OK, figured I would start an official thread for the training we are doing for the ACHTA CTC rides that myself and Gaited07 have entered.

Gaited07 has worked with her horse more on obsticles than I have, so I have a lot of work to do.

Here are some videos of my torture.... umm training with Dallas. :innocent:

Day one.... (I had this one posted before)

YouTube- Training for CTC.wmv

Day TWO... getting better. :D

YouTube- CTC training video 2.wmv

Day THREE... sorry no video. :( I didn't bring my tri-pod out. We worked from the ground today. I didn't saddle him up because I ran out of time. But we had a good day and worked on going over a narrow jump, which he is supposed to walk over and not jump over. This is one I think we need to work on, because I feel it might be in one of othe competitions.

Nice torture work girl:)

:hysterical: LOL, thanks. You should have seen him today. He was pretty good with everything, till he came up to that little white plastic bag on the ground, then he came unglued! He really had me scratching my head on that one, but that's my Dallas. :D

I enjoyed watching those....isn't it funny how they get so afraid of things they see every day? You gave me some good ideas to try. Keep the videos coming....the music is great too!

I might want to keep track of this thread. You're giving me ides of things I can do with Gypsy besides ride in the arena or up and down in the ditch. Won't hurt her to learn to deal with new things, even at her age!

Nice to see Dallas making such good progress!

I will be working him again this week. I always record my training with him, so I can see what he or I might be doing wrong.

Right now his poor mind is saying "WHAT is she going to do with me today????"

DAY 4 - Sorry no pics or video. :(

Trainer was out to ride Joe, so I decided to ride with him today. I had trainer J ride Joe out to the desert first without Dallas, since Dallas does have issues sometimes when he is left behind. Dallas did great, but was on alert the whole time looking for Joe. When we finally caught up we did some bushwacking, going into ditches, over bushes and even went after a coyote. We loped away from each other, then walked through puddles. So that part of the morning went fine.

After trainer J left, I decided to try Dallas on some new obsticles. I was able to back him up through the "L"... it wasn't real pretty but we did it.

One obsticle I am having trouble with is...... There is a square on the ground, the object is to get the horses front feet inside that square then have the horse move it's hindend in a circle around the outside of the square while his front feet stay in the square.

We did not do very good on that at all. :( Now I am sure I could have accomplished this on the ground, but I have to be able to do this from the saddle. Poor Dallas did not know what I wanted and I finally gave up, because I did not want to confuse him any more. So any suggestions on how to help him would be great! :)

CG, I have seen I think it is Clinton Anderson teach horse to yeild their hindquarters with the saddle on. From the ground take the stirrup and press into the side of the horse where your heel would touch to move his hindquarters. Then teach it like you do any other where you first ask for one step and build up from there. It should then translate to the saddle if you can touch the same spot.

day one (sorry been busy)

Chip went to the vet to get all his travel goodies in order including his rabies shot.
After we got back from the vets, I saddled him up to do some riding by the road, backing up more hills, side passing , um think I have that one too good, he is now anticipating and side stepping ten steps with one request:rolleyes: So back to the drawing board we went until I had him doing one - two steps per request.
I didn't have much time to work him after we came back from the vet but little is better than NONE!
Speaking of none, I won't be able to practice until next weekend. I have to work this weekend due to Super Bowl but that is a good thing;)
I will remember to bring the camera next time I'm out there to give some updates and pics of our new home.

Boy we sure are getting close:) I will be heading down there in two weeks:eek: (look out AZ here I come;))

Well at least your horse sidesteps. Mine only does it when I am dragging a log beside him.... :hysterical:

I hope the weather stays good like it is now. It's so nice outside during the day. Glad you got all the vet stuff done. We are eagerly awaiting your arrival. Kids are cleaning their rooms this week. And I will make sure Chip has nice accomodations when he arrives.

02-09-2010, 03:41 PM
I haven't been able to work with my horses yet since the 4th. But here is my plans for Wednesday:

Oil change in truck,
Get battery charges up in trailer,
Hopefully if it's not raining too hard, I should have some time to work Chip out on a few things. I don't know if I will get the movie camera out due to the rain but if I can rig something to keep the rain off it I'll figure it out and get some pics:)

Offgrid your too funny but we here in Vegas has enough water. It's nothing but ankle deep MUD!!! Oh well, we will have a beautiful green spring;)

Okay here is an update with me and Chip. Today after I got all my errands done I finally got out to the stable to do some over do work with my boy.

