this year that does not appear to be the case, we have already had snow and has generally been predicted to be the coldest winter in 20 plus years (that glo BULL warming ) so my question is at what point do I blanket Jackson?.....Kevin

I know it's different for everyone but this year I started blanketing at temps in the mid to upper 20's. I also blanket if it's sleeting or if just feels nasty out but the temps are higher.

Last year I blanketed at anything under 40 degrees and they did fine too. This year they all seem to have nice think fluffy coats, so I started with lower temps.

I think some people blanket at anything under 50... I know Amy (Equine Woman) blankets and she's in TX but I can't remember what temp she starts at.

ETA: OOps forgot to say, "Nice blanket Bay!"

I've varied a little in the past, on when I start, it really, like lovesfortune, depends on what else we have besides temperature, if it's windy, rainy and nasty, I'll blanket in the 40s. This year, it got cold without rain and I waited till it was below 40. Anything under 30 and I double mine up. They were doubled up last night when it was in the 20s, and they stayed doubled up all day because it's gotten only up to 35, and it's really windy and feels really cold. Tonight it's going to be 11. Brrrr... We're having a really odd December... clear cold and dry. A little windier than I'd like, but I'm not complaining. Sometimes by now we've had 30 straight days of rain.

OH and i forgot to mention that i use medium weight blankets for my horses. and i never double up. norman's is actually heavy weight, but he probably doesn't need it, but it was the only blanket that I could find that fit him properly. They also have access to a run-in that they have actually been using a lot... now they are out more often that i put their blankets on.

Bay looks like he is smiling in his new blanket. Cyn and your hubby are too funny. My mare does the same thing. She points when she wants to be scratched in those "hard to reach?" places.

I blanket mine when the weather is around 40 or so. Below 40 everyone gets a blanket, between 40 & 45, if it is windy my older gelding gets his blanket, and around 50 I blanket my older mare. She loves her blanket and will move over just to make sure it is adjusted right. So I do it, as to there individual needs. I have three 10 or under, and two much older ones.

Bay sure is still very handsome for his age. He has a very nice head without that extreme Arabian features, very nice. He's nice and cozy now that's for sure.

Warmly, Stacy
