Bessie: All heelers (red or blue) are born white. Just like dalmations are born without spots. You're supposed to be able to tell by their feet if they're gonna be red or blue, but I'm not sure how yet. I guess I'll go look that up.

Puppy 2: born 1:30 am (I got to watch this one... gross). Female with dark patches on both ears.
Kinda hard to get a picture of her, big sister kept crawling all over her!

Oh man she is a champ! I'm not even having to get the other babies out of her way. She just stands up, circles half way around and pops the next one out! She's cleaning them up quick, and eating the afterbirth very quick (puke!). She's got her milk now! She's is so awsome!!!
Ok. Next poll... how many do you think she'll have? I'm guessing 4, student guesses 3!
I'm so happy I brought her up here for this. Number one my student is loving getting to do all this (she's a small animal person). And I feel so much better having her here telling me it's all ok. Because I have read and heard alot, but it's different to see. She assured me the umbilical stumps were perfect, and is really teaching me alot! Now I just gotta figure out how to get them all home in the morning!

You took her to the clinic?! Makes sense, people go to the hospital to have babies why not your dog? So is there someone there who can tell if she had them all?
You've been great through all of this. You'll sleep like a rock later.

Well they're in the clinic technically, but they're in the equine part where I work. My student is a small animal person, she's been great! She's checked them all over for deformities and such. All are good. When we think she's done we'll ultrasound her again and see if we can find another heart, spine, skull, or anything.

Puppy #3: Born 2:15am. Female
This one is the smart one! She was nursing before momma even finished cleaning her! And she screams the loudest!

Ok, we think we're done with 3 puppies. It has been 2 hours since the last puppy came out, and she's completely quiet. We ultrasounded her and found no other puppies. So the chances of her having another are small!
So that's 3 females, and only one with markings.
Poor DH he's out numbered 7 to 1 now. The cat, both dogs, all 3 puppies, and me... all female! Guess he needs to go spend some time at the barn with Fiddler and Cash to get some man time!
Well I'll be heading home around 6, hopefully to get them all settled back in the whelping room and then settle myself into bed! I will try to check back before I hit the sack, but make no promises!

I would have guessed six pup's and I said she would have them Tuesday and then going into the night but I didn't give an exact time like SWMS...Conratulations to SWMS!!!
At this point an X-Ray is better because you would be able to see the bones of the pup's and the ultrasound isn't as reliable at this stage...maybe she has one more in there and it's a boy lol that would be fun!!!

This is where she's a really awsome momma! She would pop the puppy out away from me, and before she would even turn around and let me see the puppy she had already cleaned and eaten everything. I was very appreciative.

Actually #1 is my favorite. I like the eye markings. Though number #3 is so smart! But of course I love #2 as well!

Only 1 is spoken for 100%. The others are technically still up for grabs, but there are a few people who get the option first. Kinda hope they don't take them, that way I can sell them for more. Not to make a profit, just to pay for little bit's spay surgery. Because despite how cute they are... I don't want to do this again!
As far as names, I will not be naming them. Don't want to get too attached. They will get colored collars and will be named by color. That what my aunt does with her goldens she breeds.
I've been up to check on them a few times, Little Bit finally went outside to potty (over 12 hours since her last potty). All the pups are looking good! I'm finally well rested, and am heading in to love on them and take pics. Be back later!

Yeah, she has really surprised me at how good a momma she is. She lets me check all the babies, but not take them too far. She is religious about cleaning/pottying them... I mean religious!!! Finally heard her get out and eat/drink something. She doesn't want to leave them.
Is it normal for her to still have some bloody discharge? I know it is in mares, figure it is for her too.

I was shocked at their size too. I was a bit worried she would need a c-section. The stud was alot bigger than her, but we weren't sure how much of his size was genetics. Since he was the runt and recieved lots of seroids at birth.
Yeah, can you put Witch Hazel on doggie hindies? Because I know that was VERY soothing for me after birthing.
ok... ummm.... little TMI... hahahaha! I'm sure she'll be fine! Just a pain to clean all the bedding so much!
Aww they are SOOOO cute. She looks like a real proud mama.
She is so stinking proud of herself! It's the cutest thing ever. She's pretty protective too. She will let me pick them up, but follows and watches me like a hawk. She won't let anyone else pick them up. My friend (stud's owner) came over with her kids today to see them. Bitsy went nuts! Growling like crazy! This is why the cat and the other dog are locked up. Not worried about what they'd do to the puppies, worried what Bitsy would do to them! But she is a great momma!

