Guys I know that a lot of you are against breeding right now with the way the horse industry is. But I wanted to tell you guys that my girl Prancing Timid aka PT is due very soon. I am so excited been checking her udder everyday to see if there is any milk. Got off of work this morning and she has some milk. Her due date is Feb. 10, 2010. She is a gray mare bred to my sorrel and white stallion. She has had 3 other foals. There colors were bay, buckskin, and palomino. I am not sure what color we will get out of this breeding. This is the first time that she has been bred to our stud Sky. IF you look in the siggy thread by Fjords you will see the sire of the foal. She is a registered paint just like Sky. Here is a pic of her. In this pic she was 3 months along. I will take some new pics of her tomorrow or the next day I have off which is Thursday.

Palogal I am so excited about this breeding. She is nicely bred and could of showed but that is my plan for baby. Maybe I will let Baywind help me name the foal as long as hubby says its alright. This foal we plan on keeping I am pretty sure.

Here is some other pics of her. these pics are her at 9 months preggo. Enjoy. I will get some more pic Thursday once I groom her more. She is extremely dirty right now. She is enjoying I think rolling in the mud and getting as dirty as possible.

Guys it very funny she is my only horse that nickers at me when she sees me and when it is either breakfast or dinner. Caddo does nicker from time to time but PT does it everyday. I hope that her foal is just as vocal. I adore vocal horses. If someone once to they can look at Sky pedigree on www.allbreedpedigree.com His great grandma was a national champion. Her name was Cherokee Maiden. Her son is on his papers Hank-a-chief. He was a very well known horse in APHA. I am planning on showing this young foal once it arrives and I can do some handling.

Oh, good! A foal to look forward to!
Do you think PT will be calm enough to take pics and/or video of the birth, or at least right after? It's been years since I've seen a foal born!
CaddoCinnamon
01-19-2010, 07:22 AM
Yeah I think so. She is calm I hope that I can take a video of maybe her having it but if not then I will take video of the foal right after. I might be too busy during the birth to actually video. I am just hoping that I am off of work the night that she decides to have it.
Gypsy Rose
01-19-2010, 07:49 AM
I hope so! That would be so cool to see video, and you sure don't want ot miss that birth!

Yeah I know. I haven't missed one yet. Except for Cutter's.

Looking back at the calendar I am within 20 days of a new foal. Her due date is Feb. 10, 2010. The bad thing is I am supposed to be at work that night.

Well if she's taking votes, I vote for gray paint. I think they're purdy.
CaddoCinnamon
01-20-2010, 05:56 AM
I am hoping that it is a gray paint. I don;t really care if it is a stud or a filly as long as we have a healthy foal that is all I care about. The foal I believe has moved underneath her more. She isn't as wide as she was yesterday.

hmmm I vote for a grey paint filly. I like the girls :)

OO can't wait to see baby pictures .. :) Both parents are pretty. I bet they will have a nice foal together. Maybe she will hold off for Valentine day. :) UGH ! I understand about the mud we are having lots of it right now. My horses look like mud balls. :)
CaddoCinnamon
01-20-2010, 09:40 AM
Yeah so is she. I turned them out this morning and she just had to find the muddiest hole there was and decided to roll in it. I will be glad when I have off a couple of days so that I can groom her.
Palogal
01-20-2010, 09:42 AM
That's what grays do, they don't gray until later. If she's born black, she'll most likely gray out and eventually be white.
CaddoCinnamon
01-20-2010, 09:43 AM
That would be great. Actually PT's mom was a gray like her and PT sire is a sorrel. I am hoping since she is a gray and Sky is a sorrel and white then I have a good chance of getting a gray horse I hope.

I think it is saying gray tobiano 8.33%
gray black 8.33%
Guys grays have a base coat. She has produced a bay, buckskin, and palomino so really what is going to be her base coat.
CaddoCinnamon
01-20-2010, 12:59 PM
I am hoping that the rain has washed her some.

