So after my replies to Remali's headache thread where I went to the walk-in clinic and got some meds for my week long head ache, I was doing pretty good.... or so I thought.
I woke up Friday morning around 7am with severe upper abdominal pain. I took some Pepto and went back to sleep. Woke up again at 9 and gave the Dr. a call to see about the possibilities of interactions or side effects. Didn't get a call back so I finally called my mom. She decided to drive up from Tampa to Gainesville and if I was still in pain, we would go to the hospital. I talked to the DR. around 3pm and they told me to eat some yogurt. I did that with no chance. Finally called my mom at 3:30 and told her I was calling an ambulance.
From there I was rushed to the hospital and triaged and put in the waiting room where I began experiencing naseau, vomitting and severe pain through my left chest and into my left shoulder. I laid in the ER screaming for a while with my mom until they finally gave me some morphine. That didn't last very long so they started giving me some thing stronger called Dilaudid which worked VERY well! I got an abdominal x-ray and bloodwork. X-ray showed nothing and they bloodwork was really weird. My blood came out looking like a strawberry milkshake and they couldn't use it. It was so odd. It was literally milky with white streaks through it. This was a result of high cholesterol, lipids and triglycerides. Got a catscan with contrast dye which showed an enflamed pancreas. Because of my still persistent shoulder and neck pain, they began to suspect a blood clot. They decided to do another catscan with dye, but had to run it by us first because using more dye could cause my kidneys to fail but not doing it could kill me. It was a very scary moment. The nurses were all super, super nice though and helped me through it.
We got those scans back and no blood clots but my final diagnosis was DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) with pancreatitis. I was transferred across the street to one of the ICU units (they call it CCU - critical care unit)so not the bad one, but still not good. I've been stuck here ever since. I was finally allowed to eat some chicken broth and jello today after not eating since Friday. They've been trying to get my blood sugar under sontrol for the most part. I've also been having trouble with my respiration aand heart rate so they're monitoring those as well. My mom is still here but I can't have any visitors in this unit. I was supposed to get moved to a regular hospital unit today, but my sugar went crazy again so that didn't happen. Maybe tomorrow!
So this is my crazy update now that I'm feeling well enough to sit up and off the pain-killers enough that I can keep my eyes open.... It's actually been a pretty scary situation and stressful as well. I'm supposed to start final exams tomorrow so that's obviously not happening. I also have all sorts of appointments to cancel and reschedule so I'm not looking forward to that at all.....