What beautiful new additions to your family. So, are you going to try to keep any of them? It would be hard not to. I am still mystified about the color. That is interesting to me. I am used to horses, say grays and appaloosas changing colors but no idea about dogs.
"No no kids here! Hubby and I are still on the fence about having them at all!"

I love the way momma looks so happy and proud she really does and it shows. ACD pup's are so darn cute but then again I'm biased lol. I still can't believe she only had three lol but what cuties they are.
I already mentioned how protective ACD's are with their pup's but now you can see it for yourself. Little Bit may snap at somebody she doesn't have a trusting bond with as a warning to stay away! My Courtney is one of the happiest ACD's I have ever been around but the only time she snapped at a human was when she had her pup's and they only stood at the gate so just be aware of that.
I'm so glad you took momma with you to work and I know you are too :)

i have to keep telling myself the same thing!!! We cannot have another dog! And there's no promise that these puppies will be as good as Little Bit, they may be little demon's like Abby!
It was a hard but fun morning. We ventured out into the blizzard with the puppies. They had their first trip to the vet clinic to have their tails done. They were definatly the hit of the clinic. All my students were oooing and ahhing over them. I couldn't figure out what was taking so long, then they came and told me that there was a line in the treatment room to see them. One of my favorite students was great! She guarded them and made sure only people with clean/sanitized hands got to pet them! Little Bit was good, until the pups started crying... then she went nuts! I love the look of the docked tail, but the process makes me cry. But the new owners want it done, so we did it. But everyone is all better now, and back home, happy as clams!

When I told my students that I was brining them in to get them done they were all shocked. They told me to just do it myself. I can't!!!! Flat out CANNOT do that myself! We didn't remove the dew claws though.
Everyone is doing good! Bitsy is lightening up a bit. She's really missing her human attention. So a few times a day, when the puppies are asleep she gets to come into the den and chew on a bone and get some alone time with me and DH. The puppies are really growing! They've got alot more coordination and strength! So far still white, but you can start to see some of their merl spots coming in. Looks like they're all gonna be blue, to me!

yeah I feel bad for all of my animals, non of them are really enjoying this puppy endeavor! Abby misses getting to play with Little Bit, she doesn't like being an only child. Little Bit doesn't like being locked away alone with the pups, she misses her humans and Abby. And poor Moon (the cat) is totaly peeved. She's locked away in the master bath/bedroom. I don't know what she'd do to the pups or what Bitsy would do to her... she's never gotten along with the dogs, and this is not the point I want to take chances.
1 week down... 7 more to go!

"Mine...These are mine...My puppies...Mine."
hahahahaha!!!! Too Cute!!!
She's so funny now. Like I said she misses human attention, so any time one of us walks back to her gate she jumps right out of the box and runs over to the gate. Even if the pups are attached to her, she jumps right up and they will literally detach in almost midair. But if I go in there to pick them up to change the bedding, she's all over me... "what are you doing? that's mine!! where are you going with that? I'm watching you!!! yeah that's right, you better put that down!!"

The puppies are all doing well! I do need to take some new pics... and now that they're active, some video! We have mixed emotions now, turns out we have 2 reds and a blue. So my friend is very torn. She wanted the runt, but the runt is red. The only blue is the butterball! So no one is specifically spoken for yet, but I've had some interest. I'm very under the weather right now, so I'll try to get some pics tomorrow or later this week depending on how I'm feeling!
I also now need advice on raising them best! Any advice on getting them on dog food and when? Best ways to get them started towards house/potty breaking? Best way to trim their nails? How often do you worm (I gave them .5cc of safeguard fenbendazole on day 15)? Anything else I should be doing?

I usually start giving puppies a very wet soupy puppy food at about 3 weeks old but I offer it sooner....when they will eat it is when I start feeding them. I trimmed puppy nails with human toe nail clippers...so much easier then dealing the bulky dog nail trimmers. I would use puppy pads or newspaper for potty training and as they get older move the pads closer and closer to the door and then eventually move it outside. As for worming I used what the vet had....it starts with a "P" can't remember the name of it though and wormed at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks....ect every 2 weeks until they go to their new homes and stress to the new owner to keep to this regiment....