Guys grays have a base coat. She has produced a bay, buckskin, and palomino so really what is going to be her base coat.
That depends on what she carries. What is her base color? Does she carry the bay gene? Does she carry creme? If she doesn't carry creme and she produced a palomino and a buckskin, she carries red.
CaddoCinnamon
01-20-2010, 03:45 PM
No she doesn't carry the creme. The buckskin and palomino came from my vets stallion. He is a palomino the golden copper color which I love. I will put a red base coat then.
CaddoCinnamon
01-20-2010, 03:47 PM
It reads like this 25% gray chestnut tobiano
25% gray chestnut
25% chestnut
25% bay
Palogal
01-20-2010, 06:11 PM
So then you have to determine if she carries the bay gene (Agouti) The palomino could have carried it or her. That gene makes buckskins (diluted bays) and bays.
CaddoCinnamon
01-21-2010, 05:21 AM
That I wouldn't know. I will have to ask my vet.
Palogal
01-21-2010, 06:42 AM
your vet would not know unless you've had genetics testing done on her.
CaddoCinnamon
01-21-2010, 08:30 AM
Palogal she would know because PT used to be her horse. I have only had PT for the last year and half. My vet has owned her since she was a yearling. That is why I said that I would have to ask her.
CaddoCinnamon
01-22-2010, 05:22 PM
We gave PT her last round of shots. It is a 5 way that will protect her and the baby. 17 days and counting now. Her milk is starting to come in and I will start sleeping down at the barn in about a week. I hope all goes well with her and baby.
Gypsy Rose

Only a few weeks to go!
CaddoCinnamon
01-23-2010, 08:21 AM
Yeah I am excited but scared at the same time. She has twinned before and a mare sky bred had twins this year and both dies. She is as big as that mare. My vet is on standby since she knows this mare really well. She ought to since it was her mare for 11 years until she let me have her. She thinks that she is either caring a really big foal or it could be twins. Sky's foal have all been over 100 lbs at birth. Time will tell. I am going through all of my stuff to make sure that I am well prepared. I have a foaling kit bag that I keep everything in so all I have to do now is go through it and make sure I have everything I need. I am also rereading the The Foaling Primer book just to make sure that all of my basis have been covered. I can't wait until she has it. I am thinking about giving her a bath today. She is extremely dirty but all i have is cold water. It is supposed to be 62 degrees so I just might do it anyway. thanks for taking an interest in this mare. She is my pride and joy. She saw PT as well this morning and said that she is looking good. She palpated her and said that everything is good. The baby has turned. She doesn't think that we will go to the 10th. She is thinking in about 11 days we will have one on the ground.
Gypsy Rose
01-23-2010, 11:24 AM
If the foal has turned, she's probably right!
It's funny, because I'm not even there, but I'm getting excited, lol!
CaddoCinnamon
01-23-2010, 05:43 PM
Yeah me to. I gave her a bath and she looks worlds different than when I started her this morning. She is really starting to swishing her tail a lot more today but I don't think tonight checked her udder and more milk than yesterday but it still isn't full. I am thinking more like the 2nd of February for her due date.
Palogal
01-23-2010, 06:37 PM
I hope it's just one big one!!! Twins rarely survive and that's a real bummer. <Crosses fingers> I'm getting excited to!
CaddoCinnamon
01-23-2010, 06:43 PM
They do but you have to catch birth. Unfortunately that doesn't happen very often. I am going to do everything in my power to be there for her. I would think though since my vet palpated her and she only felt one then we should be in the clear of having twins but either way I will be there for her.
CaddoCinnamon
01-23-2010, 07:03 PM
Here are some pics of her. She is 16 days out now. It is hard waiting on baby.
Gypsy Rose
01-23-2010, 07:55 PM
Defnitely looks like there's a foal in there, that's for sure!
CaddoCinnamon
01-23-2010, 08:02 PM
Yeah I just checked on her and all is well right now. She snorted at me like usual like can I have more hay mom I am out. I picked her stall tonight also since I was down there. I will start checking on her in the morning when I feed, at night when I feed her, and right before I go to bed. Her milk sac is really starting to develop now just a waiting game now. I think that she is tired of being pregnant. She looks so tired sometimes I feel sorry for her.
Gypsy Rose
01-24-2010, 07:52 AM
This waiting game always drives a person up a wall.....
CaddoCinnamon
01-24-2010, 09:09 AM
Yeah I hate the waiting game. I wonder though will it be a stud colt or a filly. I had one filly and one stud last year. Sky will have 2 foals on the ground this year. PT's and Taylor Made Design. Right now he is 3 colts and 2 fillies. I am not counting the ones we lost last year out of Sky. With that stastic I want a filly.
Gypsy Rose
01-24-2010, 10:40 AM
I love fillies and mares, myself. Geldings are great, but you just can't match the personality that a mare has, lol!
Some people say that mares are not for everyone, just like stallions, and sometimes, I think there's a bit of truth to that, lol! Makes life interesting.
CaddoCinnamon
01-24-2010, 12:12 PM
Yeah it does. I am afraid of geldings and stallions because of the accident I had with a stud. I have always been afraid of them not mares but I am thankful that Caddo is a stud colt because I have had to interact with him everyday and because of that I am slowly getting over my fear of stallions and geldings. I am actually getting more involved with Sky because of it.

