Gizzy, my husbands truck dog, is used to riding in the back seat of the pick up.
We now have an SUV, and I purchased one of those wire things that you put in them, to keep him in the very back. He now sits behind the back seats. Remember, Gizzy LOVES to come home, and knows the routine. We go by by in SUV to go to Semi, then we go to SUV to go home. IF the back door to the back seat is open, Gizzy will jump in there, and does not like to come out to get in the very back.
Bob told me that he had an episode with Gizzy tonight. Said Gizzy got in the back seat, and when he reached for his collar to pull him out, Gizzy snapped at him. Bob then smacked his nose, then Gizzy growled. I am now finding out this has happened once before. They are ok, and they made up and Gizzy is in the very back of the SUV.
What I am wondering is, with Gizzy so used to the seats, should we put a cover on them and let him have that place, what he is used to, or, as Bob mentioned to me, that when Gizzy gets out of the Semi, to have only the rear door to the back of the SUV open, that way he jumps right in where he should be.
IF Gizzy gets the seats, then Bob can use the back of the SUV for his stuff, and I think it would be easier for him to get his things in and out of, instead of him having his things in the back seat and having to get them in and out.
Gotta make it happy for both of them in this situation.
Gizzy is a great dog, just making a new adjustment, its hard on him. He has had the same routine sence he was a pup, and now we've changed it.
What would you do to make this a win win situation? Im voting for Gizzy to have the back seat.

Make that 2 votes for Gizzy to have the back seat. If you don't mind getting a cover and having him back there AND you think it would be easier for Hubby to get his things out of the back. Sounds like a win-win to me!

I'd vote for Gizzy to have the back seat too. It just sounds easier for everyone.

it's a tough situation.....I myself see no problem with them riding in the seats mine do.....but then there are those that will argue that a crate is safer.....

I'll talk to hubby when he gets home, after my initial attack of the killer tougne lashing Gizzy has to give me.
He is mommas dog when home...lol, but he loves his daddy. Poor Bob, everyone loves momma.
I have dog print blankets, that we had in the truck, those will work wonderfully.

Ya, we dont crate our dogs in the vehicle either. It was just the set up for him to have the run of the back of the SUV, and he dont like it I guess.
He stays in the back seats, we've never had a problem with that in the truck. He liked it, or he would ride in the back of the truck(it had a canopy)depending on weather. Im thinking its just that he has no human contact back there. Is locked away from his daddy. He wants to be able to be near him. Hes a lover, and a ham..lol

My fat cattle dog sits on my lap when I drive. :D If I need her to move she will but she likes it there the best.

Boy, that was easy. I said hay, he said ya, then went on to tell me how Gizzy dosnt like it back there, so I get to rearrange his vehicle tomorrow. Take blankets out of back, put doggy ones in the seat.
Hes a happy boy. This is him 5 min after being home...lol

Thanks Carla. Bobs a good daddy too, he was on our team right away.
What ever works to make them both happy. They are the money workers in the family.
Bob driving, and Gizzy a companion, and on guard.

The case of growling/snapping sounds very much like "couch or bed aggression". Have you heard of that? That's why our dog is never on either couch or bed. We just don't want to ever go there...

I'd have read him the riot act for the growling bit... but if it's just as easy for him to ride in the back seat, I'd probably let him do that. :)

Gizzy did get smacked for the snapp and growling, so that was handled right then. Gizzy has to be transported back and forth to do his job. Bob admits he did not handle the situation correctly, but with the change in plans, there should not be an issue again.

I dog train field hunting dogs besides owning my own. All dogs are in crates to protect them as well as me.
I am so adameant about their protection , I only haul in a burb because of their is even the slightest carbon issues coming into the vehicle Iwant to know about it.
Dogs have died from riding in back of pickup trucks and campers without their owners or trainers knowing that there was a leak.

When I had an suv my dogs always had to ride in the cargo area. They knew that they had better not dare try and sit on my seats. Now that I have the truck they are spoiled and get to ride on the seats since there is no enclosed cargo area. ( I get nervous at the throught of them in the bed of the pickup, although they would probably love it!)

Long story short, I don't know why I was ever so protective of my seats. The dogs haven't harmed the seats in my truck at all and it's leather so all I do is wipe the hair off. Let Gizzy have the seat!

Ya, Gizzy is happy. I put his blanket on the seat. They are leather, why I didnt want him on them before. But his happiness is more important, and I put another blanket under his blanket.
As far as my dogs riding in the back of the truck, that ONLY happens with a camper shell, or tied in. I hate seeing dogs ride loose in trucks. Seen them almost fall out of them, or off flat beds, and yes, even ready to jump. What would happen IF you had to swerve and the dog was on that side...oh, dont even like to think about it.

Vicky I think, IMO, its more of a personal preference. Which ever you want your dog to go you should make him go. My one dog is scared to death to ride in the "bed" of the truck. My other dog would ride back there all day long. My dogs when they are inside the vehicle they are in the back seat & back seat only. ( I have a pick up truck) NO front seats for them!

I think the back seat is great for dogs, that is where my two dogs ride....but the back of an open pick up truck is dangerous....and being tied up even more dangerous, the dog could get hung up, or hang himself, or killed if a crash happened. Also, I would never hit or "smack" a dog, that just causes more aggression.

I have to disagree. Kind of like horses, you have to know what the situation is.
If a horse comes at you, you come back as the Alpha and now.
If a dog growls in anger, you need to make pack leader and now.
Im not talking about beating a dog.
If a horse bites out at you, you smack him on the nose.
If a dog growls in anger, you smack him on the nose.
Your not hurting him, your taking back your place as alpha.
Gizzy getting his nose smacked, did not hurt him, especially knowing Bob, he probably tapped him.
Gizzy should not of growled at Bob in anger.
Situation is all good, Gizzy now has the back seat all to himself, and Bob has the back of the SUV.

As far as tieing in the back of a truck. I would hope people tie there dogs in a fashion so they would not get tangled up. Mine ride in the back seat, unless the canopy is on. I quit tieing yrs ago, why the canopy was bought. But now that I need the bed for hay, they ride in the back seat. Darn dogs do NOT know how to vacuum. They make me do it.

I agree with Vick - I also do not advocate beating dogs or anything, but all of mine know that a good smack on the nose means I am not playing anymore ;) Seems to hurt their feelings more than anything
