Hi there

I'm looking for resume help, I looked online again and got the gist and wrote one while in high school, they had a whole day for writing resumes and such. I'm doing the bullet style listing my objective, education, skills, experience and activities I've done but I feel like there's something missing..how do I add in what college classes I've taken? And can someone simply explain to me what a cover letter is supposed to do? I looked that up too but left going 'huh?'.

So if ANY advice is given I'd surely appreciate. I'm looking at getting a customer service/reception/time job. Trying to stay away from food since I've already been there multiple times and wayyyy too long.

Thanks!

You college classes should be under the education portion before your highschool and what not, you may also want to put referances on there.

I think websites such as careerbuilder.com or monster.com will help you create a resume given your work history. I used to work in HR/payroll and reviewed resumes and I never saw too many bullet point style resumes. I don't like the chronological style either because if your best experience isn't recent, the employer has to search for it.

You can put your classes right on top after your name and address if you like. Its ok to list 3 - 4 classes there if you want. I recently added my education to the top of mine - it wasn't even on there before but I am not looking for employment in my major.

You can email me a copy if you like.

Kzeiger, my advice is - Unless you're going for an executive level postion stay with the traditional style resume, this is what most employers see and are use to reading; they understand the format. Ie. Name, address and no more than 2 contact numbers you can include an email address. NEXT, if you use a cover letter do not add an objective. If no cover letter create an objective 5 to 7 lines that sumamrize who you are and what you want from a work related/professional stand point. NEXT, your work history most recent going backwards 7 to 10 years. Bullet points are prefectly fine - be sure to include 3 or 4 key elements of your job responsilities. Provide the company name, address, and a phone number. NEXT formal education College, high school or trade school. THEN you can add any specialized training / seminars etc that you have attended.
NEXT Special skills that you have that set you apart, IE bilingual, computer skills, OSHA 30hr trained, CPR training, forklift operation card. Something that says hire me look at the great things I already possess and can bring to your business. NEXT license and Organiztions If you have a drivers license let them know, if you belong to a union, have a city health card, etc. *References and copies of training/certifications are always available upon request. Do not inculde them with your resume or application.
Use standard type 12 font, no colors, no pictures, resume quality paper white or off white. Your resume should not be 2 full pages - cover letter may make it 3 pgs.

Hope this helps;)

My recommnedation would be to keep it short and sweet. Use the main stuff you want focused on. The wordy 2-3 page long resumes that come to my work are very wordy and usually could have gotten the job done in one page. Keep in mind you want them to pay attention to your application. Make your different sections bold and caps when you type. Then list things you have done in a short style. Dont' get majorly wordy about what you have done at each job, most jobs can be summed up in a few words.:)

Two words for the resume, spell check!!

YOu would be amazed!!;)