Getting very close guys here is a pic of her udder that I took today. She is 322 days along now. Lets play a game guess how much longer and post it when you think she might go.
CaddoCinnamon
01-26-2010, 06:20 AM
Guys I believe that we will have a foal by the weekend if not tonight. Her udder is just about as full as it can get. A lot fuller today thank yesterday. I am hoping that she kinda waits until Thursday so that I can help her with it. Her milk is coming in fast. I am having to redo a foaling stall for her. The stall that I had fixed for the foaling stall for some reason is staying to wet so I am going to make another foaling stall today. I just have to make a few minor revisions to the stall. I am excited but scared at the same time. Keep PT in your all prayers and me because this is trying right now because I could lose her or the foal and I don't want that. Pray that I can keep my nerve. She is taking it all in stride. The other reason why I think that she will go very soon is because her udder is very hard right now and dense.
Gypsy Rose
01-26-2010, 08:16 AM
Has she waxed yet?
CaddoCinnamon
01-26-2010, 11:01 AM
No not yet but some mares don't. I am not sure about her though. I just put a bale of straw down in her stall. Redid the foaling stall for her. She is acting anxious now. This is not very common of her. She really isn't eating her hay now. She has been switching her tail a lot today. Her udder still needs a little bit more milk in it but I can squeeze some out so she is very close. I am watching for the waxing. Her tail head is extremely loose now. She just looks ready the baby is under her where it needs to be. Hopefully in the next couple of days we will have a foal I believe. She is set so it is just a matter of when she wants to go.
Gypsy Rose

IT is just her still. I ma glad though because I have to work tonight and possibly Thursday night but hopefully I will get to see the birth of the foal. If the cancel me Thursday night I will be sleeping in the barn over the weekend. I am so excited the closer she gets the more excited I am getting. My hubby said that if it is a stud colt the name will be Impressive Sky but if she has a filly this forum gets to name her. Don't tell my hubby I am hoping for a filly!!!!

She still might go tonight. I checked her when I got home from work this morning and PT who is a really sweet mare always loving and gentle didn't want anything to do with me this morning and actually when I felt of her udder this morning she tried to kick. I think that she is very sore right now. She is looking more and more tired as the days go by. She is 330 days now. Cinnamon Caddo's mom had him at 335 days. Her udder still isn't all the way full yet so maybe tonight. Hopefully by Monday I am hoping for a foal. Everything is ready now just for it to get here.

I think once she is bagged up, she will start to drip a clear fluid that will turn white... and about 24 hours before foaling the fluid turns sticky and creamy (this is the colostrum).
Some mares wax up, and some don't..... Or so my friends who breed have always said....
Good luck..... I can't wait!

01-30-2010, 08:54 PM
Nothing yet but when I checked he udder tonight you could see the baby kicking the daylights out of her. I felt sorry for her because if that is any indication of the baby then she is gonna have her hands full once it hits the ground. She is tired more but seems great over all. A very active baby.

Yeah I am sure she does but it was so funny to see it kicking her like that. Nothing yet, but I just did another look at my calendar to see and make sure that my due date was right and I think that I was off her due if officially the 15 of Feb. We just might have a Valentine's baby. Either way we 14 days I am saying till she foals.

CaddoCinnamon
02-01-2010, 10:15 AM
Yeah that would be great. I talked to my vet since Boots was there this morning and she asked anything yet. I told her no so she is on standby so if I call into the office it goes right to her phone which is great. She is just as excited about this baby because she said that she might breed to Sky with one of her mares. She will be out to give exams and floatings once the baby arrives. I told her I want her to do a wellness exam on the baby once it arrives to make sure that everything is good.
Gypsy Rose
02-01-2010, 11:43 AM
That's always a good idea. That way, you can be sure your mare has passed all of the placenta, as well, though I imagine you already know how to check that.

She does have an edema now which she didn't have this morning. It might be a couple more days or tonight. I am leaning toward the early part of the week.

I am getting worried now because her stool today is very loose. I called my vet and she said to deworm her again. She was dewormed 4 weeks ago. Dee didn't have loose stool before she foaled as far as I can remember anyway. I am going to do what she said and do it anyway but I don't think that is it. She is acting like she is hurting. She hasn't touched her hay from this morning. Normally she is a chow hound. I hope nothing happens while I am at work tonight. I am scared though.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it a lot. She didn't have it but I still have a couple of more days before her due date. I turned her out today with my other mares and foals. She is walking around like in a daze and she keeps looking at her sides so maybe soon. I will be glad when this is over. I won't have to worry about it for a while. She won't be bred again until the foal is a yearling. I don't breed my mares every year. I give them each a year off of being bred. They actually have 2 years between them having their foals. Dee might be bred in late April for an early spring foal. I don't think I will breed my mares again for a winter foal. Too cold on them and me I think. Her stool has returned to normal now maybe just an off day. Thanks for the thoughts guys. I guess maybe I worry too much when it comes to my mares. To me they are more than horses they are like my children. Since I have no daughters of my own they are my daughters.

02-11-2010, 06:15 AM
Yes it is very frustrating. Still no foal when I checked her this morning. She is getting tired I think though she had her head resting on her stall. It was cute. The baby is still moving somewhat. I think this baby is going to weigh at least a 110lbs at birth. I will be surprised if it weighs less than that. I put my hand on her stomach to see if I could still feel the baby since it isn't as active right now. It kicked my hand so it is still alive. I have heard of foals dying within 24 hours of being born. So I worry about this until the baby is safely delivered. There is a moon change this weekend maybe she will have it then I hope.

Got back from spending an hour with her. Cleaned her stall really good and put down 3/4 of a bale to replace what I took out. She is putting her head down an like nesting trying to find a place I guess. I brushed her and she leaned into the brush like it felt really good to her. No wax yet on the teats but still she might go. She hasn't eaten any of her hay from this morning or this evening. She did however eat her grain but I wish that she would eat her hay because it would help her to stay warm tonight. I tought it was funny tough all of the other horses ae standing at the front of their stalls and looking down towards PT like are you going to have it tonight maybe they know.

Yeah believe you me I am wanting this baby born too. I was right on when it came to Dee having her baby. PT has gotten me very puzzled because all the signs are there and still nothing. I guess I will just keep watching her. I am ready to scream now. I have thought that if she doesn't have it by the 16 then I will have Valerie my vet come out and induce her. She is so big now I am just hoping that the foal survives and the mare as well. I have talked to her today and she said to let her go to her due date then if she hasn't delivered by then she will induce her.
zoel_222
02-12-2010, 05:47 PM
I don't know about having to induce her. When she's ready she'll have it, just let nature run its course. Just be patient. She hasn't even hit her due date yet.

02-13-2010, 07:35 AM
Yes I know that but my vet who used to have this mare said that she should go on her due date or before. My main worry right now is the fact that my stallion is not known to produce low weight birth foals by that I mean normally a foal weighs between 90 to 95 lbs. Sky produces foals that have weighed between 100 and 115 lbs at birth. The other thing that concerns me is the fact that she has a dropped hip. I am not sure if this will have any affect on the delivery of the foal. NO movement for 2 days now. I called the vet to ask them about it they told me not to worry about it because when the foal turns to get into position then the baby is getting parallel to the dams spine getting ready to be born. They did suggest to keep her up and just do some hand walkiing with her because she could go anytime and they don't want it born in the snow. I slept in the barn last night she was up and down very uncomfortable. When we breed her again next year I won't be as apprehensive about it because I will know more of when she has it. Like Dee I know she has her at 341 days my mare Cinnamon always had hers at 335 days. This is PT 4th foal but the first one for me and my husband. I had a dream though that she was born black at birth. I hope it is because more than likely she will gray out it gets older. Thanks guys for trying to help with my nerves. I am nervous when it comes closer to the end because I know that I could lose my mare. My hubby and I have already decided that if something happens to the foal then everything goes into getting the mare safe and sound. I unfortunately will be nervous until she passes all of the placenta and the foal has passed the meconium as well.

Thanks for that I hope so too. She is like my daughter since all I have is boys. I can't have no more children because of complications that I had with my youngest. My mares take that spot and that is why I try my best to give them the very best care when they are preggo and nursing their foals. I will be glad when it is over.

