...for winter! I was just wondering what stuff people use to stay warm. Personally I am getting a carhartt and I have like a million pairs of long underwear! :p I also getting mountain horse icerider paddock boots. I have one question though. Does anyone know of gloves for work that are warm, but not bulky? I usually wear all weather riding gloves w. down mittens, but its a pain to have to take of the mittens all of the time. Any suggestions?

I just bought Under Armour and hope that it helps keep me warm. I dress like an Eskimo and I'm still always cold. This yr I'll wear the Under Armour and my flannel lined jeans, 2 or 3 pairs of heavy socks and snow mobile boots. On top I will have the Under Armour, a t-shirt, sweatshirt, Carhart Vest and Carhart Artic Coat with hood. My friend tells me I look like if I fall off the horse I'll bounce because I have so many layers on. I can not find gloves to keep me warm. My hands go totally numb in the cold. I even use those hand warmer things and they don't help much. I have tried so many different kinds of gloves and nothing keeps my hands warm. I think we need to start thinking about a warmer climate but I hate the heat. I like it around 65 or so then I'm very happy.

Geesh oursarge! I didn't think anybody was as bad as me! I'm awful in the cold but then I hate humidity. I like it in Ohio because it doesn't often stay too cold for too long and vice versa with the heat. Have you tried the SSG winter gloves, they work wonders for me. My friend also uses a hand/foot warming thing called Hotties, she loves them and thinks they're magic :)

I wasn't like this 'til I got older. When I was younger I could stay out in below zero weather and only have a sweatshirt and jacket on and muck boots with my flannel lined jeans but now I just freeze. I wear so many layers I can barely move!!!! It's 32 degrees out now and I feel like I'm in a freezer even in the house! I will have to look into those gloves, thank you. I will try anything to keep my hands warm! I'll have to check out Hotties too, never heard of them. I am desperate for something to keep my hands warm. Someone suggested battery gloves but they are expensive and they look sort of uncomfortable.

I think one reason my hands get so cold is that I can't work with gloves on like halter etc. so I end up taking them off then my hands get cold and don't warm up again when I put the gloves back on.

I am going to check out the gloves maybe they will be something to help me. I never thought I'd get this way in the cold, I've always been one who wanted to move to a real cold climate I loved being out in the real cold weather. I don't anymore!

That's strange, especially since you used to love to be out in the cold! I can't imagine how I'll be once I get older. I'm already horrible with the cold weather!

I know exactly what you mean with taking the gloves off for just doing the pratical things with horses, I'm the same way. I always feel like I have too much bulk with gloves. I'm tellin' ya though, these SSG gloves are great! I barely ever feel like I have to take them off to do anything. I found a link for you at Big Dee's; http://www.bigdweb.com/detail.aspx?id=1323. They are pricy for gloves, I think I got them for $20 at the Equine Affair more than a year ago and they're still in great shape. I hope you find something that works for you, I know how hard it can be!

I've just gotten adept at haltering and other things with gloves on. I can't take my gloves off or my hands will freeze - I usually use ski gloves.

As for clothing - I wear a Carhart "weevil suit" ...thats what I call it anyway. I feel like that kid in A Christmas Story in it. Its like a zip up jump suit type thingy and it is really warm. Underneath I will ususally wear a t-shirt and a sweatshirt and 2 pairs of pants and a good pair or two of warm socks and boots. Then I will wear a hat and scarf plus a hood if my sweatshirt has one on the really cold days.

Thank you, I'm going to check out the site. I was on e-bay last night and found gloves that have D Batteries in them. I'm wondering how they'd work?? I'm going to check Walmart etc. I think someone was selling some from Cabellas. They look a little heavy though so I'd probably have them off as much as on.

My friend wears one of the carhart jumpsuit things. It looks good on her but I have a feeling if I wore it I wouldn't be able to move, I can barely move as it is. One day I couldn't get my leg over the horse she has to throw me on! We are a pathetic group in the winter! She put horses on Horsetopia last winter and I was riding one in a picture, my friend saw it and said I looked like a winter coat with a head! That's all you could see was this little head in all these big clothes! Thing is I'm dressed like that NOW, everyone asks me what I'm going to do when it gets really cold!!!! I don't know?!

I don't know what happens when a person gets older, my friend is the same, she was never bothered by the cold and now we're both dressed like Eskimos and we can't hold out longer than a few hrs. maybe the blood thins out or something???? Maybe that's why so many people move to FL when they get older. The in laws are in the air headed there as I write this.

Well since it doesn't get too cold in Cali, I don't have to bundle up quite as much BUT it does get muddy! I wear rubber muck boots, usually horsey jeans and a sweatshirt. If it's really cold or extra windy I'll put my waterproof Classic Coverup jacket on over. I don't wear gloves much, I find that I become pretty uncoordinated with my hands when I do, lol.

We have a whole other winter riding issue here in the south! It's cold when you're in the barn and walking around, but once you start ridding, if the suns out, you will burn up! So I have to dress in many layers!

Under Armor is you're best friend!!!! It keeps you very warm, and it allows for all your normal movements and feel! Coveralls/Carharts/etc are great for barn work and trail riding, but when you start trying to ride in them they just don't move right! The other thing is we show through the winter, so Under Armor and Silk long underwear are your friends, they fit under all you're show clothes!

Since I warm up so much while riding I usually ride in just pants, under armor long sleeve shirt, long or short sleeve t-shirt, and a vest! The vest is as great riding tool! Just make sure you can sit in the saddle with it, some tend to rise up and choke you! And then for when I get off, I usually have a pair of insulated bib's and a jacket, and a cooler for the horsie!

All of you who have to deal with snow, freezing temps, and no winter riding make me very happy I live where I live! I can put up with the hot summers and bugs so that I can ride year round!

Oursarge, I'm with you on the getting older thing, and I'm down here with Auequine! It's my hands and feet that get cold and then they hurt. I bought the silk long underwear last year, it feels good, but it didn't keep me very warm . Of course, maybe I bought the wrong kind.

I love wool socks, but does anyone know where to get the thin wool blend kind?

I must have poor circulation, or my saddle cuts it off, but my feet are always cold! And there is nothing worse than dismounting with cold feet, I feel like every bone in my leg just broke!

My cure... hunting socks! I discovered these when we went snow skiing! My mom (formerly from Alaska) brought me these socks, and I will swear by them! It's the silk sock liners with the wool socks! You can find them at walmart in the hunting section, just look for the pairs with the liners and the socks! I wear them all night at work, and my feet are still toasy warm when I get home!
I just can't stand the thick insulated boots, I feel like I'm wearing clown shoes! But these socks are my life savers!!!