Proof I do clean their bedding! Cute pic of the snuggly pups and mom after their bedding change! Man I've done more laundry for them in a week than I do for me in a month, but man it stinks after less than a day! Guess they're starting to pee on their own a bit. I'm now finding little yellow spots everywhere!
They're cute, but they're stinky!I love puppy smell!

Sounds like they are doing great. As far as puppy stuff, the lady that fostered our puppy before we got him gave him a bath every week or so and also trimmed his nails every 2 weeks. She said that way they got used to being handled and groomed. I have to agree - Remy is great with everything and LOVES baths. He even jumps into the shower with me while I am showering to just hang out at the end.

Week 3!!! They're really starting to develop! They are very playful with each other, lots of wrestling and chewing! #1, now known as patches (for obvious reasons) is coming out red... bummer! #2, now known as 'runt', is also coming out red... major bummer. And #3, now known as 'butterball' is our only blue! They are all so cute! I can't wait til they get older and more playful!
Now for week 3 pics!

I haven't been around much at all, and I'm just now seeing this. The puppies are adorable!! Congrats! :) I'm partial to the blues, but it could be because I have a Blue Heeler Cocker mix that is blue. lol :p
Congrats to you though and I'm so happy they are doing so well. Sorry for not responding sooner! I hate I missed this thread.
When we try to get puppies on the puppy food, we soak it for them and start offering it at about 2 1/2 - 3 wks. They normally don't start eating alot then but it gets them used to it. By about 4 1/2 - 5 wks. we start transitioning them to dry food gradually if they have big enough teeth to handle it. By 6 wks. most of the time they are on full dry food, but it can depend on their breed. Since we have had different breeds come in that we foster it's hard to say exactly.
With the paper training, etc., we do mostly what liva said. We put the papers outside the whelping box and let the pups start going there themselves. We don't train them to do it, they just learn to go outside their "bed" and do it, especially as they get older.
On trimming nails we use cat nail trimmers. They are small and aren't so bulky, but work amazingly well! I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have them myself. lol
With wormer we use Nemex/Pyrantel Pamoate(per the vet) and give it at 2,4,6,8,...etc, weeks, at a rate of 1 cc per 5 lbs (per the vet also).

Haha, momma was out playing in the yard with Abby! That's the only time I can get in there to see them without her in my way. She's not protective of them with me, it's more she wants all of my attention! Poor thing she really misses her freedom and human interaction! She is definatly still agressive with strangers though. She bit two of my friends this past weekend. Not really, but one friend showed up early and we didn't hear him (and the dogs didn't bark) until he was in the door, and we hadn't put Bitsy back up yet. She went nuts, and snipped at his pants leg. Same thing happened the next night with another guy. Luckly everyone was wearing boots and jeans! And they all understand why she's that way right now!
Currently I still have the puppies confined to the box. I had to turn it around so they couldn't get out the door. They had figured out how to follow mom out of the box, but still arn't quite coordinated enough to get back in. I have a blanket on one side of the box and a pee pad or two on the other side. I've noticed Butterball always goes to the pee pad, but Patches will pee on the fresh blanket everytime! So oh well!
As far as puppy feeding... would canned puppy food be better than soaked dry food? Should I just put it in their box for them, or do I sit down with them and try to get them to eat some of it? Like I said I still have them confined to the box, so I don't want to leave food and water in the box for them to make a mess of, or for Little Bit to just end up eating (which I guess wouldn't be bad).

Yeah I had pulled all the heating pads out of the box, but then they started acting cold. They hadn't laid on the heating pad side in almost a week, so that's why I pulled it. But I guess it was still warming the whole box. So I stuck the smaller pad in the corner to get some heat in the box! Don't worry though! I'm keeping a close eye on anyone for any signs of chewing!
If this stupid weather would quit being so rediculously cold I wouldn't need it at all! I can't believe it's March and I still have the heat on full blast!

You can feed canned food, we feed soaked food though because it doesn't mess up their stomachs as bad. The canned food seemed to mess up their stomachs more. If anything we'd give a little bit but that's it.
To get them used to it we sit them down around the pan, normally they'll nose it around themselves, if not we'll gently put their nose to it so they know where it is. Whatever they knock around, get on them or knock it out of the pan, momma dog should clean it up. You can leave it in there for them for about 10 minutes and then take it out, unless you wanted Momma to clean it up and I'm sure she wouldn't mind that either. lol :p
with the water ours start drinking at about 4-5 wks. depends again, but most of the time it's around then. When they start drinking water we leave it in a bucket(that's attached to the side of their cage with a clip) on their papers, and put it in the corner. They then walk back and forth as they want water. But it keeps them from soaking their bedding area in the whelping box if they drip any anywhere or anything like that.