Guys I am calling my vet out to make sure that everything is going good. Due date is here and still no foal. I am mainly doing this for peace of mind. I asked her this morning if she comes early or late and her reply was that she has gone early and has gone 5 days past due. So now I made the decision for her to come out so we will both know where she stands. She usually charges 110 and she is charging me 80 dollars to come out so I am grateful for that. I just hope that everything is normally and proceeding like it should. She understands why I am nervous with this being her first foal for me. This is actually her 4th foal to have. But I am thinking it is better to be safe than sorry.

so the baby is a big baby? Is the vet worried about it? How old is you mare?
Sorry if I'm asking questions already answered.. I just skimmed through it.
Having a big baby isn't always going to be terrible, we had a big baby, she got stuck at her shoulders and we had to pull her out. Mommy and baby where both perfectly fine and healthy.
I'm sure everything will be fine just make sure someone is around to help and watch when the baby is born encase she does need help.

I don't know if I answered these questions or not so here goes.
PT is a 13 year olod paint mare. She has had 3 foals before. This is the first one for me out of my stallion. She has had no problems before with delivering. My problem is that most foals weigh between 90 to 95 lbs at birth. Sky's foals have weighed between 100 to 115 lbs at birth. She is overdue now. Her due date was the 15th. She is thinking that the foal will weigh close to 120 lbs at birth and the longer they deviate from their due dates the more chance of something going wrong. This mare has gone over her due date before. She has gone early once. So this is why it has got us both apprehensive with her. We have talked about inducing her because of how big the foal is. I am going to talk to her again and find out wha to do for sure.

Guys here is an update on PT. I am having Valerie my vet come out and palpate her again today. She is coming out this morning to do another palpation and if the baby is in the birth canal then we are going to induce. I am scared because I have never had a mare induced before. Please don't bash me on this. I am needing support right now with this decision. Mainly because of the fact that she was straining and pushing and rolling a lot last night and just seems very uncomfortable. I know tat when they roll a lot they are moving the baby into position. She is now 5 days over due and I am concerned that I could lose my mare and my foal on this one. Please keep me in your prayers as I go through this. It is scary because out of all broodmares I have a special bond with PT. Thanks guys for listening to my rant.
Gypsy Rose
02-20-2010, 05:55 AM
I don't think anyone's going to bash you on this! From what you've told us about the size of the foal, and the fact that she's so uncomfortable and may be having contractions, you're far better off having the vet out anyways. Since Valerie's so familiar with PT, I'm sure that if she thought it unwise to induce, she would have told you so.
Good luck, and please keep us posted! I'll be popping in and out all day awaiting updates.

I know you're doing this with your vet but I highly advise against inducing mares. They are not like humans. Sonora was a month late and if I'd induced her she wouldn't have made it. She was dysmmature at birth and needed that extra time to finish cooking. . .she was EXTREMELY tiny and looked like a premature baby at a month late. .
CaddoCinnamon
02-20-2010, 06:38 AM
I know what you mean there but from what my vet is telling me this foal is going to weigh close to 120 lbs at birth. The other reason we have decided to induce her is because the longer she goes the bigger the foal gets. I won't induce her unless my vet and I are confident that we won't lose either one. If that decision has to be made the mare unfortunately will be the one I save. Another reason is also PT has only given birth to foals that way under 100lbs. This is going to be the first foal that has weighed over 100 lbs. Sky has produced foals weighing at birth from 100 to 115 lbs. None of his foals have weighed the 90 to 95 lbs like most foals.

02-20-2010, 06:56 AM
Sorry but I am going to be blunt. This is retarded to induce PT. If she has had a foal before then just leave her be. That baby isn't going to get to big for her. Just have some pacients horses don't have due dates they have estimations. Inducing horses is the worst idea if the foal is still viable. Again just leave her be.
Just thought I would add. When pearl had Jorie she weighted 100 lbs. And tucker weighted 120 lbs. and she had him without complications.
CaddoCinnamon
02-20-2010, 07:15 AM
I understand that but I also have to deal with the fact that she has a dropped hip that will play into this. My vet used to own this mare and that is why I have asked her what she would do with PT now. She has had to be induced once before everything was fine. My vet and I are only thinking of the possibilities for PT and her foal. The foal is still alive I think. It was Monday anyway but it has gotten quiet again. I know a lot of people don't like this idea but honestly I am doing my best for this mare. Because of her going over and having trouble most likely she won't be bred again just a lawn ornament for me to play with. Valerie wouldn't of suggested it if she didn't think we might need to do it.

For one thing, CaddoCinnamon will be following the advice of her vet. For another, if you have followed the thread from the beginning, her vet is very familiar with this mare. This is not a "first time the vet's dealt with this horse" pregnancy.
Also, if it came to a choice, and she could choose only one, she would save the mare.
