My Moosie, our little chihuahua, has been scratching himself raw all over his body. We can't find any fleas so I'm not sure what the trigger is. Gave him a medicated bath but still no relief. I was wondering if I could give him Benadryl. He weighs about 11 lbs. How much would I give him. I have the pink tablets. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

"Benadryl Dosage and Side Effects For Dogs
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an anti-histamine medication that's given to dogs to treat allergic reactions that include itching and swelling.
The most common Benadryl dosage for dogs is 1 mg per each 1 pound of body weight, therefore a 20-pound dog would receive a 20 mg dose of Benadryl. Benadryl should be given to the dog every 12 hours.
Drowsiness is the most common side-effect seen in a dog who has been given Benadryl."

Yes, you can give benadryl. They actually require and tolerate a higher relative dose than we do, and it can be given daily if needed. We gave it daily to our hyper-allergic dog for a few years.
Tachete seems to give a good dose to start with... depends on the mg of your tablets.

I give them to Little Bear for the same reason. I think he is allergic to something outside, and he will scratch and scratch. The bendadryl seems to give him relief when the baths don't. He weighs right at 12 lbs, I give him one pill, can't remember the mgs.

Gus is a really large German Shorhair Pointer and when he got stung by a bumbly bee, he was given Benedryl by the vet. I keep some on hand in the summer because he goes after those things with a vengence.

Thanks everyone I gave him half a 25 mg. pill. Try getting a pill down a mean and nasty chihuahua is no small feat! I put it in chicken, then ham and then cheese but finally got it down. We'll see how he does. Maybe if he gets really drowsy, I'll clip his toenails!;)

Didn't think of that! I'll try that next time. Thanks for the tip.

Peanut Butter or hot dogs work wonders, or cheese.
Thats what we use at work unless a client brings something special for their dog to take meds with.

How has the helped? I give one to Sadie every once in a while when she gets really dry skin and scratches a lot.

I have a 100 pound, 2 year old, American Bulldog who is pretty much allergic to everything. We give him a 100 mg dose of Benedryl twice a day and 100 mg of Hydroxyzine twice a day. Those are the vets orders. He does a little better with them, but still has issues. We also give him an imuno-therapy shot once a week. We got him tested for the shots. Here is a picture of my baby Peanut!

He was still scratching pretty much yesterday. This morning, I gave him a 25 mg. The peanut butter worked like a charm! I'll let you know if this dosage works better. Thanks all.
