I hate this time of yr, when it comes to City.....NOTE, he Is OK...... The temps up and down and it just messes with him. Today I put him and Myst up in the round pen, let them have some time up out of their dry lot. They were fine, having a good ole time just grazing away. Came dinner time and I got the leads on, City is always first, he knows when it's dinner time, meets me at the gate. Myst wants to run, so I push her, City is standing there with halter and lead, waiting patiently. I round Myst, make her do a roll back a couple times, she gives, by now City is following her, just cause, not playing the game, just following what is going on. Myst turns in, gets her halter on, City stops in the corner to poo. Im standing there waiting with Myst, and like the good puppy City is, he finishes and comes right up for me to grab his lead(its been laying over his neck this hole time, hes good like that)Both horses are fine at this point.
I take them to their area, let City loose, he walks on down to his feed area while Im taking off Mysts halter. I walk to the run in with her, watch them for a min, notice something Im not to happy about. City is not eating his grain, City is a grain hog, he loves his grain. I look at Myst, she is happily eating, but not City. I hop under the hot wire, dump his grain from the small bucket to the large one, see if he just didnt like how I put in in his big bucket,(he can be anal that way)(wonder where he gets that from)but nope, thats not it, so I try hand feeding him, he takes it and spits it out, hmmm, what the heck. Well, its a brand new bag, but nope, he dont care, he loves his grain. So I stay with him, watch him for awhile, he starts eating his hay, so I go in, finish dinner, talk with Bob, tell him whats going on, and we eat. I go check on City, he has eaten 3/4 of his hay by now, and has eaten some of his grain. The grain should of been gone, along time ago. I am happy he has eaten his hay. OH, I've checked constantly for gut sounds, checked his neck for choke(he has a particular area where he has gotten things stuck, all was good) just check him over, he seems fine, just not interested in his grain all that much. So I go back in, tell Bob, Im doing a poo check at 10PM. We went out, three normal size piles, not dry nor wet, Citys regular poo. I go to his feed bucket, all his grain is gone, almost all his hay is gone(he's a slow eater)and his gut sounds were good, and he drank a whole lot of water.
I went through this last yr during the same season change and I HATE IT. I am glad he is ok, but dang it, I wish the temp change wasnt so hard on him. Other than his feed, he is ok during this. Its weird, but Im glad I know what it is, and what to look for.

Anyone else have issues with their horses during the weather change. I mean, 40 one day, 70 the next...gesh.

Poor City! I'm sorry he's going through this and that you're stressed (understandably)

My boys seem to take the weather changes in stride...well this is my first winter with Allegro so time will tell. The only issue he is having is sweating with the temps fluxuating. So as soon as I get a blanket for his large butt, I'm gonna trace clip him.

Arrow's gotten awfully frisky with the colder weather. And with hunting season on with guns for everything but deer (archery only for now), the deer are infiltrating out little patch of woods as a refuge and spooking the ponies.

Ya, City likes the cooler weather and is frisky, but when it jumps up 30+ degrees, it stresses him.
He would love the deer and hunters. Heck with their gun shots, can ya pet me as you pass...lol
Myst is fine with the changes. He just has an off day, I just stress and always think of colic.

One thing that stresses me is a horse with a winter coat who gets all sticky and sweaty when we ride in 60 degree heat!

Shadow and Gunner do that when the weather changes....Poor Gunner had his full weather coat already so yesterday we went ahead and clipped every where except his under belly and legs .. south Texas winter means that 70-80 days are the norm with night's that can drop into the 30's but average 40's He suffers during the day. we blanket on the cold night

I'm glad City is ok, your post scared me as I went thru. :( Our horses have been more hyper as of late.. I tied Raen up and she started pulling back like a mad woman and i couldn't stop her. NO idea why!

But i'm glad City is okay..

Oh yeah, this summer to fall weather is a pain and Al is prone to colic at this time of year. He just does not remember to drink enough water. We soak his Senior food and he has senior soup. Also a bran mash at least once a week. I can't tell you how many times I go up to the barn to do a sheet/blanket change. Starts out downright cold and then warms up so up to the barn I go to switch to something more temp appropriate.

Sorry, guess I should say that at the beginning, so no one else gets scared.

I've never noticed any changes in their eating patterns, but I do notice a change in attitude.....lol....when it gets chilly they get a bit looney at times.

My one horse Rocky top has off days like City when the weather does that. I also have to watch his water in take as well. Rocky top is a very sensitive guy which is funny being he is my biggest and toughest looking horse. Not to scare you but he is the horse that had ulcers last winter.

I'm glad he's ok! The weather doesn't affect my two eating (NOTHING affects them when they're eating!!!), but they do tend to run around playing a lot more. It's fun to see!

I'm glad City's okay!

The only thing that seems to affect Gypsy so far as weather changes is in the fall- she gets more energy, and the drier air seems better for her arthritis.

Glad City is okay. Our horses seem to be the same. But this is our first winter with them, so I'm on the lookout.