He's doing quite well considering hardly no riding and no practice time. He's still very sensitive on his one side but not as bad. I ask once and I get 3-4 steps LOL instead of 6-20 LOL.

I've included a video of our practice day to show some of the torment that I put my poor horse through;)
It was a cloudy over cast day with a few little rain drops. The sun came out for a little while and it was sooooooo nice to see sunshine once again in Vegas.

ETA: I now have Chips traveling papers (coggins/health cert.) Current on all shots and wormer, Truck ready to go:)

:hysterical: Your STUCK with me:p

I got the idea from Appylover when we was doing a group practice together at VHL's stable.

I will have this weekend to play around some more. Chip gets his new sneakers on Friday morning and then it's pretty much just wash him, load up and head out on the highway (LONG HIGHWAY:doh:but worth it;))

Thank you miata but you should have seen day one when I was working him by that highway with all the killer bike riders (yeah like in bicycle!!!) We don't see too many of them out in the desert so his attention was, "What the ????!"

And as for Runner, I think he has the speed and ability to get you to the boarder;) He's a gorgeous boy with a LOT of POWER!
Not to mention, he would save you a lot of fuel money that way:hysterical::hysterical::p (sorry, couldn't help myself)

You will have to come out to the new place and go out on the trails with me. There is some beautiful riding out there.

OK fine! I guess I will ride with you. :p Maybe Dallas will learn a few things from Chip.

Is Chip getting his sneakers THIS weekend? or next Friday? I can't wait till you get here. by the looks of our weather, things should be drying out nicely and hopefully we can use our arena for riding to warm up the boys.

The gal that is doing this ride keeps trying to get us to get up there early and do the breakfast thing.... LOL I told her I don't do mornings very well and I don't eat breakfast. PLUS... I have EVERY intention of making sure Dallas is warmed up and worked out before we get there. A tired horse and a good horse. :D

Chip is getting his sneakers tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. Next Friday I'll be at your door step around 1pm ish then it's "SHOW TIME"

And I agree with you about a tired horse is a good horse, at least in our case;). I definitely want to work some extra traveled energy OUT of Chip before we get there. (note to self, pack velcro:hysterical:)

OGG,

This isn't my usual torture course, this is more trail obstacles that we should encounter in the competition in AZ.
Metro competition is right around the corner and I will be having my "extreme" course up for that one hopefully after I get back from AZ. I really need to start practicing on these. I'm soooo far behind.

Good luck with your course and I hope you post another video of it for us too;) Happy building:)

We have tons of car tires at my place and lots of STUFF! Not to mention cows... LOL

umm Gaited.... just remember, I have a curfew on Friday night. ;) I want to be sure I can get up, have my coffee and get the meds working Saturday morning, so we can go out and ride the boys before we haul out.

You can stay up with the kids if you want, but my hiney will be passed out one way or another... :innocent:

yeah wait til I get Chip by all those other horses:eek: He's going to blow a gasket:doh:

Chip is a perfect one person horse, he is attached to me and really listens to me when we are out on the trail together. When he gets in a larger herd, he looses his little mind and I have to get his attention again. I don't get that chance to work him in crowds that much but after a while in the situation he comes back to earth.
This should be a very interesting competition LOL I'm just looking forward to being about friends and maybe learning a few things:)

so am I! I would either have to sleep in your trailer or the back of the truck. I have water tanks, cook stove and all the other stuff but I don't want to trust Chip tied to the trailer all night. It's not that he wouldn't finally settle down, it's the penned up energy that he would has to share with me in the morning:)

well I'm set to go. Everything is in order except cleaning the truck:eek: (really needs it, smells horsey, go figure:rolleyes:)

I haven't watched the whole thing yet... gotta go get ready for the kids gymkhana, but wanted to let you know.... You can NOT use the saddle horn to mount or dismount. Can't even touch it. But you can use the opposite side of the pommel. ;)

Thanks OGG:) The turning sideways is our way of turning on the forehand. There is a "box" (4- 2x4's) that Chip is to be standing "in" the box and moving his hunches around. For the most part he's pretty good at it but still gets a little excited and wants to race through it.

CG,

I would NEVER point and laugh, just laugh:hysterical: Believe me, there are going to be some pretty DUMB things that Chip will be doing (you'll see;) ) and it will be okay to laugh but no rolling on the ground laughing:nono: :nono: :nono: you can point, but only for a split second (don't want too many people seeing our ?????):innocent:
