well, my mom was getting her hair done yesterday and she was talking with her hair dresser. they got on the conversation of horses and found out that her hair dresser is big into showing horses.
to get to the point... this lady has a 2 yo gelding, by The Only Escape and out of a mare by Artful Move, that she wants to sell. Her only problem is that when the horse was younger it had some swelling on his hock. It wasn't lame but the vet did surgery to reduce the swelling. The horse is currently sound but she cannot guarantee he will be sound for certain events .... she said she was pretty much willing to give me this horse.
what do you guys think? take it or leave it?

I'd go see if you like the horse first. :)
And I'd think real hard about what you'd like the horse to be able to do, what level of performance you'd be happy with, and whether you're willing to commit to do right by the horse, regardless. Seek a vet's opinion about what his veterinary expectation would be, on those three questions. This is not one that I think you should take on unless you're willing to keep it no matter what. Really, she's dumping a problem on someone that should be her own, IMHO. You have to be able to decide if you're willing to accept the risk, for the horse's sake.

Why do you want this horse? Is it only because he is free? If so I wouldn't do it.....Rowdy is fixing to keep you really busy.....

I too wonder what kind of surgery reduces swelling. Most surgery will cause swelling to some extent. I would find out exactly what the procedure was and why it was done.
There have been really good points already pointed out so I'll just add my 2 cents.
I got a free horse two years ago. He wasn't quite a 2 y/o. Due to my own time constraints (I actually have to work for a living) I sent him to a trainer $1200.00 and then add in all the other normal horse expenses and in the words of Kevin, "there ain't no free horse!"
Notice I dropped the "honey." ahahahaha I may not be too bright but I ain't steppin in that hole.

Oh, I wanna know why natishas got her neck hairs up over that???
I also wanna know what the heck is up with the "honey" word.
Stepping in a hole? What is up?

LOL @ Vick
Des I have gotten my share of "Free" horses if you're already busy, they just ad to it . With what you already have on your plate and not knowing without a serious vet check what is up with him I think I would pass, but that is just my op.

Evidently some folks don't like being called Honey. I have witnessed it as recently as a week ago at Home Depot. The lady who got called Honey did a great job of not killing the other woman who was calling her honey.
The callee was a friend of mines wife. She wasn't real happy with her husband and I when we were laughing about it outside. So, that is the hole I wasn't going to step in. I've been there.

ya, thats a good question. You were concerned about vet bills.

I think she was selling Dez because she wanted a horse that would be better suited for what she is looking to do and Dez doesn't offer that - not because of vet bills? Maybe I am wrong, but I thought that is why.

I still havn't gotten ahold of the lady personally. I was going to ask her and get straight answers. My plans for him would be a speed event horse. I have a vet that I trust and will give me an honest opinion.

I always have to check into a free horse. I am not 100% into getting him, just thought I would check out what everyone had to say about the bloodlines, or if anyone might know what that surgery was while i was awaiting the phone call back from the owner.
Des, honey there aint no such thing as a free horse............Kevin
haha... very true

I was more considering Dez because I wan't to get more serious into events. As much as I would like, she wont take me in that direction. My dream for her is to have my kids rid her, but I am 22 and not expecting them anytime soon.
I thought you were selling one of your horses because you didn't have time for both? Why are you thinking about getting another one??
same as above... i have time... plenty of time

thank you for stating that. that is totally true. vet bills have never been a problem. i have a friend that is a vet who knows i am going to school for vet tech, she helps me out and gives me deals.
She was concerned about vet bills in one thread.

I only posted this because I was waiting for the lady to call me back. I thought I would check and see what you guys have to say since you are so knowledgeable. I wasn't 100% into getting this horse. Just thought I would check into what I would get myself into.

Not trying to start trouble. This came off your thread. Just saying. It was said. I wasnt making it up.
I know I cannot afford 3 horses... well i could but if something happens I don't want to be in trouble vet wise. If you didn't see my other tread on the rescue.

What WB said. If the horse has issues in the future are you just going to dump it or take care of it to the end? Blood lines don't mean a thing if the horse doesn't do what you want or need it to do. Just to say it again there is no such thing as a free horse.
I didn't know about Natisha and Kevin. That's nice!

i know i don't want to cause trouble. just trying to explain myself.
i could afford the general care for 3 horses. I have no horse board.... in the summer i virtually have no food bill because there is 60 acres to graze. What I ment is I am just worried if something happens as in the lines of colic surgery I couldn't afford that. I have a care credit card for $1000 which is set aside for emergencies.

I wouldn't just dump a horse. If the horse turned up un-sound for riding, he would have a lovely retirement home with me or the place that I currently have my horses. They have 7 horses (not including my own) 3 of the horses are 30+, the other 4 are between 15-30.. some still rideable. The man loves his horses are they are there till the end.

If you want to do speed events and this horse has had swollen joints with no known cause before that required surgery I would pass....this horse won't do you any better then Dez can....plus there is a higher risk that this horse is going to cost you vet bills you can't afford. Take the money that you would save not getting the horse and put it into Dez or Rowdy.....JMHO

OK - I would pass. Speed horses are not easy to keep sound when everything about them is perfect. That and that you don't have an unlimited budget for veterinary diagnostics and treatment, makes it sound like less than a good deal for you.

His daddy is a handsome fella http://www.theonlyescape.com/toephotos.html
I say if you have the resources and time, it doesn't ever hurt to take a look. However, I don't know that he is going to be suitable for what you are wanting .. it may even turn out that his injury isn't going to effect him..who knows

I can say that babies are HARD WORK. I think its worth investigating but dont get your hopes up. My filly is in her terrible twos and I want to kill her some days! She is naturally a kind and patient filly... but when it comes to work time...

I agree with what Vicki is trying to tell you. I don't think it's wise to consider this horse or any other until you get rid of some.