Well, didn't get by the vet school in time to get the canned food (and I sure ain't paying regular cost). So I took a friends recomendation and mixed some of momma's food with milk. It took forever to get soft enough (like 2 hours). Then I took it to them and just set it in the box (it's on a saucer)... Butterball walked right up to it and ate like she'd been eating out of a bowl everyday. Then patches found it and finally Runt at a little at the end. I let Little Bit lick the last few bites off the plate.
Now more questions... How often should I offer them food like this? Any ways to get it to soften faster? Is it better to mix with milk or water?
They seem to be using the puppy pads more, but still lots of accidents. Usually they'll walk over to the pad to pee, and then pee with only their front feet on the pad. What stinkers!!!
I think in a few more days they'll be big enough to get in and out of the box so I can turn the box back around and let them have some more freedom! Right now they still can't quite get back into the box when they get out of it.

I offer the soaked food to them once a day until they are about 4 wks. Then I feed them twice daily from there on, even after they are on dry food.
I use water to soften it, but to soften fastest I use hot water. As hot as you can get it. It'll take just a bit to soften and by then the hot water will be cooled enough it'll be a warm soft puppy food mash. They should love it! hehe
You can use the puppy pads or the newspapers. I've always used newspapers because if they shred them it's not as messy as when they shred the cotton type stuff out of the puppy pads. lol :p Now that'll make a mess!
You said they can't get back in the box right now, but with a name like Butterball for one of them that might explain it for that puppy atleast. lol :p

Your puppies are adoreable. I love that their color is coming shining through. I had one thing to add about puppy food. Not sure if it is right or not, but it is what we used to do eons ago.
We just bought regular "pablem (sp?)" baby cereal in the box and mixed it with warmed goats milk from the can and let them start eating that way. Same as you would a newborn baby. When I was young we raised poodles, and started them all that way. It worked. I'm sure they have better ways now, but it didn't harm them at all. Other than the bath they needed when done. Anyway, keep the photos coming they are cute. How many are you keeping again?

Good News!!! All puppies are sold!!! What a huge relief for me! I wasn't really worried, but our two other prospective buyers just came by to see them again, and I was worried they might not want red. But one of them actually was wanting a red from the beginning, and the other said they would take whatever my friend doesn't. So all puppies have homes!
Hubby keeps talking about wanting to do it again! The thought has crossed my mind, but I'm still against it. I don't want to be one of those 'breeders' people like us bash!
I'll try to take more pics this week! Patches is getting so cute! All their little white marks on their heads are coming through now!
I'm currently feeding them 3-4 times a day. They only eat about a spoon full at a time... if that. Random question... is the mom eating the feces? I get alot of urine, but have yet to find any poop, except once when I watched Butterball poop. And it was very sad, that I got so excited to watch her poop! So I was just curious!

Congrats on having them all placed! That's great! :) We still have 6 of the "Chipmunk" foster puppies left, but we've found 4 good homes and hope to find the others homes soon.
Mom is probably still eating the poop. Most often they will eat it even up until the puppies are 5 or 6 wks., longer if they want. Some don't eat it that long, some do, it depends.

not really. She has until the puppies are ready to go! The other people don't care which two they get! So far they're doing great! Already eating wet food very well. I've actually been leaving momma out for long periods of time. So they should be good to go at 6 weeks.

I won't say I'm dead set against another litter. But I'm just not sure if I want to do this all again. So I may put off spaying her for a little while, since we really don't have the money right now due to all the truck issues. So I may just tell hubby that we'll see how we feel in a year or so. She does make really nice babies, but it just throws my world into a tail spin for like 8-10 weeks. I got lucky this time that I didn't have to go out of town for anything durring all of this. Not sure when I'll get another 10 week window like this... definatly not during the summer ever!
Though I think I just gave myself a major insight into myself. If I'm not willing to put my life on hold for a few weeks for puppies... I definatly don't need any kids anytime soon. But that's a whole other issue!
