I went on my ride this afternoon/evening with farmers_wife and her neighbor Mike (?). We had one big hairy accident, but we're all in one piece. I'll let her tell that story if she wants to share it.
Over all it was a WONDERFUL ride and we had a great time. :D
I also got to try Rashad's new blanket on him, so I thought I'd share my pictures. I took them on my husband's phone though, so it might take some time to get them uploaded.

How is Rashad doing? Can't wait to see him all dressed up in his blanket. Sorry about the accident whatever it was, but at least you're all okay. :)

I was the excitement today. I saddled up Dolly and put a buddy seat on her for my 5yr old. Dolly never had a buddy seat before but has ridden double. So shelby gets on (with her helmet) and off we go. We ride around the pasture and then we go into the pasture. Everything is going good, all is happy. Well here is where the excitement happens. I was going down a hill and Dolly started bucking. YES, with me and shelby. I fly off over here head and shelby stays on. She is ok and did not even cry. Well for me I am a little bruised, some scratches and wet pants. No laughing. At first I did not know if it was pee or blood. I think my private hit the horn. But it was pee. stop laughing..... I am ok and shelby is ok and rode Mikes horse with him. I do not know what happened but she was good the rest of the ride. Things could of been worse. It was a nice ride after that.

Huh... maybe lunge her some with that buddy seat as floppy and bouncy as you can make it, and make her tolerate it. No bucking. Not sure if there's a good way to weight it a bit or not.
As a safety procedure, I'd practice reaching around and swinging your daughter down off the horse while spurring the horse the other way. I've done this with kids. If the horse gets squirrelly, it needs to be a reflex. It's nice to be able to swing them clear, having you come off and the kid still on could have been a bad scene.

Wow! I'm glad you both came out of that okay! That could have been nasty.
Long story short, I agree with everything WB said.

Glad you weren't hurt too bad and your daughter stayed on. I think WB has a good idea of lunging with the buddy seat to see if that makes her more comfortable.
Sounds like it was an okay time the rest of the day though. Will check back for pictures!

HEY - I have had a few pee shakers in my day!! Not this year, but nearly every time that I have fallen off Ginger I pee my pants. Its part of being old and over 40 if you ask me, no different than sneezing and peeing...which I do a lot. Weak muscles!!

swms - I think you need to snug those blanket straps right up to his belly or he can get a foot in them when he lays down. Not cinch tight, but definitely touching his belly. See where Cyn's back foot is?

Sorry to hear about you getting bucked off but glad no one got really hurt.
I trained my horses to ride with the buddyseat also. I would work them in the round pen with it first then I would ride in it myself. Just slide in back so the horse felt the weight. Once I knew my horse was okay with the weight/saddle, I would put my daughter in the saddle and ride in the arena.

I guess Faith will have to tighten them when she puts the blanket on him. (waves at Farmers-is that okay?) He currently neekid since it's been pretty warm. I did error on the larger size when I ordered. Do you think it looks way to big in other areas? The front is definitely tightened down as far as possible. :D

It looks just fine if the belly straps are snugged up. :)
If they won't go tight enough, either find someone who sews, or tie a knot in them. :) It's no good at all to leave them loose enough to snag on something.

We are all ok. I agree with WB. Dolly has had saddle bags on the back of her loaded and banging against her. Shewasmyshadow rode double with me. Not sure what happened. Just glad that we are safe. I would not of put shelby on Dolly if I did not think she was safe. Just one of those feak accident.

Rashad looks beautiful in his new winter coat!
So sorry to hear about the scary accident Faith! I'm sure the lunging with the buddyseat can only help but I have to wonder about the hill part of it since you said Dolly was fine up until then. It probably felt a bit weird to her to have to tuck her rump to go downhill and have someone sitting on it! Not sure how you can prepare her for that? (I could be totally wrong but it's the first thing that comes to mind since I have a horse that isn't a fan of down hill to begin with - I can only imagine how all hell would break loose if there was someone back further on him. :()

That was my thought also. It could of felt weird to her.

Isn't Dolly 17 or 18 yrs old? I wonder what got into her? Just goes to show, no horse is fool proof. Glad no one was hurt seriously, except for your pride of course.
I give my 75 yr old dad grief because he still rides a motorcycle. I think even young people take a big chance on motorcycles. He tells me how dangerous horses are, to get me to shut up.

Yeh she is about 17/18. I dont know what happened. She can be a stinker once in a while. She is not respecting her bit ( a snaffle) so I am switching bits.

Glad to hear you're both ok!
The blanket looks good on him. I love the color! As long as the straps can be snugged up enough, I like slightly too big blankets because it's easy to layer under them if needed.

Yeah, next time if you have doubts you should just use Rashad with the buddy seat. I KNOW he won't react. :D He will protect his riders at all costs. I think he was knighted at some point and is following "the code". LOL. Or maybe that's just the gentleman in him.

Try Rashad's bit/bridle. It's got good whoa, but isn't too severe.

Farmerswife, i was thinking that when she went down the hill hte buddy seat may put your girl farther back on her butt than she is used too and it felt awkward or uncomfortable to her. Of course now I read that you thought about the hill too! So glad all is okay after the incident.
Very pretty new blanket!
